LA Angels Tuesday News Crash: City Connect

Love them or hate them, these are the new Angels City Connect uniforms.  Ben Verlander called Anthony Rendon one of the top 5 switch hitters of 2022.

The Astros signed Yordan Alvarez to a six year extension.

Dallas Keuchel signed a minor league deal with the Diamondbacks.

Dave Roberts attempted to use a position player as his ninth inning pitcher when there was only a 5 run deficit.  C.B. Bucknor even had to call to New York to make sure that was against the current rules.  It is, unless that guy is designated as a two way player.

Apparently Nestor Cortes didn’t get all riled up about Jim Kaat calling him “Nestor the Molester” during a broadcast Thursday.

Yikes. My reaction was actually sad. I feel bummed the guy got fired like that, not a happy thing. I know that we can get into detailed analysis about the guy’s style/choices and argue both sides. But the guy did have a good part of good Angel’s history, and I think he liked being here, so that a bummer.

I know that we all love Rengifo, but I promise that if we get him off the roster, we start winning again, and start winning big. I’m not sure if he did something in a past life, or if he did something that we don’t know about, or maybe even he’s a secret agent out to destroy us. I know we’ve tried in the past and he always ends up coming back to us.

Here’s an idea. Why don’t we all just relax. We have the Doyers and Mets after Boston. The boot party is likely to continue. It will eventually end. There are more than 20 games left after that. We’ll see what happens.

I know, fan is short for fanatic so blah blah blah stoopid equals good. The roster we have isn’t all that bad, they are just undergoing incredibly weird suck right now. Personally, I think this level of collapse is so wild that I almost buy the theory that the players have been drugged to lose in retaliation for the stadium deal crumbling. Or the team knows how much Angels fans love to bitch, so they’re bringing us what they think we want.

No. Arte’s not going to sell the team because of a losing streak. If you think that you’re silly. Maybe they’ll fire the manager or some coaches. If they do, it will be because people who are in the building have determined that the players are adrift and the coaches have no answers. Not just the losing, but the mental breakdown. And no, CoachDad, you can’t see that on TV. All you see is hit/no hit, strike/walk… and then 4 seconds of watching to see if said player’s reaction meets with your approval.

If the coaching staff and players are still together, and are working together, and are totally failing together, it’s likely they will still ride with Joe. That’s probably for the best. For all the bullshit we like to spout about fundamental baseball knowledge as soon as we run into a twenty game horror show we forget that baseball is, fundamentally, about outcome over hundreds of at bats and innings pitched. Every time you tinker and tweek and change and mangle you reset that progression through all those innings.

We are talking about very good players here. Trout, Ohtani, Rendon, Walsh… same with pitchers like Tepera, Loup and Iglesias. We love to talk about regression to the mean here on CtPG. It’s a term that can make a bear of average intelligence feel really smart for ten seconds. But in the case of most of these players, they are at the point where they should progress towards the mean. Our sidecar players, like Ward, Rengifo, Velazquez, Marsh and Stassi have also lagged, but it’s understandable since the heart of the order is so bad right now. Long term, they are not the problem and if they carry on as they were before the last 10 games they’ll be fine. If it turns out I’m wrong about our stars and they don’t come back, we’re fked no matter who is manager, or GM, or owner.

The “stars” will recover…. or all get injured, cause TrAdition. When they do, we will win some games. but Desperately Demanding Drastic Decisions be Dictated by Dramatic Downturns almost never achieves anything but a tangled mess. Fan being short for fanatic doesn’t change that and if we set our own hair on fire every night over it it’s our own damn fault. If you’re unhappy cause we suck, it makes sense. I know I am. But if you’re at the point where you NEED some something to happen for the sake of something and you won’t stop being MadSad till it does you deserve to be miserable.

We’ve never seen this level of horror as Angels fans. It could actually be interesting to see what happens. I like pretty much all of our guys, there’s some pretty solid star power paired with hungry youth and I think they’ll bounce back strong. But you’ve got to ride out storms, not blow a hole in the bottom of your boat because it’s calmer under water. The team needs to relax, we need to relax, get things settled down and then maybe make some decisions from there (Joe?).

Well, it’s true. Having a hot April’s great. Pile up the wins. Have a great time. Even get a sense of your strengths when things go right.

But there are 140 games left…. no need to buy playoff tickets or start designing championship shirts. Even worse is when a team wins the off season or kills it in ST.

I agree with you also. I like the boat analogy.
A few nights back I found myself (seeing us blow another game) feel this quick impulse to want to throw my remote through my TV, and I immediately caught myself and realized how stupid I was being, and that I needed to chill and it is just a game (that I’m supposed to be enjoying, otherwise I shouldn’t be watching). I think that reminded myself to get the right perspective on things and from then on I haven’t been very upset about the losses (although that could also be partly a defensive mechanism of giving up). It is just a string of bad games in a row. Later this season we may find ourselves above .500 again, and win 3 in a row (triggering a Shufflebot) and then I’ll be in a happy mood and not even thinking about this losing streak anymore.
And regarding last night’s game… of course it is frustrating given the streak. If that game was in isolation, I would be bummed we lost, but taking away lots of positives about our pitching.

In all honesty, I wouldnt be mad if the losing streak goes on a few more games. At this point, winning a game does nothing to the team. But losing could change something, whether it is Arte finally realizing he’s the laughing stock of the league or some coach gets fired. The team is in full code red and nothing but radio silence.

Coming around to this viewpoint myself. This team is beyond the point of team meetings or minor roster changes. Time to get drastic. Thinking that Duffy and Lagares are adequate substitutes is just ridiculous. Arte, it’s time to let loose of the reins.

