Bird Fight On Cooler Bag Night!

Angels have wings, so they’re sort of like birds. The Orioles were in town on cooler bag night. Bird fight!

The Details

Reid Detmers got through the first inning with no ball going beyond the infield and no runs scoring. Cedric Mullins struck out on a bunt attempt. The Angels turned around and made sideout on a mere seven pitches.

A walk and a single put men at second and third for the Orioles in the second. Robinson Chirinos then beat the shift for a two run single. For the Angels, Taylor Ward hit a one out single but Matt Duffy erased that by hitting into an inning ending double play. 2-0 Orioles.

The Orioles did nothing in the third. Stassi stuck out, Jo Adell singled, and Andrew Velazquez hit into a double play to end the inning.

Baltimore did nothing in the fourth inning, but neither did the Angels, who struck out in order.

Robinson Chirinos was having a hell of a game at this point. He doubled and advanced to third on a Kelvin Gutierrez ground out. Anthony Rendon got him out on a fielder’s choice at home plate. This Rendon Guy might end up working out after all.

Trey Mancini singled, Ryan Mountcastle singled, and Anthony Santander singled thereby making it 3-0 Orioles. Austin Hayes single to load up the bases. Ramon Urias grounded out to score Ryan Mountcastle. (4-0 Orioles). Robinson Chirinos also got an RBI groundout. (5-0 Orioles). Max Stassi singled and advanced to second on a fielding error by Anthony Santander. Jo Adell and Anthony Velazquez both made out but between them they scored Stassi to make it 5-1 Orioles.

Jorge Mateo singled. He stole second and advanced to third on a throwing error by Max Stassi. Mateo did not score.

Trout walked. Anthony Rendon then hit a two run homer to make it 5-3 Orioles. With one out, Matt Duffy singled. Pinch hitter Walsh grounded out to send Duffy to third whereupon Max Stassi popped out to end the inning.

Anthony Santander grounded out. Austin Hayes struck out. Ramon Urias Grounded out. Jo Adell then struck out. Andrew Velazquez singled on a ground ball to third. He seems to be hitting above his grade for the time being.

Now if either Ohtani or Trout can hit a homer the game is tied. If Ohtani can reach safely and Trout hits a homer the Angels have a lead. What happened? Shohei Ohtani grounded into a double play to end the inning. Oops!

The Orioles went three up, three down for the top of the ninth. Mike Trout then singled and went to second on a passed ball. Robinson Chirinos is having a less good game all of a sudden. Anthony Rendon and Taylor Ward made two quick outs to make sure things got interesting. What will pinch hitter Brandon Marsh do? Strike out, that’s what. Game over. Orioles win 5-3.

nobody likes these, nobody takes your point, everyone thinks you’re a crackpot. Other than that, no problem.

the Rays just no-hit the Chowds but wait! It’s still 0-0. Tampa has two hits. According to Gameday it’s easy to see why. What a huge strike zone! When pitches out of the zone get called strikes you have to start swinging at them.

I was hoping to wake up today and learn that the Angels released Archie Bradley, but no such luck

I’ll give you a rec……..even though it don’t mean a damm thing, nor should it in 2022.
Will we all be able to move on once every player from that 2017 World Series team isn’t there any more? Jose Altuve, Justin Verlander, Lance McCullers Jr, Alex Bregman, and Yuli Gurriel is all that’s left, even the manager and GM were both fired ( AJ Hinch and Jeff Luhnow), TWO YEARS AGO BEFORE THE PANDEMIC.
I’ve moved on CTPG, mainly because I’m not a Dodger or Yankee fan. This is really more about resentment against a more successful team than anything.

I said not to sleep on this kid. He was a stud at Long Beach State, and got to train with the team when they were at Blair

I will miss the game with tonight’s beginning so I will post this now. Thor will win the game. Thor will pitch into the 7th inning giving up 1 run while striking out 7. We will win the game 7-2. HRs tonight by Trouty and Marsh. BET THE FARM!

