Angels Blow out Rays Somehow

Tank Commander Phil was confident. And he should be, the Angels were just 6 percentage points away from a top 5 draft pick slot and with the lottery the way as it is, had an outside chance at number 1 overall. Things were going great with a rough schedule against the Rays and Rangers, both looking for a division crown. With a depleted team full of AA players, this was a perfect opportunity that he could not fail!

HE DID WHAT?!

Yeah apparently, Drury did not get the memo and neither did Logan or Neto or Detmers even as the Angels scored a ton and won somehow. Good grief…

Detmers went 4 innings, giving up 1 run on 3 hits, striking out 7 and walking just 2. Phil pulled him early as a desperate ploy to tank, alas, it was not enough.

Highlighted Recap

Walsh started the scoring with a single in the first.

1-0 Angels

Logan got another run across due to a botched double play opportunity.

2-0 Angels

Neto doubled in a run i the 2nd, seriously forgetting he was supposed to tank.

3-0 Angels

Drury then messed up on purpose, hitting a 3 run jimmy jack.

6-0 Angels

Detmers, in a panic, allowed a run in the 3rd.

6-1 Angels

But while others were trying, Drury refused to tank, hitting a 2 run bomb in the 6th.

8-1 Angels

Wantz did allow a 2 run double, however.

8-3 Angels

Angels win 8-3, somehow. Yeah I have no idea how this was allowed to happen.

Upcoming

Another day game tomorrow. 10 AM. Because the networks hate you, that’s why. Yes, you in particular. See you tomorrow.

Nice anti-tank recovery, Angels burned a win as the Mets, Tigers and Pirates won as well. Cool.

Tigers move on to Oakland for a 4-game series, beautiful. While the Mets to move on to aa 4- game series against the hot Phillies. Mets playing better. Hoping for a split there

Pirates on the road to play the Reds and then at Phillies. To me, Pirates are a threat to the 6th slot and Cleveland is not looking good right now. Angels better play it safe and just lose.

a devastating win today has put us in jeopardy of dropping from 6th to 11th. 4 1/2 games separate 6 teams. A hot streak now would be disastrous for any of them.

St Louis 67-85
Angels 69-83
Tigers 70-81
Pittsburgh 71-81
Mets 71-81
Cleveland 72-81

Schanuel, day-by-day-by-day, is flashing old school 2-hole hitter skills. Not sure who’ll bat leadoff in 24’, but he’s ideal in the 2-hole with his OBP + contact ability.

3B – Rengifo
1B – Schanuel
OF – Trout
C – O’Hoppe
2B – Drury
OF – Ward
OF – Moniak
DH – TBD
SS – Neto

We have the makings of a young & solid lineup locked down.

Does Trout see increased time at DH as I would prefer?

Can Adell force his way into a starting role?

Can we get ONE year of health from Rendon?

Is Urshela on the club in 24’?

We’d be wise to sign a veteran OF/DH type, but other than that, the GM can & should focus entirely on pitching.

Good call on Schanuel as a no . because Neto is not neato in the 2 hole. too many K’s and not enough advancement of the runners on base . Ersty would NOT be happy with the k’s in that spot.

I kind of like Gifo in the leadoff but hes horrible base runner so thats a concern.

BTW you forgot Rendon

I don’t love Rengifo at leadoff, but slotted him there based on the current options. In a perfect world,
Rengifo would be our IF-OF super utility guy and other players would emerge.

I did mention Rendon,
along with Adell as one of our burning questions.

“Rengifo would be our IF-OF super utility guy and other players would emerge”

Rengifo has already emerged and is most likely better than whoever those players we hope emerge become. Rengifo has earned a starting role going forward.

I like the coverage he provides at multiple positions.

In my scenario and due to the inevitability of injuries, Rengifo will essentially get the AB’s of a starter anyway.

Think 6th man on a basketball team.

Depending on Drury’s interest, I would LOVE to extend him.

Schanuel’s slash line !!!!!
.289 / .423 / .768

Detmers upping the use of his change-up was the most obvious adjustment needed for any player all year. Future ace, Reid Detmers.

Neto and O’Hoppe balled out again. Adell less so, but I thought his ABs were pretty solid despite the Ks.

Can’t wait for a new pitching coach to guide some improvement. 4 inning starts are suboptimal.

At this point, they’re likely being careful with pitch counts vis-a-vis injury considerations.

Detmers has improved of late and this season was over a month ago. No reason to push too hard on the accelerator and have a blowout at this late stage.

I like him too. The only real knock is his OBP (approximately .300) but he’s a true “run producer” for sure.
He can also back up 1B quite well.

What really pisses me off is Adell is out there busting his ass with the “Golden Sombrero” doing his part. And Drury is showing up with a full effort being all professional and showing off. These guys should be playing just to get their daily cardio in, not like these games are meaningful. Shit, even Detmers pitched decent, even though he couldn’t complete more than 4 innings without throwing 100 pitches. Are you with us? Or against us? Throwing that many pitches you’d think he could sever up one of his classic 2 out meatballs, or 3.
This team will never lose the right way. We can’t TANK like the good teams.
Shit, before you know it Shuffle Bot will start showing up. If I see that miserable POS again this season I’m done. I just become a bandwagon fan and start following the A’ss.

So long as the Angels lose every series here on out, 6th spot looming good.

You realize that all that being in 6th place at the end of the season also means we have a 47% chance that we’ll receive the 7th thru10th pick in next years draft , right?
