LA Angels Wednesday News Crash: Anaheim Trouble

Good morning Angels fans! How are you this morning? Have some links!

Angels News

Angel Stadium sale is in the news, again. The Mayor of Anaheim resigned after being caught by the FBI for bribery. Oh yeah, another resignation, Arte still wants the deal done, however. Aaaand the corruption keeps happening. Yeah, long term thinking is that the Stadium may not be sold in the end, Arte may have to sell the team, and it is very ugly. Oh, it IS official, Stadium deal is dead. Stay tuned for further updates.

In good news, the Angels finally beat Texas. Thor put the hammer down and squashing the Rangers last night.

Good vibes from Chargers!

In case you missed it, Jeff scored an interview with Angels coach Mike Gallego.

Taylor Ward is still out, can’t seem to throw right now. Uh oh. Oh yeah, and Griffin Canning isn’t getting surgery.

People are getting healthy though! Stassi is back, as is Archie Bradley! Jose Rojas DFA-ed, however.

Defense is an Angels strong suit. Very refreshing.

Around Baseball

Josh Donaldson got a 1 game suspension. Right when he got sick, so it doesn’t matter? The whole saga is so confusing. Seriously, confusing.

Manny Machado does a good thing! We need more of that in these times.

The new deep wall in Baltimore is working as intended. 15 home runs lost in the void.

Position players are pitching more again. It is truly something.

Anything I missed? Post below for upvotes!

Darrin Sutton now on Dodgers TV broadcast? He was mentioned being one of three in the booth. Go figure. GA is again in the pre-game show today.

This sort of stuff is why I really like having Syndergaard on our team. He gets it.

Talking about the stadium issue, I wouldn’t negotiate again with the current city council. They have been playing politics from the very beginning. If Long Beach comes through then the team needs to move there.

One of my concerns with all this stadium stuff is that this wrecks the forecast/plan for Arte’s future finances, which may mean that he tightens the purse strings again. Once the deal was all finalized, there was some hope that maybe he’d be more likely to crank up the payroll past the ~$180MM ceiling he seemed to always keep, to allow us to sign a big pitcher we may need (or at least not trade away 1st round draft picks to save $13MM).
Now that the deal fell apart, I hope that doesn’t mean he’ll tell Perry he can sign Ohtani to an extension, but he needs to fill the roster with AA players.
None of us really know, so I guess we’ll see.

Yeah, that worries me too. You know what should really worry a bunch of the wank squad around here? What generally happens before an owner sells a team? Do we think Arte’s gonna try to sell the team with huge contracts to Trout, Ohtani, Rendon, Raisel, and hopefully some starting pitchers?

No. Probably not. Our roster will get the scrape if he’s trying to sell the team…. and it could take a while to sell…. and rebuild thereafter…. so keep begging for a new owner people.

You have a very good point. Actually, yesterday when I saw this news, I thought about how owners always strip a team before selling, and thought… oh oh, Ohtani extension down the drain.
Imagine the hysteria if suddenly Perry trades away Ohtani in July for a ton of hot AA prospects…

How does having a top 10 payroll every year make him tighten the strings ever?

I’m talking about the fact the we’d be at like $170MM, and some really obvious pitching upgrades available on the market for $20M, and we watch them all sign with other teams year after year because of an apparent phantom salary cap from Artie. Or like I said, the idea of trading away a 1st round draft pick just to save $13MM for one single year.
Perhaps when this whole stadium thing was finalized in ink, Artie would have had some “security” (business people like stable projections) and he would have splurged and hit $210MM if needed. I think of all those “If I were Perry” articles and how handcuffed we all felt because we couldn’t raise the number.

In this case not going to happen, not getting stripped. The value of this franchise is in having both Trout and Ohtani. If those two go the new owners having nothing to draw fans in. One draws the curious, tourists, and most of all the Japanese. The other draws the kids who let Mom and Dad drive them to the Big A and pay for tickets and sit with them. Baseball fans from across the globe come to see these 2, there is nothing like this on 29 other teams and it’s what makes this franchise worth purchasing. This franchise does not own their own stadium and it’s still worth over 2 billion dollars.

If Arte is to sell, no better time than now. 6+ years on the current lease. Trout and Ohtani still in their prime, the pipeline is loaded with kids coming up, and there is a good GM.

Sounds good to me. I have to travel forever to see the Angels either way and since I’m not one of those weird childless men who loves Disneyland Anaheim has nothing else to offer while there’s some cool stuff happening in Long Beach.

I’d stay a weekend in Long Beach, the Heim, not so much.

Sounds good to me too. As long as they take the big A with them when they leave. It will costly to rip down all of the freeway overpasses on the 57 and 22 to move it….oh well, send the bill to the City of Anaheim.

Over the years, I have enjoyed my times in Anaheim but I fly into Long Beach so it would be even more convenient to be for the team to be in Long Beach. But the the Big A has to go along with the team, that is a must.

We should get them both if we can get them at a reasonable price (Jo Adell, Griffin Canning, Matt Thaiss) yes BB will give away Andrus as a throw in since he makes $15M and we still don’t have a SS. Move now or we can watch the Astros get Montas in July just like we did 22yrs ago when then GM Bill Bavasi did nothing while the Rangers got Rick Helling and nailed down the 1999 AL West Championship.
😆 😆 awaiting CB 26’s stupid trigger reaction now!!! He’ll say I misspelled Bill Bavasi’s grandmother’s maiden names.

