LA Angels Tuesday News Crash: Futures Game

Here is the scouting report for the Futures Game for each team. In just four more days we get a chance to see Ky Busch on a relatively big stage. Shohei Ohtani made the All Star game as both Designated Hitter and pitcher for the second year in a row. He threw the filthiest pitch of the week according to the Pitching Ninja.

The Royals acquired Drew Waters and a couple of other prospects from the Braves in exchange for the 35th pick overall in the upcoming draft. The Royals designated Foster Griffin for assignment to make a spot on the 40 man roster for Drew Waters. The Royals are also expected to promote Maikel Garcia from Double-A to the big club. For their part, the Braves selected the contract of Robinson Cano. They recently acquired Cano from the Padres in exchange for cash. Phil Gosselin was designated for assignment to make room for Cano on both the 26 man and 40 man rosters.

Here are some All Star Game jerseys that we can critique. The Dodgers Stadium concessionaires may go on strike in time for the All Star Game. In breaking All Star related news, Albert Pujols will participate in the Home Run Derby.

Wander Franco needs surgery to repair a wrist injury.

Barring a stark turnaround, the Angels are on track to miss the postseason for the 12th time in the past 13 years — even though Trout has been arguably the sport’s brightest star for 11 of those seasons and Ohtani has acted as a transformative two-way player for each of the past two.

Has he, though? I feel like there have been people who have shined brighter in the public’s eye over Trout. While the stats clearly favor him, his personality is just… non-existent, which is no surprise to anyone who follows the game.

I’m not sure about his personality but I do think his leadership can improve. Lead by example only gets you, and the team, so far.

Hey everyone. I know its a tough time to be an Angels fan (honestly the last 37 years of following them hasn’t been easy) but I thought I would get on here and contribute as well. I know you guys all know your stuff and I appreciate all of the insights everyone gives.

In the end I am hoping that somehow someway we can get back to building a farm system like we had in the early 2000 era full of contact hitters who played well together and understood that while the home run is great, getting on base and making solid contact should be the goal. I know, fat chance, but we can all hope and dream cant we?

Get back to playing actual team baseball. Manufacture runs and pitchers that control the zone. Would love to see that again.
Upper management needs an overhaul. Get baseball minded people vs marketing guys to get a winning culture again.

The All-Star game has lost its luster just like the Pro Bowl. Under Bud Selig a decision was made to forgo the tradition of two different leagues and just market MLB. That is why Bud had no problems with switching to the more popular NL with the Brewers.

When you have the 2 leagues being marketed as only one league then what is the purpose of even having two different leagues. Two different Leagues that were separate was always in the history of MLB important as there was a difference in the two leagues.

Umpires lined up behind catchers differently, then both sides merged and then there was no difference in the leagues umpiring. League Presidents were discontinued and leaving doing league business through the Commissioner’s Office. Again, watering down the separation of the leagues. Inter-League play was next and that continued what the goal is and that is to no longer have 2 leagues, but to have MLB (Like the NFL where the American and National Leagues are not important.) As what today is referred to as MLB has been around a lot longer than any other league, from 1901 it was for ever more battle for each league to rein supreme in their fan’s eyes. World Series were put together to see which League was the stronger. Covering cost (Including monies paid to player’s and Umpires and any profits to be split). In the 1932 what we know as the All-Star game came apart, again to display the two leagues “Greatness”. Three Days that take place for the All-Star game played and quickly back to League play was the norm. Today the All-Star break is 5 days long with many events for the game’s fans. But the Commissioner and MLB (Owner’s and other officials of MLB offices.) have decided that the game of Baseball, as we know it needs wholesale changes so “casual” fans will come out to see MLB games, nothing more than about the money, not really improving the game for the game’s sake.

The All-Star Game will always exist, but it’s future is dependent on restoring the two different Leagues.

As much as I loved Angels baseball as a kid growing up in the OC in the 70s (1965 Plymouth Fury – not a MBZ, Mr 2002) – I never ever watched an ASG all the way through. Boring AF. Can’t stand all star break game HRD etc. 2010 I was on the beach during the game. Didn’t see a single pitch. Trout and Ohtani have gotten me to watch as much of any ASGs as ever but it’s still with little interest at all.

Typically I would tune into to see how the Angel All Stars fared and continue to watch as long as there are Angels in the game (or in the case of Jared Walsh in the outfield last year) If all of the Angels were pulled by the late innings but they had performed well I would wait around to see if they would get MVP honors ( ie Fred Lynn, Garret Anderson and the GOAT as examples) but other than that meh.

i grew up in 60s-70s-80 watching the NL embarass the AL so i’m enjoying this. i love the game.

But what has lost its luster for me? The HOF – it now stand for house of frauds.

Breaking Breaking News!

“In a move that has been in the pipeline for way way longer than two days Bob Manfred has announced that, in this years Home Run Derby, sharp ground balls directly to a third baseman will count as home runs. He clarified that the ball has to be directly hit, the third baseman can only take one step to either side to catch the ball for this to count. Manfred said it’s time to stop being closed minded and embraced how rare a skill it is to ground out to third at will.”

If they really wanted to control this they should get Yunel Escobar to play third base. Then if he catches it they would not for sure it was hit directly at the third baseman.

Or better yet just stick a statue of Albert out there that he can aim at. If he hits the statue he gets credit for one homer and a free pair of new orthotics

Yea, I stopped watching the game years ago. I’ll watch for a few seconds, then I have better things to do.

One year, IIRC, in Wrigley, Trout led off the game by hitting a high fastball on a line drive over the right field fence. It looked like it got out in about .5 seconds.

The ASG has lost it’s luster for me. I couldn’t care less about Albert winning the derby (and he will) or Ohtani pitching a scoreless inning (and he will).

