Moreno Family Exploring Sale of the Angels

In news straight out of left field, this dropped today.

This would be a huge development. Under the Moreno family the Angels have become big spenders but it hasn’t related to on field success. And there’s been plenty of off the field drama.

This story is just breaking. Stay tuned to CtPG as it develops.

Gotta hope the avalanche of media dunking on Arte’s past decade as failed fantasy GM/Owner will only hasten his exit.

Can’t show his face at games anymore. Genie is out of the bottle. Go back to Arizona.

No they did not trade him in any way shape or form. The Dodgers were for sale and they didn’t want to jack up the price by signing Piazza who was at that time a free agent.

“Piazza played seven seasons for the Dodgers until he was traded to the Florida Marlins on May 15, 1998, after an offseason in which Piazza wanted a new contract before being eligible for arbitration; he wanted $105 million for seven years while the Dodgers offered six years for $76 million.” Dude go away.

As soon as the Anaheim stadium deal tanked, I told my wife Arte would sell or relocate. No chance at all that Anaheim will ever approve another favorable deal for the stadium.

In a few years we’ll have to drive into that cesspool called the city of Los Angeles 💩 to see an Angel game

Recently at least. The Rams he also owned in St. Louis were like Arte’s Angels if you took away Trout and Ohtani and the best player was Gosselin.

It would be pretty cool if we got a “balls out” owner like Kroenke…. though it will be laughable watching the Hate Rich Guy folks enjoy Kroenke as an owner. He’ll spend, but he’s not hands off, and he’s also gonna make his money, which means we’re all gonna pay more, a lot more if he builds a stadium.

If any of you can stand it, ask an Arsenal fan about being owned by Stan. The Rams are a completely different case than the Angels because they will basically make him a lot more money AND they are in the “new and shiny” faze of being in LA. Opperative term IN LA. (Yes, I know, Inglewood, which is LA.) Arsenal fans that I know seem OK with Stan owning the team, but it hasn’t been an absolute dream come true. I also expect the general character of what the Rams do to change over the next ten years too.

This announcement means several things for sure:

At best 2023 is the last season for Ohtani in a Halo uni
No discussions at all will take place w/Ohtani from Moreno’s camp
The Halos will no longer play in Anaheim once the last extension is over
New owner is not going to break the bank and go over the cap

This is actually NOT good news.

Signing Ohtani would drive up the price of the team, basic math dude. You buy all current & future debts owed by a business when you sell it, in this case all guaranteed contracts.

Cowboy26
Legend

Reply to  Angelz4ever

Uh your talking about allowable accounting sports franchise depreciation methods dude. Not necessarily the value of the team. the Value of the Angels is what some one is willing to pay for it.

Were the Clippers worth $2 Billion when Ballmer wrote that check to the Sterlings? Surprisingly Yes because thats what he paid for it. You really think Mark Walton agreed to pay $4.55 billion for the Denver Broncos because they have Russell Wilson? It had no bearing on any existing contracts dude. It will be the same with the Angels. Will someone pay more to have Ohtani on the team? maybe . Will someone pay less because the GOAT is tethered to the team through a contract until 2029? Possibly. But in todays world when it comes to sports franchises, logic and good business sense dont really seem to apply anymore.

That is incorrect sir. If the Halos owed (For example) $700M in contracts for the next five years that becomes part of the cost along with “value” which is always in the eyes of the beholder.

Cowboy26
Legend

Reply to  Angelz4ever

Value is in the eyes on the buyer. Cost is determined based upon acceptable accounting practices and established legal precedent.

If this statement is incorrect Einstein then for all of our edification please correlate the recent sale price of the Denver Broncos and the recent sale price of the New York Mets with their existing player contracts at the time of sale.

I’ll wait…

Agree the Moreno camp will stay clear of the Ohtani deal. I think Arte will want to get out before he has to deal with him. Imagine, being remembered in the history books as the owner and GM who traded him? it would be Harry Frazee all over again.

And….the speculation of who may be the next owner starts!

Stan Kroenke ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
Mark Cuban 🙅
Steve Ballmer 🙅
Henry & Susan Samueli 🙅

It looks like the winner could be……. JOE LACOB

Money quotes from the article:

“Can’t answer this question that fast,” Lacob told The Times on Tuesday. “We look at good opportunities.”
He added a smile emoji.

I became an Angels fan and worked at Anaheim Stadium for seven years as a peanut vendor,” he told the San Francisco Chronicle in a story published last month.

Lacob also told the Chronicle he looked into the Angels when the Walt Disney Co. put the team up for sale in 2002

https://www.latimes.com/sports/angels/story/2022-08-23/who-will-buy-the-angels-from-arte-moreno-joe-lacob

Should be some fun few months ahead, except for the baseball games itself.

Ahh this is bittersweet. Arte was not a good owner in that he should have let baseball people in the f.o. do their thing ala the late Jerry Buss. As far as prices, I always felt it was a good value if you live in the area and I will miss the “local perks”. I feel Angel Games are affordable if you look -like in the way I use the McDonald’s app to get a free big mac and buying a .99 cent soda. I live in the 92802 and always buy my tix at the Big A to not pay fees. I also buy those seats in the right field corner that r always discounted and move to a better spot in latter innings. I also like you can take food and drinks to games. When my wife doesn’t go w me and the kids, they r really good about letting her drop us off in the orangewood entrance and letting her u turn and leave so I don’t have to pay parking. Those little perks will be gone when Arte leaves. We will be as expensive or more than going to a Dodgers game. Bye Arte, you will be missed, kind of.

