LA Angels Wednesday News Crash: Last Man Standing

Morning Angels fans. Have some links.

Angels News

The Angels won for some reason yesterday. Not even just win either but blowing out the Rangers. It is bad for the tank but it also means that the Rangers will not clinch in Anaheim since even if they win and the Mariners lose tomorrow, the Rangers would still need one more win to secure even a playoff spot.

Speaking of clinch, with the Rockies 100th loss, the Angels have clinched the best team in Baseball history!* (As being the only team without 100 losses in a season, thus they are the best because I say so). Yep, the Angels never lost 100 games ever, not as a brand new team, not when getting the number 1 overall pick, never.

Detmers has finished the season strong and has a 2.41 ERA in his final 7 starts of the year. Hopefully he carries it to next season.

Around Baseball

Brooks Robinson has died. It is a sad day for Baseball.

Adam Wainwright officially retires. Ends with 200 wins exactly. HOF or Hall of Very Good?

Zack Greinke also maybe retires? Hard to tell with that guy.

Mariners fan threw a ball and hit Mariners pitcher George Kirby. They are in Seattle.

A reminder that the A’s are moving and Manfred has put the Brewers Owner in charge of the final committee to finalize it. Also the Brewers want more money from Milwaukee or they will leave too.

Phillies are the first NL WC as they clinch the playoffs. They will face… someone in the NL at home.

Whoever it will be, it won’t be the Giants as they are eliminated. Padres lasted longer due to tiebreakers but should be eliminated today.

Oh and the Brewers have clinched the NL Central. Drink up.

ANything I missed? Post below for upvotes.

FB Memories reminded me we took our oldest kiddo to her first Angels game ten years ago today.

Edit: Her first *regular* season game, I was told my wife took her to a ST game while I was deployed lol

The Foundation Building Materials’ keystone of the game is “Roll the Dice” by Charles Bukowski.

https://youtu.be/XNo8EFRwvus?si=e8xMOQJbkGWDatyd

Reid Detmers wants to go all the way.
O’Hoppe wants to go all the way.
So too Neto, and Fletcher, and Drury on this September day

Even old Grichuk wants to go all the way.

If the tank is what the Angels intend to play

Nevin will have to destroy the player he once was.
He will have to sabotage even though his gut says no

because Joyce and Soriano,
Joyce and Soriano intend to go all the way.

Dunning vs Canning. Tonight’s game is a toss-up with a slight lean to Texass. Canning was roughed up earlier this season against Texas, let’s hope history repeats.

Tough news for Team Tank, Loup is out for the year.

He was easily worth half the ground we need to pass the Cards/

Which means the Schanuel Rookie watch is still at 102. Given that after tonight, we have 3 games, that means his rookie status is preserved for next year. (I don’t think ANYONE has ever had 10AB in one game).

I do believe this is going to be the Braves year to get the WS title again. Good for them. In the American League it would be fun to see the Orioles or Twins or Rays play in the WS.

If the Orioles make it to the WS and then the owner jettison’s most of the players as he said he might have to, the franchise should be removed from his ownership.

Who is the best OF in this photo?*

Those radio towers in the background atop South Mountain are where I routinely hike to and had done the same hike two days prior- just didn’t take enough water.

*trick question in photo – who is the guy just behind GA’s shoulder?

Having the Orioles and Blue Jays in the ALCS would also make the EaStPiN guys go a bit nuts.

I would also love to see the Astros join the Red Sox and Yankees on the outside looking in.

I’ve been following the franchise who plays just over 10 miles north of me this month much more intently – go Snakes!

They won again today and looking like they will make it!!

As a full member of Team Tank, a sweep today by Epps will be especially sweet- Double Double please. Carroll is incredible.

There’s a good shot Wainwright gets into the HOF. Long career, with one marquee franchise, 200 wins, plenty of October hardware.

Jack Morris is in the HOF with 43.5 bWAR and a career ERA+ of 105. Wainwright has 44.9 and 114 in those buckets.

Bert Blyleven’s career ERA+ is 118 but he amassed more WAR than the two combined.

Of the three I only really consider Bert to be HOF material, but I won’t hate on the other two for being or making it in.

Yo. Went out for a 9 mile hike🥾 July 10th and four hospitals and 5+ surgeries later, I’m back home as of Monday.

Ran out of water at the 8.5 mile mark and conked out, was found just in time with a core body temperature of 40 C. 🥵 I’ve spent decades in the desert 🏜️and this was a routine hike and this was a tourist move – such a rookie mistake. My entire back and butt are one big gnarled scar and other nice ones on both arms and and right calf, and my right elbow is a mess- I might need TJ surgery one day lol. 😨

So fall will be rehab rehab rehabilitation as I start walking again and get more functional with my right arm.💪🏼

So back to the Angels- did I miss anything? 😂

Life long friend lives in Palm Springs, got into a “discussion” with his wife on summer day many, many moons ago. Decided to take a hike to the top of San Jacinto to get away for the day and catch the tram back down, done it many times. Left way too late, didn’t bring enough water, etc. got way off the trail.
He went missing, wife called the police. Search team looked for him for 2 days, no luck. He thought he was going to die. Finally was able to light a fire to draw attention to his location, (the fire almost got him). They saw the fire and found him. Flew him down all the way down from near the top, hanging on a wire, from the helicopter. It was on the news, photos of him in the newspaper, (he was wearing a blue Superman T-shirt (mocked heavily for this).

That wasn’t the end. The fire he started needed to be put out, that cost money. Needless to say he got a a very large bill, and much debate about the asshole who attempted to burn the mountain down in the newspaper…don’t remember the details but he didn’t up needing to pay the bill. Very lucky to be alive.

Hope for a quick, but more importantly, complete recovery. (Second the request for more pictures, of either injuries, or when you are up for it, documenting the devastation that is the Angels tankathon).

Safe? Any city that has an app to report where people have crapped on the street fails my definition of “safe”…

The app “Snapcrap” is a mobile app that allows residents of San Francisco to request street and sidewalk cleaning from the city’s Public Works department by submitting a photo of something gross (usually crap) and sharing its location. Users can then track their tickets through the app to see if they have been resolved.

Reid Detmers threw 140 (5.4% usage) change-ups this season.

In his 4 September starts, he threw 84 change-ups (20.9% usage).

More change-ups = dominance.

A true 4-pitch mix, with 3 plus off-speed pitches.

Reid Detmers in September
(aka, when he unleashed his change-up)

4 starts
24.2 IP
1.82 ERA
1.14 WHIP
26 Ks = 25.7% K%
7 BBs = 6.9% BB%

Detmers is only 24 years old.

I despise the term “meaningless games”, another good one is “empty-calory stats”, from a fan perspective.

Perhaps, those games didnt have an
impact towards the making/missing playoffs, but there is nothing meaningless about it when I look to evaluate a player.

I can post Detmers’ dominant June #s and they would matter right because those games were “still meaningful” ?

Oh btw, these “meaningless games” came against Baltimore, @ Seattle, @ Tampa Ray, and Texas.

4 of the best teams in baseball battling for playoff positioning. Super, super meaningless. September stats totally don’t matter.

or it could be the difference between pitching in games that matter for making the playoffs verses pitching when there’s zero pressure to win.

This team is franchise of “low leverage” players.
