Angels get blown out by the Mariners

The Angels faced the Mariners again, having hope to win two in a row for the first time since May 24. Instead, the Angels were utterly embarrassed.

Lorenzen did not last long. He went only 5 innings, giving up 7 runs on 7 hits. He did have 3 strikeouts but also 3 walks, which cost him big time.

Not that the offense was any help. Or the defense, for that matter. Brandon Marsh made a huge error which cost the team. That didn’t mean much in the long term, as Lorenzen walked too many to really blame Marsh, but it didn’t help.

It took til the 8th for the Angels to have a clean hit and score. It was yet an other game of getting into a hole early and basically giving up.

Highlighted Lowlighted Recap

Lorenzen gave up a run in the first, putting the Angels in a hole early.

1-0 Mariners

Another came in the 2nd, as Seattle hit a home run.

2-0 Mariners

Then a 3rd run was allowed in the 3rd, this was starting to get out of hand.

Not good.

But then things unraveled fast in the 4th, with Lorenzen walking 3, including one with the bases loaded, to make the deficit 4-0.

Oh come on!

It got worse, as 3 more would score, for 4 allowed in the 4th.

7-0 Mariners

Oh, and on top of all of this, the Angels didn’t even have a hit yet. But hey, Justin Upton is back! As a Mariner… and got drilled in the head by Lorenzen… ow.

Dude, uncool

Warren came in for the 6th and allowed an another run, so it was now 8-0 Mariners.

And it keeps getting worse

At least the Angels didn’t get no hit? Stassi hit a ball to the pitcher and it just barely deflected off his glove for a hit. Maybe?

Ruled as a hit, yay!

It is a judgement call, and the scoring stayed. Not that it mattered, as Juan Lagares hit a clean triple in the 8th. Then Squid hit a double, driving in the first run for the Angels!

NOT SHUT OUT!

But that was it, the Angels didn’t score anymore and lost 8-1. At least Jack Mayfield pitched…

Put him at first base and move Walshie to left.

Hes an ex soccer goalie so I suspect McKinnon can catch a ground ball or thrown ball adequately.

We need above replacement level bats in the lineup.

The starting point is that Arte cab run this Org any way he desires. He is the owner.

He has clearly decided to run the Org as a marketing machine. The vast majority of decision makers and influencers in the organization are marketing folks not baseball people. That’s Arte’s prerogative.

And for the ordinary fan (not anyone on this board) it’s fine. They get to go to a clean ballpark with decent food items and cheer a bit for Trout and Ohtani and take some video of Ohtani swinging the bat and maybe also pitching. Sometimes they go home with a free bobblehead. Sometimes they get a hotdog, other times a pizza. Maybe they see a HR or two and high-five their buddy. Their life and mood really doesn’t change much one way or the other win or lose.

Most So Cal fans really could give a shit about any of this – they want entertainment and Arte brings it to them. Maybe the next day Disneyland is planned.

So Arte has no motivation to invest in his minor leagues or scouting or strength and conditioning. Those things don’t provide immediate marketing benefits. As hardcore baseball favs we know the benefits of those investments. But Arte is running a marketing organization not a baseball one.

It’s Arte’s prerogative. It’s his team and his money. Ultimately we have to decide as hardcore fans whether we can live and die with a team that focuses primarily on marketing and not baseball operations.

If MLB is serious about the health of every team then they need to come in evaluate what is going on in this org and make a determination to either force Moreno to change his ways or oust him out of MLB.

The baseball is good enough to avoid such scrutiny. And Arte knows he has to put at least a decent product on the field as part of marketing. The problem is that ‘decent’ or ‘average’ is not good for us die-hards. But it’s plenty fine for a marketing-focused Org.

Maybe we should change our metric of fandom if we are going to root for a marketing organization. Maybe we focus and comment on the advertising and promotion rather than the baseball?

MLB has had almost 150 years of winners and losers. Rich franchises and poor franchises, dynasties and disasters and their revenues continue to rise. Why would you change that model?

I would be in favor of the EPL model where the bottom dwellers get relegated to a loser league but we know this would never happen.

Under the current MLB model most losing franchises are going to go under and even some winning franchises will eventually. Unless we are going to have trillion dollar teams eventually. This whole thing has gotten way out of hand. By the time this is all over there maybe about 10 teams left in MLB.

Source? Or is this just your theory?

Go look at the published financial reports for the public holding companies for the Braves and Blue Jays and then tell us how the league would be forced to contract a team any time soon. The Apple TV deal is an example of this. A new found source of revenue that all of the owners can now partake in despite frugal and detrimental team operational decisions. I think they will defend expand the league before they contract.