I want to see the Angels fighting to win the AL West. Anything short of that is a big “I don’t give a shit” moment.

Good call ihearhowie3.0. No matter who’s idea that is, it’s a really bad one. Albert has zero self awareness at this point, not sure he ever did. Let’s face it Mr. Pujols is no longer concerned with doing what it takes to win as much as Albert is with his enchanted number 700. In an incredible series of bad moves in the past few years by our beloved halos, releasing Albert wasn’t one of them. As far as appeal to the younger generation I’m pretty confident they’ll satisfied with seeing Ohtani, Judge and Harper.

Speculation this am on MLB-TV as to where Thor ends up. I think it will be Atlanta or St. Louis. Rule out Houston and Seattle, along with Dodgers and Yankees. He would not want to return to Mets and Boston is not where he would like to pitch at this point. Minnesota is a maybe along with Cleveland.

For us it won’t net a whole lot as Thor is a half season rental. But sometimes luck is the key, i.e. Sandoval or Rengifo, and we could get lucky again.

I really have enjoyed having Thor here but saving 10 million dollars is the motivator here.
Lorenzen, I think will stay, contract not up, local kid, and is eating up innings as well. I think Loup and Iggy are gone, Tepera will stay.

One of Fletcher, Rengifo, or Plumber will be traded. Stassi, Walsh and Ward could go for prospects.

Time is coming up for PTP to go to work.

MarineLayer

Interesting speculation. Obviously it would be nice to get something besides salary relief, but it would also be nice to get some of Minasian’s junk off the roster. I would be sorry to see the plumber leave.

Senator_John_Blutarsky

All these guys (Thor, Fletcher, Gifo, Plumber, Stassi, Walsh, Ward) will net a fraction of what the fans thing they are worth. It’s going to be hilarious to see the meltdown when Ward or Walsh returns a prospect rated in the 8 to 12 range of some team’s farm and outside the top 125 prospect lists.

The best trade chips are Ohtani and Sandoval. Trout is untradeable.

On the other hand, are we really going to pay Ohtani $40M per year? The team isn’t good now, and he’s making 10% of that. The sensible thing might be to trade him rather than pay him and continue in mediocrity for many more years.

These are ugly decisions, it’s about time the franchise started facing them

Depends on a contender’s needs. Kimble has been traded a few times. If you were Atlanta and a relief pitcher would get you into the World Series, would his contract make a difference if you needed a closer? Ohtani will not be traded until he says that he will not resign. Rendon’s contract prohibits a trade, Mike Trout would have to ask to be traded. Untouchables would include Sandoval, Detmers from the pitching staff.

I feel like it may have been Albert’s idea to do the derby and nobody was going to say no to him. Trotting gramps out there doesn’t feel like a Manfred idea considering he’s all about making these events more appealing to kids.

GrandpaBaseball
Legend

Albert is not on anybody’s list as a ‘roid user, but I have always suspected of his using them to put up numbers that no one else has ever all during the Steroid era. This is really a sad idea to trot him out to showcase just what? That he is past his prime?
The Commish is really just providing a circus sans the tightrope. Legacy my ass, when is MLB, BBR, MLBHoF, Baseball Digest, FG, all going to start acknowledging that Steroid use was cheating.

Robert Manfred dislikes it when people mention that he dislikes Baseball. He says he does not dislike Baseball, well if that is true, he sure knows how to not respect the sport. He is not showing the sport any dignity the sport should be demanding, now is he.

Apparently, the HR Derby is losing steam, and it’s now looking like the gaming fairway that was at the Pike in Long Beach 60 years ago. Making the HR Derby a sideshow or freak show does not add interest, it cheap0ens it. It can only be fixed by the Players, by Players who want to compete against other sluggers. Judge, Stanton, Rizzo, Trout, Ohtani, Buxton, etc vs Alonzo, Betts, Goldsmith, Arenado, Olsen, Freeman, etc. The HR Derby is losing TV rating every year too, it started losing ratings when someone determined that “back, back, back, back, back, gone” and the player’s nicknames were no longer important, and that Berman no longer should call the Derby on ESPN. Putting Albert in the Derby is not going to change anything.

Literally in the last two days, I have read that Bobby Grich wasn’t a HOF’er. Wrong. He was. A matter of opinion I guess, but sheesh.

And that second, Michael Stefanic has cost the team several games already so far, even though he’s had like 18 career ABs. By the way, he has a .933 OPS and a 173 OPS+. Heaven help me.

It’s bad enough dealing with the suckage of team itself or from the misguided ramblings of 2002heaven the closet Mariners fan, but this is getting tougher all the time

Depending on sun exposure, the white comment might be in the rear view mirror as well.

F*** I hate being white and middle aged. Is there anything I can do to change it so people don’t have to suffer through being around me?

Should I try listening to reggae all the time? It’ll hurt, but I’ll try.

I don’t think he has the energy to last. When he did this a few years ago he visibly ran out of steam. If he has the endurance, sure he could win it all but I bet he gets gassed fast.

You’re probably dead on. Unless we can get him a set of these:

I feel this way about the last 9 Angels’ seasons

Don’t have the endurance when the team runs out of gas fast. It’s a long damn season

Can we just have a 6 week season next year?

It will be for all intents and purposes because after that we’ll be out of contention and you can just ignore the last 130-ish games.

Then we’d be just about as legit as the 2020 World Champion Dodgers

or the 1981 WS Champion Doyers

Holy Crap! I didn’t realize that ’81 was also a shortened season! Haha! That is hilarious.

That’s the season that Montreal got totally screwed over, and probably (in the long run) caused the Nats to come into being.
