Black Magic Makes Griffin Canning Lose Strike Zone for 4 Batters in Angels Loss

Diamondbacks 6 Angels 2

A teensy tiny bit of insight into the postgame process. Oftentimes, staffwriters start early because we need to try and pump these out as close to the ending of a game as possible for the purpose of engagement and keeping the site up. It’s a bit of a hassle, therefore, when a game is late and close and we don’t know what to type or what to say because the tone we want to take hasn’t quite revealed itself yet.

Of course, you can imagine my relief when a game is over by the top of the 2nd inning allowing one to type away as they cope, seethe, and feel the frustration fester inside the depths of their core. Griffin Canning is truly an Angel tonight, giving me the satisfaction of angrily and loudly clack-clack-clacking a rant on my keyboard just a mere hour into the game.

Starting pitching seems to have all fallen apart at the same time, and interestingly enough, they seem to now be doing it in big singular collapses that suddenly right themselves after the game is safely out of reach. Last night was Patrick Sandoval getting BABIPed by a bunch of soft contact and tonight, Canning utterly went blind and was throwing into the wrong area code for 4 straight batters with two outs. Of course, he realized right in the nick of time (with the bases loaded and a full count that he could only put his slider in the zone, so he proceeded to deliver it middle middle where even my grandmother could send it into the stands. He then returned to form and promptly STRUCK OUT THE NEXT 5 BATTERS IN A ROW and didn’t even allow another baserunner through the rest of his performance. He ended up throwing 112 pitches as if he was going for a complete game shutout while striking out 9 including the entirety of the Diamondbacks’ side of the 6th inning.

If you didn’t catch that, Griffin Canning lost the game in what can only be described as a freak occurence before turning into the future ace he’s looked like all June long.

It’s almost like the baseball gods are giving us our divine retribution for having scored a lot against Colorado. At the very least, Chase Anderson must have called up his witchy buddy from back in high school and put a hex on the team, just like Brett Phillips did last year after Rendon’s left-handed homer.

I know what you’re going to say. “Well, Griffin Canning may have had that bad inning, but you can’t win if you don’t score some runs.” First of all, I’m not even blaming players at this point. This is some quite apparent voodoo garbage sucking the life out of the organization when it finally has the chance to earn its keep. This is just a baseball team. What can we be expected to do against shamanic evil? Or, alternate theory: maybe it’s because they won on a Saturday. The Halos were doing great as long as we were guaranteed to lose every 7th day.

Oh by the way, Ohtani hit his 30th home run a record-setting 493 feet and Trout continued to get hot with another multi-hit day. Fans have Tungsten Arm O’Doyle comments coming their way, so here’s the small consolation.

Kirby is pitching NO-HITTER after 5 innings against the Rays. I either jinxed him and Mariners, or would be happy that the Rays got no hit. Either way, I will be happy.

Rays just tied Mariners right after Kirby lost his no hitter bid. We should cancel the rest of the season and just start Rays vs Braves World Series right after ASG. 😆

Baseball is crazy. A’s knocked out Dylan Cease in 5th inning, who dominated Angels in the last series, and managed to win two in a row against White Sox. They can sweep the White Sox tomorrow. Both Toronto lost against lowly Red Sox and MFYankees lost the first game of double header against struggling St. Louis. Yankee’s second game has not started yet due to multiple rain delays. It is just crazy.

And Rays and Braves keep winning. Perhaps we should cancel all the remaining games after ASG and start World Series between those two teams. Not too many months left before NFL preseason games start. 😆

Interesting decision. Nevin chose to give Shohei extra day of rest because of cracked fingernail, I thought Anaheim was surrounded by many competent manicurists.

P.S. I am just mocking broken fingernail part, I don’t know why he is pitching Tuesday. This assures that he will not pitch against Doyers next weekend.

MLBTR just reported that Shane McClanahan is going on 15D IL. Framber Valdez is being skipped for tomorrow’s projected start against Rangers. Both pitchers are in the top 5 candidates currently for AL Cy Young awards.

Do you think the pitch clock is the reason for the rush of injuries to the starting pitchers? Our starting pitcher corps, except for Jose Suarez, have been relatively healthy. Could 6 man rotation be related to their intactness?

Or is it Dusty Baker’s evil shrewdness to preserve Framber Valdez, so he does not have to use Valdez for ASG and rest him for his start against Shohei and Angels right after the event?

I am certain pitchers being rushed because of the pitch clock is causing injuries.

As teams coddle their pitchers with pitch counts, occurrences of injuries have increased. I don’t see pitch clocks having any impact. It could be flaws in pitching motion or the junk bag of pitch types are adding extra torque to the elbow. Joyce was easy to see his arm would fail. Also, radar guns don’t help.

John Smoltz has repeatedly said that the way pitchers are expected to throw as hard as they can within the pitch count limit is leading to pitching injuries. He supports the way pitchers of yesteryears used to pitch; just 70 to 80 % of their strength and only use their 100% when they need to later in the game. Unfortunately, he does not have that many GMs and managers who would agree with his theory.

With over 85% approval rate of new MLB rules amongst baseball fans they polled, I have to take the report with a grain of salt. I don’t think Manfraud is going back to what used to be.

