LA Angels Thursday News Crash: Knee Surgery

Andrew Velazquez is having knee surgery to repair a torn meniscus in his right knee. His season is over. Michael Stefanic is up from Salt Lake City. The Angels got their butts whipped late in yesterday’s game to make it official that they lose more than they win. Here is another “trade Mike Trout” article.

The Rays will reinstate Shane McClanahan from the injured list today. The Phillies claimed Tayler Scott off waivers from the Padres. The Reds got Nick Northcut from the Red Sox as the player to be named later in the Tommy Pham trade. The Reds released T.J. Zeuch in order to make room for Justin Dunn who returned from the injured list. Meanwhile the Red Sox designated Jeurys Familia for assignment. The Astros are hoping that Justin Verlander will return tomorrow. He’s been on the IL with a fascial disruption in his calf.

The Nationals signed Juan Minaya to a minor league deal. Michael Hermosillo will get some playing time in center field now that Rafael Ortega suffered a season ending finger fracture. The Cubs also selected the contract of infielder/outfielder Jared Young who is probably the back up plan in case Hermosillo sucks. Apparently Cooper Criswell was pretty good in his start for the Tampa Bay Rays. The Twins placed Randy Dobnak on outright waivers. He’ll probably pass through waivers unclaimed because he has been ineffective and yet he has a long term contract.

The MLBPA now officially represents the minor league players.

MLBTR had a nice little ditty about the left handed starters the team has developed… I clicked on it…. it was a blank page cause Arte, and cause the Angels are not capable of developing any players. Cause Arte, and no POBO.

If we had a magickal POBO the last 8 seasons, we would have won the WS at least 5 times!

Amazing how most pro sports teams that are very successful have a President Of Player Personnel. Maybe the Rams and the Warriors should take your (really it’s OK to not be a Grichy minion) advice and just hire a janitor.

So…. you must be the guy that can finally tell me what the difference is between what a POBO does and a GM does…. other than just being a guy who has a different title who’s former assistant GM is now called GM.

I bet you can even show me where you got said info. Please tell us and give us sources. I can’t wait to finally get this sorted out.

Question has the “player to be named later” ever turned into even an average player. Seems to me teams should just forget about the player to be name later and it should be ‘the player you get to keep” instead.

Had no idea that Skaggs was a player to be named later. I guess he was league average, we’ll never know what he could have been had he not O’d. 🤔

Looks like it was possible he was a player to be named later, this year he has been a been better than average, but is this an his new normal, or will be regress back to what he has been before.

Yep according to BB ReferenceCron was traded to TB on February 17, 2018 and Luis was sent to us on March 20, 2018 to complete the trade. it probably took a month for him to get a Visa and get out of Venezuela.

Shohei Ohtani’s MVP case based on WAR (mlb.com)
I just have to believe that 12 wins as a pitcher is worth more than 20 more home runs.

gitchogritchoffmypettis
Legend
Reply to  Mikeal1st

“The answer is it’s complicated.”Jeebz, what is this guy, a lady on Tik Tok?

Ohtani gets WAR as a pitcher. He gets WAR as a hitter. Add em up, it’s Ohtani’s WAR. Him doing it at the same time doesn’t mean he drove in more runs or prevented more runs. He’s getting double credit. If he were just a DH, or even an outfielder, he’d have a lower WAR. If pitcher’s WAR is an issue, then it’s an issue for all pitchers.

It’s only complicated if you are wish that Judge would fail n Shohei would win (yes please) or you desperately need to write this same story from a slightly different angle.

Pitcher’s WAR is a problem, but it has always been a problem. The only chance a pitcher serious has at winning the MVP (which has happened, obviously) is when there are no stand out offensive performances (also the pitcher has to do something extraordinary – like Verlander’s 24 wins in 2011). Otherwise, the MVP is based on the best bat.

I think one of the issues this year is that Ohtani’s bat is not as good as his arm.
He is top 3 in the Cy race, and a top 20 bat this year.
If it were the reverse (like last year) this is a different conversation.