2 issues

  1. trading within the division is rare and usually more costly for the team wanting the players
  2. Andrus sucks

I’ll take Montas, but honestly Squid is better than Andrus and super cheap.

Why would the Angels want to pay $15M to a SS with a 0.1 WAR? Heck, as bad as Squid is with the bat he still has a 1.2.

Our 63 OPS+ Squid already has 1.2 WAR. I think they are paying him 200 dollars and gave him a new X-Box.

Have they ever seen war? True war? where you carry around your friend’s ass meat in a plastic bag and kill women and children with a sharpened stick? Where the only color you wear is blood? Where you eat sorrow and drink pee?

Have you ever seen anyone reach so far for a reason to pay Elvis Andrews 15M?

The horror.

So didn’t we trade Ian Kinsler who wasn’t hitting .370 for us to the 2018 World Champion Red Sox for Ty Buttrey? We also traded Martin Maldonado for Patrick Sandoval who cheated their way to a World Series championship (They were really a 100 loss team, but they some how cheated to win all 50+ of the other games I guess). Bottom line is getting Elvis Andrus would be the same as the Red Sox getting a old and no longer very good 2B anymore. THE OLIGARCH/POBO/GM didn’t want to pay for Trey Turner or Trevor Story 6 months ago.

Andrus? You’re joking, right? Ok, good. Holy crap, had me going there.

If Montas ends up in Houston, that is too bad. We’ll just have to smack him around in a differnt pair of pants and shirt.

Kinsler on the 2018 Red Sox. So you want a All Star position player for just a fart and a hug?
Yes of course about Montas, except what if we don’t. Here’s another one I predict could happen, Shane Bieber to the Doyers (Oh we beat him with the Guardians).

are you arguing that we should give up more than a fart and a hug for Elvis because Kinsler played well for the Red Sox down the stretch after being traded to them in 2018? Thats your stance?

Yess
BTW he would also be a one yr rental since his 8 yr deal runs out this yr.
Kinsler didn’t play all that well BTW if you look at his stats on BR in 2018.
Did Maldonado play like Pudge Rodriguez for the Astros? Is a . IS A .194 BA AT SHORTSTOP A AWESOME THING TO HAVE? COME ON NOW YOU’RE ALLEGEDLY OF A VASTLY SUPERIOR FORM OF LIFE THAN ME AREN’T YOU?

Lets see, we can stick with what we have in a cheap defensive wiz SS currently sporting a .194 BA and 1.2 WAR…

ORRRRR, as you’re suggesting, we can…

trade away young talent to our hated division rival to get a soon to be 34 year old SS currently batting .227 with a 0.1 WAR and making $15M this season all based on the fact that 4 years ago Ian Kinsler was traded to the Red Sox and they won the WS, even though as you just corrected me, he didn’t even play that well for the Sox.

Thats some super sound logic you got going on.

Detmers tonight. I guess we’ll bring up a few middle infielders to play the outfield and catch. I joke. Wade in RF is Jo-worthy.

Yes, we lost 4 in a row yet we’re now on pace for 99 wins. 44 down, 118 to go. I’d say we’re well into 2022.

The outline of a new stadium deal is there with what was agreed to with Anaheim.

This makes a much clearer target for other municipalities i’d imagine:

Here’s what Anaheim was willing to do, can you match Tustin? Long Beach?

Yes, starting from scratch but a market rate for a So Cal baseball stadium was established. That should accelerate discussions if another city is interested.

History be damned, a Waterfront park in Long Beach would move the needle in the battle of LA. Anaheim will have the themepark company.

But the infrastructure of downtown Long Beach couldn’t handle that amount of people in a short period of time. I love the idea (I live here) but the 710 is a mess and the Blue Line couldn’t handle the people. Crazy to fathom how it would all work.

They had a really good chance at setting up the ballpark at the new Douglas Park in LB, but they have developed everything so far.

You can see the South/West county Vs North/East county vibe brewing down the line if the Angels move there.

I wouldn’t mind the people vs each other, I would mind a really terribly run city having to try and get this done. Step one is our mayor finally leaving. Step two is to finally fix all of LB’s infrasturture issues. If that starts to get better, then I can see this happening.

I didn’t follow the game thread last night, any comments on the bitch-move slide by Heim into Squid? Going hard into the base, totally acceptable, even if you take the player out; throwing your foot out as you slide to purposely trip a guy, not cool.

Thoughts for this week…
1. Nice comeback Thor!
2. I keep reading great things about the Angel organization this year… destiny?
3. Long Beach is Further away from me than LA (Anaheim). How about they move to Ranch Cucamonga so I drive less?
4. (This scares me) So Ward needs to be DH? Can’t see how that will displace anybody important. (Sarcasm intended here for those like me that have trouble seeing sarcasm in text)
5. Somebody on Twitter mentioned the Angels won 11 games in a row. Hopefully he’s a time traveler. (Update: He was talking about the Astros. Or maybe he’s trying to hide that he was a time traveler!)
6. I still don’t like Manny Machado because of dirty plays.
7. Nice comeback Thor!
8. Can’t wait to see the Angels beat the Yankees. Unless they lose then I’m watching that new documentary on dinosaurs on AppleTV+ while going through emotional supports on TikTok.