I too expect a strong bounce back. The Orioles complete, played hard against the Yankees last week. No shame last night, Detmers has the stuff and make-up to stick in this rotation, I’m a fan.

Detmers just reminds me of Sandoval last year. Has the stuff, but now has to learn how to use it a the major legue level. He’s going to be good, he just needs time and reps with big league hitters.

Not sure I see the similarities. Detmers reminds me of Mike Holtz . Sandy reminds me of Chuck Finley except with a change up instead of fork ball

I didn’t mean same stuff. I meant having quality stuff, but having to fine tune the craft at the MLB level instead of AAA. He’s going to take some lumps, but it’s amazing to see the change in pitcher Sandoval has/is becoming. I see Detmers a year away from that too

Yeah. Zimmerman is damned good. It’s OK to lose one, but win the next two. As long as we win series, it’s all good.

I don’t usually like it when you predict games Grandpa. Of course you always pick the Angels, so I guess it is wrong to say you”pick” the game. That said, I do agree with you about tonight. Not on the score necessarily, but I do think the Angels will win by a couple runs at least, maybe a few.

Your HR picks are good ones as well.

After we took two of three in Houston, I did not expect that we would lose again. Back to the drawing board.

I’m too GA to look up the data, but it always seems that the Orioles give us problems…

If you are referring to 1979 then, yes The Bards give us problems. But generally speaking during the Angelos era I think we’ve done pretty good against them. Certainly nothing like the problems we get from Oakland, Houston & Tampa.

Last 5 years we have been pretty good. But for most of the 80’s they KILLED us.

Mostly in the Earl Weaver years they dominated us. We had a hard time against them both at home and in Baltimore.

It started to turn in the 2000’s.

Yep whether it was Fregosi/Mauch/MacNamara/Mauch vs. Weaver/Altobelli/Weaver/Ripken Sr, we never had a winning record even when we had the superior team.
1979 3-9
1980 2-10
1981 6-6
1982 5-7
1983 5-7
1984 4-8
1985 5-7
1986 6-6
1987 3-9

Ironically The Orioles were terrible in 1987 and still crushed us. Victor’s dad, Cookie was the only manager to have a winning record in the eighties of 7-5 against the Orioles in 1988.

After just 14 games Jo Adell already with 21 strikeouts and Ohtani with 20 strikeouts at the plate. That really needs to be tightened up..

Honest question…Are these Maddon lineups killing the rhythm for the offense? Cuz Walsh looks unhappy on the pine and out of sorts at the Plate lately and our current RBI machine Marsh Is pinch hitting. Dont get it…feel like its gonna be an up and down year for the offense if he keeps getting cute like this. Oh And Fletch new contract can’t hit now…Stassi new contract can’t hit now…smdh.

Walsh had already entered the game in the 7th for Mayfield. Joe elected to keep Duffy in the game and shift him to 2B. This turned out to be the right call since Duffy got a hit just prior to Walsh PH at bat. Marsh was PH for Duffy in the ninth while Walsh was on deck. Not sure putting the rookie (almost rookie) up in that situation (vs letting the veteran Duffy Hit) was the right call but I don’t know if it really matters if the umpire was requiring the batter to use a ladder to access the top of his strike zone.

Fletch is definitely a mess right now he went 0-5 at AAA last night with a strike out. At least he didn’t try his bloop hit to shallow right field that everyone easily defends now. Maybe last year’s extension is weighing on him?

I’m not sure I understand your statements about the secret policeman though. The secret about Max Stassi is even though his offense is a little down this year (Yet His 2022 OPS (.766) is still higher than his career mark (.694)) his defense is still stellar and I think the team considers his offense a bonus. I thought the contract extension he signed was very reasonable by both parties. Provided The Samurai doesn’t roll over this season and continues on as a viable sub to give the Secret Policeman sufficient rest. Right now catching this is one of our better positions in the organization.