In my mind, keeping Trout and signing Trout are not the problem. It is the non-performing contracts like Rendon, Upton and all the ones going back that have been and are the problem. Off-loading Rendon somehow/someway would be a great result. I’m sure if he went to any other team, he would resume his prior to the Angels ways. No team is dumb enough to take over that contract, so that’s the thing. Hopefully new management and ownership can take a fresh look and things and come up with a plan that lets us keep the players who are good and get rid of the ones who aren’t.

Its the non performing Player development system that has condemned this team. All the other non performing contracts are just window dressing bullshit.

Offloading Rendon only helps if you replace him with someone better and you increase the payroll by the amount it costs to do so (rather than using funds that would have been used to fill a different position). Otherwise you are just swapping one problem for another.

I’m fine if they trade Trout, and i’m fine if a new owner comes in with the explicit goal of getting that man a ring.

I just want to win. If bulldozing the team and starting over is how they want to pursue that, cool.

If they want to keep Mike, extend Ohtani, and spend the dough needed to win NOW while rebuilding, cool.

I just want to know there’s a plan.

You know what would be a good look for the new owners? Spending serious, intelligent money on player development, international signings and free agent acquisitions including Shohei Ohtani. We would have this franchise winning and competing for championships at or before it would take us to complete a complete tear down and rebuild. It took the Cubs 4 years and the Astros 5 years to turn their franchises into winning ball clubs.

I dont believe We need to go through 5 to 6 years of hell ( including next seasons limbo ) with a new owner just because our current owner was too cheap to build a complete ball club the last 12 seasons.

That’s why I half-jokingly hope for someone like Bezos or Musk to buy the team, and then not pay much attention to it because it’s just a side-hobby to him, and hire a group of the best baseball minds available (i.e. POBO… yes infallible!) to run the thing with no payroll limits.

Yup. The billionaire just buys stuff for 3 billion then just doesn’t pay attention cause it’s his SEGA and not an NES?

They’ll just have someone pay attention to it for them. A business person who they then pay attention to and order around. Could be good, could be bad depending on who our “musk” puts in as his Carpino and who this new Carpino reports to, who then reports to a guy, who then reports to Musk, who then attends a Zoom call once a month.

But as long as there’s a POBO, which is extremely NOT the same as a General Manager.

Blasphemy! I’d much rather keep a losing team while getting to see Mike Trout’s greatness.

Unless we’re acquiring the next Mike Trout as part of a rebuild, I don’t want it.

gitchogritchoffmypettis

My absolutely devoid of logic fan brain wants to keep Trout just because he is MY TROUT. We finally have our actually great all time great and I want to see him retire a halo so we can stop playing like Tim Salmon is more than just the Ryan Klesko colored blip he’d be on another team’s history.

It does make sense to dump his salary though if we need a rebuild.

I am using logic. Just so happens that my logic puts Mike Trout’s individual success above that of the team.

Actually, we beat both Ensburgs and Youngs teams if I remember right. I just sucked.

Yeah if there was a clear plan in place to win that required trading Trout, fine. But it would be cool to keep him and win with him eventually.

Losing Trout AND Ohtani would be a bit of a gut punch given their historical significance. I’d ideally like one to stick around so we can build a statue.

I’d love to keep him, but we should probably trade Ohtani. He’s the trade piece that can revive our farm. Maybe trade Sandoval too. And who ever else we can get something for. Ward?

If we truly won’t ever see a healthy Trout/Rendon/Ohtani season ( as most around here claim), not to mention Walsh and Fletcher, then the answer is burn it down. I actually think the roster we have will be pretty strong if it ever actually takes the field for most of a season, but do we really want that? Then it would look like Arte and his FO had a plan. That would be turrible.

We are probably stuck with Trout, and that’s OK cause I loves him. But we should probably give the people what they want and burn this down to the waterline. If Arte actually “Girdy burr derrp durr moneh fur depth an sturf” it will mean signing more guys who we will just hate who will probably get hurt or become half the player they were last season because poison Ju Ju.

I say let’s just Thanos this shit, let a new owner come in with as clean a slate as we can get and see what happens. I’m sure everything will be completely different when there’s just a different billionaire in charge…. oh, and a POBO…. which is totally different than a GM.
