LA Angels Tuesday News Crash: Kelsie Whitmore

Kelsie Whitmore played left field and batted ninth on Sunday for the Staten Island FerryHawks to become the first woman to start an Atlantic League game.

Taylor Ward is AL player of the week! Noah Syndergaard is expected to be back and pitching today. The Angels optioned Jose Suarez to triple-A. This coincided with roster contraction day. Shohei Ohtani considered his removal Sunday as precautionary. Joe Maddon was a little more circumspect. Andrew Wantz and Elvis Peguero were optioned yesterday because of roster contraction.

The Guardians just turned around and swept the Oakland Athletics.

Yusmeiro Petit just got a minor league deal with the Padres.

Darren O’Day caught a ball the catcher was trying to throw to second base. Oops!

The Tigers just designated Dustin Garneau for assignment but get a load of this: The Mets designated Robinson Cano for assignment. Packy Naughton got optioned down to Triple-A Memphis.

St. Louis reliever Ryan Helsley now owns the fastest pitch of the season at 103.1 MPH.

MLB basically has a secret strike zone they use to evaluate umpires.

It’s so true. If only we’d had Kike Hernandez to take that liner to the face instead of Warren all would be well.

Let’s hope that Adell can improve on his defense. He is still very young and he will develop. I hope that we see him back here in a few weeks after he has worked on some fundamentals.

Again, what was the guy doing all off-season after last years adventures in the outfield.

My friend who lost a tryout w/the Quakes after badly breaking his leg, dragged us all out there to hit him grounders and pop ups for weeks to try and get his rhythm and reads back. I’m sure Jo had more resources available than idiot hi skool buds to help him learn to read fly balls.

Mayers probably won’t be rolling down the highway until the Angels are sure that Bachman or some of the other 2021 draftees are ready for takin care of business.

Wonderful news, and a grand opportunity for Jo Adell to take and to be serious about learning. With the right attitude this will make him a much better player.

Perry also realizes we have to be ready for a long season. Bite the bullet now and get Jo the help he needs. He will need to be a big part of this team if we have eyes on the bigger prize this year. This is the correct move and I hope Jo takes this serious. We need that trio out there!

Hope he processes it in a healthy manner and they start him in LF every game they can. Playing center is a way easier read and that seems to be his biggest struggle along with poor routes.

So now parents are going to say that Mike Trout is promoting delinquency by giving selfies to kids ditching school and they have proof.

Gotta love it, I sure am glad cell phones, much less cell phone cameras weren’t around when I was a kid.

Man the trouble I would have been in. LOL

I thought you were making a disparaging joke about how certain people in our society will criticize Trout for taking a picture with a kid that ditched school and expressing your opinion that those people are ridiculous. I’m not sure it counts as sarcasm when it is true, but I think I got the humor.

Yes, I am sure beat up we didn’t draft the HS prospect that needed TJ surgery 8 years ago.

Also, he was traded (with lots of other guys) for Quintana. We had Quintana – so really, you missed out on him in 2018, right? Right?

(Career ERA is still over 4 in any case).

Not a bad idea as GA has the experience and is very relatable in this instance. I don’t know if GA would want to spend a lot of time in SLC though and this requires a commitment of a big block of time.

Last post this morning I promise. We will come away with 3 wins this series by staying within ourselves and not be razzled by the Green Monster. Fenway is brutal on those unfamiliar with it. Right-handed batters don’t try to hit the ball over that wall. Pitchers have to put that way away in their heads. I think right now I will be happy and I’ll know it if we leave Fenway winning 2 in Basten. We will win today 7-6.

Changing eye levels? What? Like that Picasso character?

Also: believe me, you want a guy to stay within himself. You don’t wanna have to clean up when a guy goes outside himself. Gruesome! Not pretty. Lotsa quicklime needed.

Pitchers do need to trust their stuff. If they can’t trust their slider or change, they should keep it to themselves, and fight off the urge to yell “You lying bitch of a curveball!…” Just as the catcher digs it out of the dirt. It gives away too much. So pitchers: if you can’t trust your stuff, keep it to yourself and try to not put on a dumb grin to cover up your turncoat pitches. Batters pick up on that stuff.

Finally: does anyone need a pitching coach? I’m available.

I believe we should have left Chi-Town with 3 wins. No way was Cease going to screw up as that kid has talent, a lot of talent. But we lost a game we should have won. Right now pitching is not our enemy, our pitching is fine. Our hitting has evolved into what the front office likes to see and that is wait for the HR. Part of “Small Ball” is making contact and the Angels struck out yesterday 15 times. When a pitcher is on top of his game he is close to the edge and the umpire was allowing for a big zone. Swinging away for the power as opposed to just making contact plays right into the pitchers hand. I’ll grant you that working the count was at best difficult because of the dope in blue, but fouling off pitches or grounding out soft to hard would have been better than 15 K’s.

With 2 strikes you must acknowledge that your approach must be different as a hitter and old fashion baseball must prevail with protecting the plate, hit anything close.

ScoopleDoople

Yes 15 Ks, imho, looks like some kind of “groupthink” was going on with the team’s approach. For what its worth I was someone of a strikeout king as a batter in my limited baseball career, so you’d have to take my analysis with a grain of salt.

Good Tuesday morning and having coffee this morning signals a new day with high expectations for the Angels.

Wow did that Cease pitch a great game, 7 innings, 1 hit, no runs, no BB, 11 K’s. 15 Strikeouts and 4 of them to Trout. (The Box Score will not change but, Trout was hosed all day by a horrible umpire.)

So, umpires are judged differently than the K box that we see for evaluations. MLB is OK with that, the Umpires Union is OK with it, but the fans and Players take issue with how the Umpires so far this season do not get it.
