Angels Walk off on Mother’s Day

On Mother’s Day 2022, the Angels looked to win the series vs the lowly Nats. Should be lowly, at least, on paper. Just like this team is great on paper.

Patrick Sandoval honored his mother by pitching today. However, his opponent paper cut him to death, with nothing getting hit hard but finding the grass nonetheless. Sandy went 5 and 2/3 innings, allowing 3 runs on 7 hits, striking out 5 while walking 3.

Poor Sandy Man

At the plate, Rendon finally had a hit vs his old team, but the team as a whole left 8 LOBsters uneaten, being very disrespectful. At least Jack Mayfield had a pinch hit 2 run single.

Highlighted Recap

After the Angels failed to score with the bases loaded, Sandy gave up a run with the bases loaded. To be fair, it was a bunch of groundballs that found their way trough. At least Velazquez made a great stop to keep it from getting worse. 10 Nats in the 3rd.

Could have been worse

Meanwhile, the offense continued to not clean their plate,, leaving men on base constantly. 2 more runs would be scored for the Nats, again with balls that got through onto the grass. 3-0 Nats.

At least Trout got an OF assist…

The Angels would finally score with a pinch hit single down the line by Jack Mayfield in the 6th.

3-2 Nats

However, the Angels bullpen allowed another run, again with a bunch of singles. 4-2 Nats.

Neither team hit an extra base hit on the day, that is until the last out. With 2 outs in the 9th and 2 on down 2, Shohei Ohtani doubled both in!

THERE WE GO!

Then Anthony Rendon, who has his merch giveaway just 2 days before, drove in the winning run, walking off his former team!

WALK OFF WIN!

Squid had a play in the field that only Simba in his prime or Ozzie could have made. Special, very special team.

That was a great play. The reason why I do not mind to have Velasquez in the lineup. Angels defense could use a boost. Ozzie and Simba played long enough to make their at bats serviceable. But I don’t see the Angels being patient with Velasquez.

I was at the game and that diving play was very nice indeed. Don’t agree however that “only Simba or Ozzie could have made it…” Alot of short-stops make that play to be honest. For example, Alcides Escobar made an incredible play in the 4th inning I believe that robbed Rendon of an rbi play. That play by Escobar was probably harder to make than the diving play by Squid since it was hit much harder and faster and was grabbed cleanly.

All that said, I do see value in having Squid for his defense. This is a tough problem however because it could be argued that having a better hitting shortstop who is not as good defensively might provide a net gain overall. It is not clear-cut, but having a defense only ss is a strain on the lineup.

BTW, there is no way in God’s green created earth that Rengifo is anywhere close to wade in talent. Rengifo is flat out another Brandon Wood.

Interesting take from a game when all he did was pinch hit, draw a walk, and start the game ending rally.

Rengifo pinch hit for Velazquez which was a no brainier. And Soggy Joe really had no other alternatives on the bench other than backup catcher Wallach and the Aussie kid who just got called up from AA

And in that role, he did well. So the hot take that he isn’t ready isn’t supported by today’s game.

Yes, but if you use your Lylin Eyes you’d see that it was possibly the worst job of pinch hitting, walking, and sparking a game winning rally that anyone has ever done. Truly sub-MLB pinch hitting, walking, and sparking a game winning rally.

comparing Rengifo to a guy that was highly regarded as the best prospect in baseball is a HUGE stretch. We got Rengifo as a lottery ticket for Cron, nobody is expecting him to be an all-star caliber player, heck even a consistent starter

Bad comp, because Wood was a #1 prospect, whilst Rengifo has never been that

Just 15 min. ago arrived home, brought a lot in the house and ran over to my device and came here, I am ecstatic you guys got to watch today’s game and we had a bottom 9th inning walk off, send the tape to Matty to see what a walk off looks like. Barria is calmly going about business. Nice win for the team and for us. Go Halos! Go Team Go!

Robles played it perfectly, fielded it cleanly, got himself set without wasting time, made a strong throw on line….and our pitching DH outran it.

Yep. Shows you the importance of speed. Pretty much any runner of ours with the exception of Wade and maybe Trout would have been out.

This is one of the under-appreciated aspects of Shohei’s game and part of what makes him such an otherwordly talent.

It was on the line but the ball took a hop at the mound and velocity along with it. A short hopper nails Shohei.

Prediction. A “Conjunctivitis eye infection for Marsh….celebratory Gatorade had a rare bacterium that splashed in his eye while he wallowed in it.. difficult to treat, but they also think it’s the cause of the ongoing IBS Super Spreader Clubhouse Contagion.

Cudos to Soggy Joe for pulling the right strings today . Captain Jacks PH 2 run single and the lil fugitives clutch 9th inning walk made all the difference for the offense

Totally agree. Panther of the Game is our manager Joe Maddon !!!

The bunt of Marsh followed by pinch hitting of Mayfield for Wade was nothing short of brilliant.

Likewise the move to pinch hit Rengifo in the 9th! There is no victory without that PH walk in 9th!

I was listening on radio at the time, I don’t recall Terry and Langston saying it was a sacrifice or if Marsh was trying to get a hit. Down by 3, that is not typical to give up an out.

Reply to  FungoAle

You are correct that it is not typical, and at the time it happened I was yelling no. That is until I saw that Captain Jack was pinch-hitting. If Wade had hit it would have made zero sense (especially against a lefty). But because Mayfield was up it made sense. It was critical to get at least a run in that situation. So, even though as you point out we were down by three, I think Joe was playing the long game. He knew we had two innings left and the momentum of scoring there would be huge.

The other thing I realized at the time (which was brilliant on Maddon’s part) was that when Mayfield was announced he knew Martinez would make a pitching switch. This would cause a break in the game which would allow the “Rally Monkey” to make an appearance and the fans to get into the game. Indeed, the fans went crazy and that extra energy seemingly inspired the team.

that’s because our announcers suck. For many of them having played the game, they interpret today’s game so horribly, it’s tough to listen to.

Gubi went on a 20 minute rant when we played the Oriole’s about their catcher moving his glove down every pitch because the movement the pitcher had, when in reality every catcher does that for framing. Their takes are pretty bad

Wow. I thought we ate a ton of money DFA’ing Upton, but the Mets owe Cano $45million after DFAing him.

Yea, and the $700K (or whatever it is this year) for Cano wouldn’t be worth it. I like the team’s chemistry right now. We don’t need an over-the-hill star on this team.

Just analyzed the trajectory of the Monte Carlo thing for this game. When MNT K’d in the bottom of the 9th, it was 4-2 Nats and they had an 88.1% chance of winning. With Ohtani-san’s double to tie it, it immediately went to Angels with a 62% chance of winning. Quite the turn-around, and statistically, by definition, unlikely. With Rendon connecting on the high middle heater, and Ohtani’s speed, the Nats’s chance of winning collapsed to 0%.

Happy mother’s day to all mothers and muthuhs out there.