The slide has started sadly. If they are going to stop it, the trio of Anderson, Detmers and Ohtani as the next three pitchers must produce. I’m not exactly optimistic but I am hopeful. We will see.

They always talk about the starting staff having a competition between themselves. Continue the chain of good starts, do better than the last guy. If feeds on itself.

Then the opposite is true. 3 shitty losing starts in a row. Probably will continue. That feeds on itself too.

Thanks Baseball God.

It sounds like some kind of contagious virus. I have heard that these starting pitchers are pretty intimate with each other as in camaraderie, but we should caution and encourage them to wash hands between their high fives.

Arizona is trotting out another “mid” on paper arm and he’s a righty so I’m going with the following lineup:

Moniak – LF
Trout – CF
Ohtani – DH
Drury – 2B
Rendon – 3B
Moose – 1B
Renfroe – RF
Thaiss – C
Fletcher – SS

Drury & Rendon might flip-flop order wise, but Drury has been very productive most of the season.

I’m least confident in Moose starting, but I think that Phil was go the lefty vs. righty matchup. I suppose it could be Drury at 1B and Rengifo at 2B, but I think he’ll approach this with offense in mind. We need to win, obviously.

Rendon will be batting 4th if he plays.Jeff Fletcher pondered this same issue yesterday before the Druinjury was announced.

I understand the impetus to play Rendon, but I don’t quite agree with this hard & fast rule that he must bat 4th. Anyway, regardless of order, these MoFos need to produce. Hopefully that starts tonight.

I was pretty disgusted last night because, with last night loss, Angels could not win 15 games in June; winning 15 games per month was my emotional lift for the first 2 months of the season, Visiting this site is usually somewhat soul consoling, and your post always serves that purpose.

Another pattern that I will be hanging on at this moment is that Angels have not lost more than 3 in a row this season.

I like your prediction of starting line up. If we go by alternating, then it could go L/R/L/R/L/R/L/R/R->Moniak/Trout/Ohtani/Rendon/Moose/Drury/Thaiss/Renfroe/Fletcher

If Drury is not playing, Escobar will be playing.

We need to win this game today. Let’s go Angels!

It could be worse. I’m from LA originally and lived a few miles from Chaves Ravine (Pasadena, Eagle Rock & El Sereno among other parts of the county) and I made a conscious decision to be an Angels fan as a kid – probably the whole contrarian mindset I suppose.

Fast forward to now living in Laguna Niguel (since 2018) and the doyers are more popular down here than the Angels. We were at a bar last night and the doyer game is on TV. People like winners, I get it.

Not sure where I’m going with this meandering post.

Anyway, tonight would be a nice night for Tyler Anderson to pitch his best game of the season, eh?

My late father was so called anti Tokyo Giants fan; he always cheered for the opponents. I was the exact opposite because they were a great team with many star players like Sadaharu Oh and Shigeru Nagashima, living and growing up in Tokyo

Now, I think I understand why he was anti Giants. Doyers are like my old favorite NPB team, storied and legendary, but also pompous and arrogant. However Shohei decided to join Angels (the delusional part of my brain still says Shigetoshi Hasegawa), I am glad he chose to wear red rather than blue.

It’s been a while since I’ve heard the name Hasegawa uttered and it brings back the fun old memories of the whole “Get Shiggy with it” line that seemingly everyone said when he pitched. Mediocre pitcher in the grand scheme, but everyone liked him.

As for Shohei, I’m glad he chose the Angels too and it’s sooooo unfortunate that this team isn’t better. He and the baseball world need to see him in the playoffs. I hope the baseball Gods shine us, please.

I’ve noticed over the years that American’s have some sort of indefinable “soft spot” for Japanese players and always have as far as I can recall.

Totally off topic, but half
of my tats are Japanese inspired and for no other reason that I thought (still think) they look cool.

No worries. Just stuff that is probably stereotypical that I thought looked cool. I wish I could say that it was all predicated on some coherent & well researched theme, but it wasn’t. It’s more accurate to say that they’re a Japanese inspired with an obvious SoCal flavor.

I’ll send over a few photos shortly.

The “Geisha” is skeletal behind the fan, the “warrior mask” hurt the lost because it’s on the inner bicep and the “Pagoda” sort of seemed to fit theme wise. These are all wrapped around my right arm.

I could almost imagine the warrior wearing the Kabuto, which would bring homerun trend for the Angels. I like them. I am glad they are all PG grade. I was little worried that they might violate CtPG community guidelines. 😉

This is what Diamondbacks pitcher said about the homerun.

“It was loud,” Henry said of the sound of the ball hitting Ohtani’s bat. “I’ll leave it at that. I didn’t watch it. I don’t really like to watch home runs. It didn’t feel good leaving the hand. It was just kind of one of those pitches. Thankfully, I didn’t watch it. I just heard it.”

Even through my smartphone’s tiny speaker, it startled the hell out of me.

G2 was a Percival fastball challenge right down the middle while he was protecting a 2 run 2 out 9th inning lead.

Percy didnt care he lost that challenge as he was ultra confident no-one else was going to score a run off after him.