I’m in this category. The status quo of the last decade with a control chart look of plus or minus 10 games…I’m over it I guess. For better or worse, I would like drastic change. But I will be honest, I’m much more tolerant of losing now that I am outside of SoCal. Back when I worked in manufacturing I’d have to deal with the constant badgering of handfuls of East LA Doyers fan coworkers (good natured of course, but exceptionally annoying when the Dodgers had/have a lock on first place most of the time while the Angels can’t seem to get to first base). Can’t imagine having to deal with that these last two weeks!

Bu bu but, eventually everyone will tell me how right I am and thank me. That’s how it works, yes? Then they will explode in rebellion, take control of the team, and having recognized how right I was when I brought up the Rendon contract for the 700th time, install me as master… I mean supreme leader…. wait, consul.

Then I can ban anyone who looks like my wife’s boyfriend from college Anthony Rendon from ever even attending games….. then we will win.

Since some on the site have assigned the name Doomers to those of us who quite reasonably question the Angels approach and performance from time to time. In the interests of fairness, I think we need a name for those of us who are, shall I are say, unreasonably optimistic, even as the team continues its losing ways currently, but also year after year. I think Pollyannas is a good one, but of course I’m open to suggestions.

That said, I think anybody who stays on the game thread loss after loss has proven they are a true blue Angels fan, and their loyalty should not be questioned. Rather than call each other names, I think it would be best to allow each other a little latitude and simply realize we are all trying to cope with the building frustration in our own ways.

I have rooted for this team all 62 years of its existence, which means I’ve seen a whole lot of terrible, mixed in with the tremendous joy of 2002. I will always be a fan, but what I’m seeing right now is about as bad as anything in our history, given the top end of our roster. I reject any labels that are placed on me, I just try to call them as I see them, which is to me, is the very definition of a what a fan is.

This is where you’re dead wrong and allow me to fix it for you:
“quite reasonably question the Angels approach and performance from time to time.”

“ridiculously bitch and moan with each and every comment”

If you “quite reasonably question from time to time” you are very welcome here. It’s the 100% 25 hours 8 days a week 13 months out the year complaining – it’s jaded and unwelcome.

I haven’t learned shit. I will continue to bitch and moan the same way I have since I asked then manager Jim Fergosi when they were going to start winning. Mom says I was 5-6 years old at the time.

I will also be happy when the team does well, I’m not gonna try to find something wrong w/Ohtani going 3 for 5 w/a home run and 3 RBI. I want to see shuffle bot after shuffle bot posted here, endless lit Halos etc etc.

Right now they deserve to be dumped on. I’ve watched some terrible teams over the years but there seems to be a listlessness coming out of this dugout that I don’t remember ever seeing.

All that being said, how do we lose tonight? 2-1 or 9-7? 😅

Legendary implosion by that team. While this comedic run of ineptness is happening a lot earlier than that years, you never want to dig yourself a huge hole.

It’s so hard to lose this many in a row but they’ve managed to crack the code! Everyone is pressing, our bullpen has zero confidence, starters know their lead (hahaha!!! Lead) will evaporate and you have a closer who I’m sure inspires nothing right now other than guys hoping the get a chance to make a play and not watch another ball fly over the fence.

Let’s shoot for 20 and get things really shaking.

Very good points. Being a fan does not mean being completely positive no matter what. Otherwise that is Pollyanna-ish. Reality based fandom is where I am at as well.

That said – there are a group of folks/trolls on this site that seem to take pleasure in the Angels losing. It’s almost like they are miserable in their life and they want company. So if the team does well – it does not fit their negative-narrative. In short, they prefer the team to lose because they then have an audience for their Uber-negativity.

There is a big difference between being a realistic fan and a troll.

Somehow, I learned to love baseball while becoming a huge Angels fan as a kid in the middle of the “Tanana and Ryan then start crying” period. I lived and died on Leroy Stanton at bats never quite realizing just how bad those teams were. Much of baseball is about hope for things that you rationally shouldn’t expect. Perhaps the reality for this team is somewhere in between the hot start and this epic collapse. I’m attempting to reel in my expectations at this point and enjoy what I can.

As big of a bummer as this whole tire fire is…… its a much bigger bummer to let this kind of thing ruin your days for weeks on end, much less your whole month or year.

It’s possible to be positive about other things in life while being disappointed in your baseball team. In fact I’m sure of it!

It just takes too much out of me to gnash my teeth and tear my garments apart over a team I love, but also don’t expect the moon from. If I do, they will just turn into a team I love to hate.

I wondered how long during his 5X a day posts to fire Maddon it would be before he snapped and showed his colors. Nothing wrong with having an opinion, but there is also no reason to make anything personal. That’s what ills us in other areas of public discourse. Thankfully that usually does not leak into this island from lines in the sand, knock their dicks in the dirt at all costs, daily headlines.

And you bet, I poke fun at anyone claiming there is a vast International Conspiracy of Umpires to Only Screw the Angels, because Red Sox, Yankees, Dodgers, A’s (insert the name of team you hate and want all their players to STFD!). I get it, umpires suck. But they are not tipping the scales just to make the Angels lose. And I don’t mind one bit the snippy and snide comments to my snippy and snide comments 😋

Fully agree with this, MarineLayer. Being a fan of this team requires analyzing the good and the bad.

I agree with Downing that constant complaining isn’t welcome, but the other responses of name-calling of those who want to see improvement through suggestions shouldn’t be admonished as ‘Doomers.’

I suggested in yesterday’s links, the team should think about trading Trout 😱. At least think about it, if this season continues on the current trajectory. I’m just being realistic, not being a Doomer. It’s an important dichotomy.
