LA Angels Wednesday News Crash: Still nothing

Good morning Angels fans. Have some links or whatever.

Angels News

There is no Angels News. There was never going to be any Angels news. So have some old footage of that one time that David Hulse tried to kill the Angels’ dugout. ‘Member that?

Around Baseball

MLB players are getting bigger. To be fair, so are people in general.

Fatso

Reds sign RP Frankie Montas for a 1/14M deal. Also an option for 2025.

It is the last thing the Reds will do. Most likely.

Cubs sign pitcher Colten Brewer. Finally signing someone.

This means that every team has finally done something this offseason. Update the list.

Speaking of list, here is the list of money each team has spent so far. Yeah, Angels mediocre even here.

Yankees still won’t have a City connect uniform. Most suck, TBH.

Latest update to the MLB HOF process. We should have the real results soon tm.

Too early to call anyone but Beltre.

Anything I missed? Post below for upvotes.

Padres are probably next going to go to cold cuts for player spreads ala 1980s Chicago Cubs. Yeah, that’s right, such a culinarily rich city went to cold cuts for the Cubs.

Most boring offseason in MLB that I can recall.

Plesac needs better coaching than what we have to offer, but mostly he may be up to now uncoachable. Some players feel that they know better than the coaches and if they don’t catch what is being thrown at them, they go back to what they believe should work. I do not think he is a waste at 27 yrs old, but after all his failures why a 2-year deal and a 40-man roster spot? He was a 7th round pick I read somewhere; he does have a Arturo’s fortune behind him though. I hope it works out Ok for him.

Thought this was minor league contract at first, had to go back and re-read. I think it’s still pending a physical before details are released but I’ll guess 1 year $5 million with what’s been given out so far, his last Indians contract was 1 year just under $3 million.

From site favorite, has Angels linked to Bellinger and Snell.

https://www.espn.com/mlb/insider/story/_/id/39229320/mlb-2023-24-free-agency-update-predictions-trades-moves-jeff-passan-snell-bellinger

Personally, don’t want them as I am rooting for a stagnant year… tired of different lipstick colors on this pig. For the players sake, sign outside CA and keep more money, unless the workers compensation system is attractive (I know Arte likes insurance paying out salaries once his new shiny object gets an influx of season ticket holders, who remain on the hook for a team and organization that is a laughing-stalk of MLB). I wish Arte would do something dumb like panthers owner Dave Tepper so more heat would be put on him.
Oh wait, he’s a minority and lowered a beer price 20 years ago (12 oz Budweiser in one 500 concession). But then again, he would actually have to show up to a game (last time I saw him was 2022 20th WS reunion when Tim Salmon thanked him for hosting). GFY Arte 💩

Further context…

“The Los Angeles Angels have been rooting around on the periphery of the high-end market since seeing Ohtani leave for the Dodgers. Even with the $76 million they owe Mike Trout and Anthony Rendon, the Angels currently project a midlevel payroll — well below the top-10 Opening Day ranking they’ve carried for 20 consecutive years. Considering the bereft standing of their farm system, the Angels can’t rely on trades or internal promotions to keep them from avoiding fourth place in the American League West. Snell fits. So would Bellinger.”

I’m against shelling out the big FA contract(s) as much as the next person, but if a rebuild isn’t happening we can’t do much better than Snell and Belli to replace Sho.

It seems like Montgomery is the FA SP with the least stable landing spot. Rangers can’t, Yankees haven’t, Mets and Phillies won’t – Maybe he should be our target?

(From Passan)

The Texas Rangers want to re-sign Montgomery but don’t know how Diamond Sports’ bankruptcy will affect their TV deal. The Yankees would also love a reunion with Montgomery. The New York Mets and Philadelphia Phillies both offered $300 million-plus on Yamamoto, and while neither planned to pivot to Snell or Montgomery, both are nimble enough to seize on opportunities that markets provide.

I missed this nugget a couple months ago about Adell training with Matt Holliday.

“Adell has been working out this offseason with longtime major league outfielder Matt Holliday, a six-time All-Star who works for Scott Boras, Adell’s agent.
Adell, 24, hit .207 with a 706 OPS in 17 games last season. He would have gotten an opportunity to play more, but he suffered an oblique injury just after he was recalled to the majors to replace Mike Trout in July.
Defense was considered Adell’s biggest issue a few years ago. He’s improved in the field, but he still has work to do offensively.
“I don’t know if I’ve ever witnessed in my career, somebody improve defensively as much as he has over the last three years,” Minasian said. “I think there’s some strides to be made offensively that he knows, that he’s working on as we speak.”

Matt’s son Jackson sure seems to have the potential to be something, so good on Jo for seeking out help that might translate to a good MLB a career. After 2022 (the only opening day roster he’s made, right) I stopped paying attention, but I only follow the big league team… it’s always been closer for me to attend and our woeful farm system/facilities have never made me want to jump out and take the family to check it out. Hopefully one day! Shout out to everyone that pays attention to the 40 man roster or minors so I don’t have to!

Either way, you gotta’ figure it’s his sink or finally swim year in OC.

Only one question matters. Can he plug the gaping hole in his bat and reduce the K rate from 40% to somewhere in high 20’s?

This will make all the difference in him batting .200 or .250. He has prodigious power potential and a plus athlete.

This is why I don’t think we need someone like Bellinger, and would rather have a more versatile (IF also) DH option.

Use the bulk of our resources on pitching, and trust that Trout, Ward, Moniak, Adell. We still have Jordyn Adams and Alfonso Rivas, and have signed both Willie Calhoun and Marisnick already.

Cowboy26

So you’re ok with having no second round draft pick ( Bellinger) and 3rd round draft pick (Snell) despite the horrible state of our farm system?

Or is it either Snell OR Bellinger? and hopefully the Comp Round pick makes up for the lost second rounder?

I said we don’t need Bellinger. And though I am fine getting Snell, I just said we should focus on pitching.

Did you mean to reply to my comment?

Cowboy26

No I understand your position. I tend to agree with you on Bellinger . However, we need a middle of the line up bat and with Rendone and GORDO GOAT I think we are better off with a rotating DH to rest the weary. Bellinger , although his outfield defense is overrated, would allow us that luxury at the DH position but would be way more expensive for my blood when pitching should be the main focus.

I am curious about your thoughts on giving up another draft pick as we have the last 3 out 4 drafts. Do we need pitching worse than we need higher draft picks ?( or at least the slot money that accompanies it?.)

matthiasstephan

Reply to  Cowboy26

If we can avoid losing draft picks, that is always good. So, if we can sign Montgomery instead of Snell, I would prefer that.

That said, Snell (imho) is worth the potential draft pick, if he is who we can land.

After a top SP, I think we need help in the pen – and there I would hope we could get help without losing a draft pick.

As for the DH position, I would rather sign Turner or bring back Urshela if we are going to get anyone else. That way we could rotate both Trout (Adell) and Rendon (Rengifo/Turner/Urshela) through the DH spot as needed.

I don’t understand why Beltre avoid the steroid label. The Dodgers wouldn’t re-sign him for a decent contract after his big likely steroid-aided breakout year and he went to Seattle. Beltre was lost in the Pacific NW there until he went to other steroid cities and suddenly had his power back. He then played forever.

Connect the dots. Sudden power surge during PED era. Check. Varying power and results depending on weather in PED-infused cities. Check. Played unusually long without markedly declining performance. Check (see Clemens, Roger for this factor).

He’d seem to be as much as a steroid-infused guy as Manny or the like.