Every day, better teams are trying to slip guys back to the minors whom they have removed from their 40 mans. I track this because I play in deep fantasy leagues. I would hope Minasian takes a look too, because the bottom half of our roster truly is “overexposed.”

2018, in the minors? That is four years ago.

In two years in the majors, he isn’t even much of an upgrade from Lagares (who I agree is done).

I would rather have Adell back up – and let them figure out a sequence where Marsh, Ward and Adell all get enough time.

We have to admit that this jerk (Rendon) does not want to play for this team anymore. He was to quick to have season ending surgery. From what I take of it he is saying I don’t want to play for this team anymore. We need to get back to the days of Stoneman when he got players that wanted to play here. Look at Hamilton, Pujols and a host of others who acted the same way as Rendon.

Wow, this was a rough game to watch.

With Rendon gone for the season, you have to wonder if he can be relied upon to come back next year and contribute at all.

Someone on the board suggested putting Ward at 3rd and calling up Adell.

Why not? Doesn’t this make more sense than having Captain Jack at 3rd? and Lagares in the outfield?

In my mind, the Halos still have a shot at the postseason. The playoffs are not going to happen if Nevin keeps rolling out the same bullshit lineup as he did today.

There are only two options to improve the lineup:

1) Bring up a prospect from the farm system
2) Bring in new players from outside the organization.

I’d rather the organization (ie., Perry) take a fucking chance and bring up some young blood instead of doing the same shit over the last 20 games expecting a different result.

There are so many holes in the lineup now it feels the team is more Swiss cheese than a playoff contender.

I’m not throwing in the towel yet.

Let’s see if Perry has any balls and if Nevin is worthy of an managerial extension.

Perry, grow a pair. Do something more that just firing Joe….!

Agree with the Walsh to 3B move. I know that Cowboy pointed out in the past that he was bad defensively at that position. Easy answer — work harder on defense. Take more grounders. Work more with the infield coaches. Our offense is too weak to be rolling with Lagares and Mayfield game after game. Bring back Adell and move Ward to 3B. Our lineup will be significantly improved if that is done.

Ward to 3rd. Or a guy with a W name not named Wade…. but also not Marsh, who is not Walsh.

I dunno. If there’s a trade out there that doesn’t totally blow I hope we make it, but 3B that will actually get anyone excited are thin on the ground. Why do you think Jake Lamb is still around and Martin Prado played for so long?….

Which was actually one of the many reasons we signed Rendon.

Ummmm – who do you suggest from the farm that would be anything more than replacement value. That’s part of the problem. There is nobody. It’s crickets.

If you trade Ohtani, there is likely a SS, outfielder, pitcher and maybe even a 3B man available. But outside that kind of blockbuster- where are the players going to come from?

That is the problem. We don’t really have many AAA prospects that are ready.

I’d try:

Marsh LF
Trout CF
Ohtani DH
Ward 3rd
Walsh 1st
Duffy SS
Adell RF
Stassi C
Stefanic 2nd

Tell me this lineup doesn’t give you a glimmer of hope….

My concern for 2022 is that Nevin made out arguably the worst lineup card of the season.

Sure, he has a questionable roster but he must have felt that Duffy and Lagares were better options for this game than Walsh and Shohei.

It’s funny, I can criticize Nevin while knowing that a large part of the problem has been caused by Perry and then, beyond that, knowing that Perry is constrained by Arte. It’s like the phone call is coming from inside the house.

Anyway, this game was treated as a throwaway. When you’re losing you can’t do that.

Exactly ! Well said Eric. Yes, players do need to be rested from time to time. I get wanting to rest Shohei since he pitched last night and threw alot of pitches, and has been playing pretty much every day. But if you rest him then you have to play Walsh. Both those guys cannot be out the same game. You just can’t put that many auto outs in your lineup.

And you are correct about the losing. If you win the first three of four then you can maybe rest two guys at once — but not right now !

I like your thinking.

Put Ward at third. If he can catch, play a good outfield. He may be ok at 3rd.

And, yes, Adell, over Lagares, in the outfield.

We just can’t have

Does Canning have value (from the IL)?

Does it make sense to try to ship out Adell now, with his value low?

Do you think the As send Montas for these guys? Or is the plan to have to eat Andrus’s 15M contract (next year) while even a resurgent bat for him this year (after two years of just awful) is still below league average (90 OPS+)?

We don’t have very many good options, all we have is bad or worse.
Andrus contract runs out this year so this wouldn’t handicap us.
