Angels pull off Matinee Win against the Marlins

Angels 4 Marlins 3

Patrick Sandoval gave Angels fans much to be excited about in the 1st inning. Sandoval needed only 11 pitches to strike out the side – just 2 balls short of an immaculate inning. In fact, after a pair of balls to the lead off hitter Soler, Sandoval threw 8 straight strikes to finish off the inning.

Queue the 2nd inning and Sandoval was a different pitcher. He managed to escape damage, despite walking the bases loaded.

Overall, Sandoval looked good (especially if you ignore some command issues in the 2nd inning). He did only make it through 4 innings thanks to his 71 pitches. Sandoval didn’t allow an earned run and struck out 6. The Angels were tagged with an unearned run during his performance thanks to Jo Adell allowing a routine-ish single to turn into an RBI “triple”.

Thankfully, the Angels managed to tie it up after a lead off walk by Mike Trout in the 4th followed a few batters later by a Jack Mayfield triple (legit triple – not 2 base error).

Jesus Luzardo out-dueled Sandoval, throwing 76 pitches and logging a huge 12 strikeouts over 5 innings of work.

Tony two bags knocked a 2-run homer in the 6th (Trout was on with another walk), putting the Angels up for goods? Nope. Spoiler alert, the Marlins tied it up when Jazz Chisholm Jr. hit a 2-run wall scrapper off Mike Mayers in the 7th. Perry Minasian re-tooled the bullpen. Sort of. I mean, Mayers is still there and pitching in a late and close game.

Raisel Iglesias pitched in a non save situation last night, so why not have him pitch the top of the 9th in a tie game? Iglesias shut it down and Joe Maddon turned out to be a genius.

Speed wins this one. Tyler Wade came in to pinch run, stole 2nd, advanced to 3rd on a wild pitch and scored on an infield ground ball.

When can we get rid of this alternating Bullpen A and Bullpen B bullshit?. Only Churches can pitch on back to back days now?

Loup only makes a total of 7 pitches & Tepera a total of only 14 pitches on Monday and then they’re not available on back to backs right before an off day?

If we have to rely on Halloween, Chili cheese & Ben Weber 2.0 in save/hold situations every other day we’re screwed.

Agree. Back to back days should not be an overly big concern, especially early in the season. Since Loup has been limited to one inning I don’t see it as an issue. Tepera on the other hand has gone two so you need to watch him a little bit more carefully if the plan is to use him for longer stints than just three outs.

In general I agree with you, but what I will say is this; since it is clear that our starters will not typically be going over 5 innings our pen will be racking up alot of innings. This means that the workload will have to be managed carefully over the course of a season. We need to avoid having all those guys run out of gas by July or August (or even earlier), however, as I said above early on it should be less of an issue.

If Buttrey is able to come on board and provide reinforcements then that will certainly help alot, (fingers crossed) being perhaps an alternate 8th inning option to Tepera ? It will also be important to have other guys step up as I am not sure how good I feel about Oliver Ortega pitching in tie games or with a one run lead over the course of the full season. Back in the winter I also stated that I like the idea of using Iggy for 4 or 5 out saves (in crucial situations) in April or perhaps the very begining of May, but then cutting down to one inning stints after that. Following that same logic, I don’t have an issue with using the “A” team more aggressively early on, as long as Perry has a plan for reinforcements and rest in the coming weeks and months.

Obviously with 70 to 80 pitch count limits the shortened spring has limited starter outings so far this season. I’m hoping that we can anticipate longer durations out of starters as the season progresses but with encouraging signs from the starting staff and an unanticipated potential lack of offense going forward, we maybe in store for ALOT of close ball games. Therefore a strong and deep bullpen will be a must. I’m hoping that the Angels will be able to develop bullpen fixtures for spots 6 thru 10 instead of the hope and pray retreads we’ve seen to date.

You’re right on about Buttrey. If he as well us others ( potentially even from the 2021 Magnificent 19 Draft pool) can emerge in those lower bullpen spots, this team could really go places. now about that team defense….. :wpds_eek:

I hate to ask, but how does:

HOU, TBR, NYY, TOR, CWS, CLE total 3? (and that’s just the AL)

Yeah, not sure when exactly she made that statement, and it is possible that a couple of teams that are 3-2 had not recorded their most recent wins yet. But I count 13 teams total in the Majors that have a better winning percentage than we do…

Is the Cowboy hat only for Rendon when he hits a homer or does anyone on the bench get to where it if they hit it out? Maybe Kind of like last years’s Blue Jays Blazer?

Man, Tyler Wade is fast! Great pinch running use of him, he absolutely forced the issue on the bases in the 9th. Overall great game. Also, Jesus Luzardo is insane, glad he’s out of the division.

Wade has been at the center of two atrocious calls and reviews now. He was 100% safe at home on Sunday and 100% out today.

I’d dismiss it as karmic balancing out, but that’s 2 horrible calls that stood under review. Not good MLB.

Had a great time at the game with Rahul. The Angels actually comped some of the Angels sites some tickets. We were able to meet some of the Angels digital media folks and some writers from other sites. It was cool.

Never never NEVER use that word when speaking of ANY of the 29 other MLB teams. Don’t you read the threads here? The ONLY way Dodgers, Red Sox, Yankees, A’s, Rangers, et. al win is by CHEATING the hallowed saintly Angels out of their deserved place in history! 😎

Meh. Heaney will give a team a couple competent starts, but will ultimately falter. How many times did we watch him put up similar numbers only to implode in the coming innings?

Disagree. Alex was much smoother in her delivery. She seemed comfortable in her own skin. Not only that, but you got the feeling she was really having fun doing her job.

I don’t get that feeling from Erica.

Patrick or Matty V.? I think I prefer Matty V’s PxP calling. But I also seem to be in the minority here as I also like Patrick. It is tough to learn on the job in a big market where Vinnie, Dick, Chick and other greats have plied their trade. If you were to listen to other markets announcers, you would love Patrick.

As for Erica and Bobby V. I just turn it off. Kent French and GA along with Salmon. I enjoyed. 2 of our top past stars and French’s knowledge of the game and the teams past.

I do not think Erica is awful and Alex she is not, but pre game and after game interviews along with in game news or facts is what she should be doing.

I do not miss Mota at all and I won’t miss Bobby V. when gone.

In general I do not care for Bally Sports or their graphics.

It’s just their personalities, dude.

You’re not gonna find anyone else that matches Alex’s energy level. She’s one of a kind.

But they both do the job well and get the information to the viewer they need to.

Okay my chance to be a contrarian.

I was never a fan of Alex. I know a lot of folks around here found her ‘hot’ and many liked the bubbly thing.

I just don’t think she was any good at her job. She was a social media type broadcaster – where image was more important than substance. Her schtik was to post a bunch of pictures of giggling and big smiles at the Stadium – who cares what actually was being said or opined.

I actually like Erica way better. I think she is more knowledgeable and less dependent on her looks.

It’s funny, I was talking to Erica and she pretty much said the same thing. You’re kind of a bag of sad rocks and she wishes we’d get rid of you and bring back Goose Gaskin. I told her to chill out cause the season is young yet.

She grumbled something about excuses and legitimacy and took a bight of her sauerkraut sandwich.

Patrick O’Neal just told me we can all eat a bag of dicks and then downed an entire 40oz King Cobra.

You might be right about the knowledge part. But let’s face it, that job is alot about attitude and appearance and having a certain “energy” for lack of a better term. So on that level I prefer Alex. But it is also possible that over the course of the season that Erica will grow on me.
