Angels Get Swept Out To Coronado Bay With Third Straight Loss to the Padres, 5-3

Mercifully, the Angels final game of the series in San Diego was upon us. First, the injury bug continued to strike our stars, then the presumed powerhouse offense that has been asleep most of the year picked their friends up the 5 to wake them up, because of course. Patrick Sandoval went up against Seth Lugo of the Friars.

Sandy blinked first in the opening frame. After a single was sandwiched between two walks, Sandoval attempted a pickoff throw with Cronenworth at the plate, but he threw the ball away, allowing Tatis Jr. to score. 1-0 Pads.

In the second inning, after Renfroe doubled and Thaiss walked Luis Rengifo singled Hunter home to knot the game at 1 with 2 outs, thanks in part to Tatis bobbling the ball before unleashing a throw when it appeared Renfroe was going to stop at third base.

Sandy proceeded to send San Diego down in order in the bottom of the inning.

In the third, Mickey Moniak led off with a single, then moved up a base at a time after two groundouts. Then Jo “The Hero” Adell had an RBI double to give the Angels a 2-1 lead.

In the bottom of the third, Ha-Seong Kim walked and a clutch Manny Machado later singled him home to tie the game at 2.

After both teams went down in order in the fourth inning and had no scores in the fifth, the Angels went down 1-2-3 in the top of the sixth. But big bad Machado came through again in the bottom of the sixth leading off the inning with a home run against new Angel pitcher Jose Soriano.

San Diego reliever Nick Martinez took over in the 7th inning, but Matt Thaiss was NOT nice to him. He smacked a long ball to right field on the first pitch of the inning to bring the Angels even.

Rengifo followed that up with a walk, but the next three batters made outs bringing us to the 7th inning stretch all tied up.

Angels reliever Jacob Webb took over in the 7th and struck out the first batter, but a double, intentional walk, and conventional walk loaded the bases. With Xander Bogaerts up at the plate, the home plate umpire didn’t feel like giving Webb two straight borderline pitches, prompting Phil Nevin to get into a nice argument with the ump and get tossed out. But, after the ump gave a sympathy strike, Bogaerts grounded out to the pitcher allowing the go ahead run to score from third. 4-3 Padres.

In the top of the 8th, Tom Cosgrove blanked the “heart” of the Angels lineup consisting of Shohei, Adell, and Moustakas. Chris Devenski wasn’t so lucky in the bottom of the inning. It started off promising when he got two straight groundouts to first base, but what followed was a walk, a single, and two more walks, the last being with the bases loaded, giving San Diego an insurance run. 5-3 Padres.

Josh Hader came in to close the game for the third straight game and he did so successfully, working around a Ward walk. Angels lose again and are now only one game over .500 going into the last 2 games of the “half” at Dodger Stadium. Boooooooo!!!

Angels: sinking, hobbled, hapless.

Par for the course.

Silseth 7 innings, 3 hits, 1 ER, 0 walks, 8 strike outs. Now 4-1, with a 2.79 ERA at salt lake. So why do we have to keep bringing up one crappy reliever after another??

Bring him up, move Barria to long relief.

Because every time he comes back up here he shits the bed by the 3rd inning or the second time around the line up which ever comes first.

Dudes very young. Let him come up, move Barria to the pen and let Chase get 10-12 starts under his belt. See how he does.

Firecracker Phil is way over his head. His blood pressure must be through the roof. 1 win at Chavez Revine is what I hope for.

Ohtani gets traded leading to Ren-done demanding a trade for the Angels not keeping a competitive team together around Said Mr Done. 🤷‍♂️ The disrespect will be hard felt by him.

Mets just scored tying run and come back from behind run for lead after 2 outs in the 9th inning against Diamondbacks. We have not done anything like that lately.

We had many games in April and May when we were competitive even when we were down, and we have had some success coming back from behind and won them. Is it Urshela, who I miss the most?

Angels still have a shot at even better NPB pitcher in Yoshinobu Yamamoto. It is going to cost $$$$$$$$$.

Just for comparison, MFYankees paid $155 MM x 7 years for Masahiro Tanaka and needed to pay additional $ 20 MM for posting fee to Rakuten Golden Eagles in 2014. I predict he will at least garner $200 MM x 7 years.

I think he wants to go to an organization where the injury risk is high and the ownership treats running a team more like running a marketing agency

He has no choice in the matter. Whoever posts the highest amount gets to talk to his team (Orix Buffaloes) exclusively. It will be most likely MFYankees because Tanaka did fairly well in NYC although he was not really lights out because of partially torn UCL for which he decided not to have TJ surgery. He became a totally different pitcher after that, nibbling corners with breaking balls.

Yamamoto has the first right of refusal, but I doubt he would decline MFYankees.

Why would Senga want to be tortured as well? Ohtani probably told him to go to the Mets for the sake of his sanity

But seriously, Perry must be in a panic. What can he do that will work right away? That would keep us competitive and induce Shohei to re-sign? We have 27 days left until D-Day. Decision Day on trade or not

Even as one of the more optimistic fans I’m tired of spinning.

Ride out the season with Ohtani and hold on to any of the few “blue chip” prospects we have.

Perry probably gets fired, Ohtani probably leaves, and Arte restarts the same cycle.

OR Mickey and Jo become superstars and lead us to the playoffs.

The only way they trade ohtani is if “SmArte” orders it in an impetuous rage like he did when he ordered Tony Reagins to trade for Vernon Wells.

He will be receiving many calls regarding Shohei even though he has previously declared that he is not trading him before deadline. I don’t know he shuts them down before they start talking about who they would make available. Part of me is curious what kind of names have been floating around, like Carroll, De La Cruz, Gallen, Sheehan, Arozarena, etc.

1-7 in our last 8. Maddon’s fault.

I’m being bitter. Honestly it’s Arte’s for letting the farm system die. And for signing 3 guys for $103 million a year and hamstringing each successive GM.

#progress.

Seriously tho, I am sad. I don’t want to trade Ohtani and I know it’s unlikely he resigns.

Season feels over. Angels baseball baby