I think Buster Only is out of touch as it relates to Ohtani’s value. I don’t subscribe to the fact you get less for a player during an offseason than at the trading deadline. How can you get established major league assets in lieu of prospects if the team you are trading with needs them for their own pennant race?

And as its been proven time and time again, highly regarded prospects can easily turn into suspects.

GrandpaBaseball

In this case he might be right. Ohtani could potentially take a team to 2 post season runs and that would have netted possibly more in return. Moreno is as dumb as a bag of baseballs.

He had one good quote though: Many executives believe that the Angels have not come close to exploiting the potential of their market. “Because that place might be the best to work in in baseball,” one official said. “The weather is perfect. Arte knew he was going to sell months ago, maybe longer. He never would have wanted what is best for the Angels, this is and always has been about his ego. Blocking a huge get for Shohei, he just was not going to watch Shohei take another team to the top, especially the Dodgers.

Cowboy26

There’s no question Arte has a large Ego. But I don’t equate the failure to trade Ohtani at the deadline of further evidence of his oversized dome. If I have determined that selling this franchise is the best course of action going forward I would not do anything that would detrimentally impact value including getting rid of your largest marketable star.

as a fan of the Portland Trailblazers I’ve seen this movie. The Allen family is also exploring selling, as Paul Allen suggested before he died. Phil Knight is willing to spend a huge amount for the team yet Paul’s sister, Jody, is being coy and talking about maybe by 2030. So until we see an actual sale it’s just as you say. Maybe.

It’s going to be pretty awesome when the Angels new ownership group does for us what Paul Allen did for the Trail Blazers. He was like “F*** business! But parking and beer prices! He spends on big stars! Would you rather have an owner like the A’s? 3 million fans! No.

Hopefully he sells to someone that will spend like current Mets/Dodgers ownership, and who will finally invest in player dev.

I remember the days when I felt my team was a 2nd or 3rd tier small market team when you didn’t even let yourself dream that we might sign the big FA we needed. Maybe the former star who is past 33. And Trout? No way he gets extended… he would have been traded away a la Oakland A’s style. Always hoping for lightning in a bottle when we’d get the right combo of cheap players we happened to have, to all play good for a season and get us to the postseason, before they would leave as free agents and join the Yankees the next season.
So, please, big spender and invest in development.

This is a very in-depth, damning report of the Angels by Mike DiGiovanna. It’s a great read for those who have LA Time subscription. Chris Iannetta went on the record. His quotes are very, very telling.

https://www.latimes.com/sports/angels/story/2022-08-23/angels-lost-decade-mike-trout-arte-moreno-shohei-ohtani

Some highlights of the article:

The club is on pace to sell fewer than 2.6 million tickets in 2022, the first full season since Arte Moreno bought the team in 2003 that it has not sold 3 million tickets. Empty seats outnumber spectators on most nights Ohtani doesn’t pitch.

They need a better hitting shortstop, a power-hitting corner outfielder and perhaps a new first baseman and catcher to bolster a thin lineup that — unlike pitching-poor teams of the past — has been the primary culprit in this season’s demise. The bench needs to be upgraded. And, of course, Rendon, Trout and Ohtani need to stay relatively healthy.

Arte is not going to go over that tax threshold — he treats it as a hard cap, and that’s unfortunate,” Iannetta said earlier this month, before Moreno announced that he might sell the team. “It’s really doing a disservice to his season-ticket holders, to the game, and to all of the players who really want to win.”

“It just feels disjointed, like there’s no plan. And then, right up the freeway, you’ve got [Dodgers President of Baseball Operations] Andrew Friedman, who has an incredible plan.”

“They signed him for a ton of money, and the first day he took batting practice with a wood bat in Tempe, we all looked at each other and were, like, seriously?” Iannetta said of Baldoquin. “I’m not the best at projecting out, but he didn’t look like a prospect.”

OUCH!!!!

To be fair, he does have a Destructo-Beam. Maybe Mike D was afraid he’d be destructo’d?

Best news I’ve heard all season! Hopefully the new owners bring back:

Not to want to be negative to you, but I’m pretty sure I read that now it is not allowed for any team to name itself after a state. It is grandfathered in for teams already named that way. But we can’t change back.

I’d prefer just sticking with LA instead of Anaheim. LA is actually a city known around the world. Go to Italy and say “I’m from Anaheim.” Blank stare. Say LA, NY, Houston, Boston, Atlanta, etc. and they know. That’s why I can’t blame Arte for the name change really. The dude knows business and marketing.

Note to new ownership…make sure this doesn’t happen in whatever stadium we play in

There was definitely more than a lead blown at that game.

I think there are other worse things to be concerned with. This goes on in the suites and in restrooms too! In other news water is wet and the sun is hot 😉

The restrooms? Really ?

I would assume you are talking about the women’s restroom since I have been to hundreds of games at Angel Stadium over the years and have yet to see or hear anything that would indicate that is true.

The one time I was in the women’s restroom (it was legit, Mrs. red was in her wheelchair, and there were no family restrooms available at the time) I saw nothing like that. Of course I did my best to keep my eyes focused on the floor to avoid issues.

At the Oakland stadium, this could be like a tree falling in the forest. Did it make a sound? Nobody was around to hear it!

It is how the ancient bearded man said, if a blow job happens in the world’s largest public bathroom but no one is their to see it, has the job been done at all?
