Angels re-sign Raisel Iglesias

Ken Rosenthal has reported that Raisel Iglesias has re-signed with the Angels for 4 years. This is huge for the team, as D-Cell has been one of the best and reliable closers in recent years and was one of the bright spots last year.

At 4/58, the deal is at 14.5M per year. A much lower AAV than the QO. Since the Angels kept their own player, they do not receive a draft pick. They don’t lose one either, besides the one already lost when Thor was signed.

We will keep you updated with further updates.

Yep………..I wuz wight. Relievers are a hell of a lot cheaper than Gerritt Cole and Max Scherzer cost. $7M a yr for two years to the guy above. Mark Melencon formerly of the San Diego Padres/2021 MLB saves leader. Arte you sneaky dog you!!
No wonder you were OK with resigning Raisel……..

Every single baseball fan in the world understands that SP is more expensive than RP. WTF are you talking about?

The theory is ol’Cheap n Evil didn’t sign any of the top 4 starters on purpose because he’s cheap and evil.

Instead he engages in these elaborate dramas where it looks like he’s trying to sign these guys so that the fans stay off his case but he is really trying NOT to sign these guys.

He does this because he’s engaged in an even bigger theater production where he signs Mike Trout, Upton, Rendon etc to huge contracts so it looks like he wants to win, but avoids signing pitching on purpose because he doesn’t really want to actually win.

Now, some of the geniuses on HH/CtPG were getting wise to his plan to make some money, but not nearly as much money as winning would bring in, so in order to throw them off his scent but still enjoy the thrill of not signing pitchers, he set about buying the stadium and beginning the process of eventually building a new one himself.

This year’s twist is he signs inexpensive bullpen arms so he can look like he’s trying, while desperately avoiding signing the starters he was trying to sign. He is only 72.6% in instead of ALL IN and also his grit is fine and dusty so he doesn’t get it done the way a body building eagle would.

It’s all to serve his ego. Lay the blame squarely at his feet. As long as he draws 2.3 million fans and builds some condos he is apparently happy. Fight the power. Billboards. President of Baseball Ops. Blah blah blah.

Here, let me help you out with this. The Angels FO calls Boras Corp about an FA pitcher or SS or what ever. They talk about that guy some. Then Boras says “Hey, you know, I’ve got a guy who doesn’t play any of the positions you need but is an MVP award winner and World Champion who looks great in red and only wants the 200M he deserves for his years of brave service. What do you think of Kris Bryant? Heh? Hehhhh?”

Angels FO… “Oh yeah, Kris, he’s great too. Yah. Great player. Now about that relief pitcher….”

To Boras, and thus Heyman, this equals “INTEREST”.

The Angels have nowhere to play Bryant. Not LF. Not 3B. Not 1B and not DH. This is most likely to drag more money out of the Mariners, Padres or Phillies since I have no idea why the Mets, Astros or Angels would want him and the Rockies just let Story walk because he’ll be expensive and they are rebuilding.

Boras sees teams as interested in the way a stalker sees the hot check out girl at Target as interested. Don’t believe any rumor about Boras clients until you see something like “serious negotiations” printed…. something an FO has to deny even if it gets them on his bad side.

no, it’s reasonable in this market but while we’re excited about the signings so far (excluding Lorenzon) there must be a limit to what Arte will allow and I think if we spend $15mil on a pitcher and another $9-10mil on a shortstop we’d end up with more overall value. Maybe. I don’t know. I’m jus a fan, spouting off.

I’m with you in that I thought Stroman would get a little more, like 24M a year. Unlike you, I doubt PTP wanted to pay that. I hope he didn’t. And yes, as is the case with every fucking team in the MLB, the owner almost certainly had some say in a 71 million dollar contract decision. Do you honestly think there’s an FO out there just putting contracts like that in front of an owner and he just signs it? “Well herr dee derr Andrew Freidman. You said he good so here’s that 70 million bucks you asked for…”

My guess, and my hope, is that after the last round of numbers on Stroman offers came through Arte n the FO did a quick “here’s all the things we want/need. Here’s a list of players we can get with a combined 21M. Or we can have Stroman’s 130-50 solid innings. What do we want to do?” and they passed on ol’Stroman. Since he wound up with the Cubs I’d imagine a couple teams did that.

The good news is that, if we were in on Stroman to that point, we most likely still have a chunk of money to spend, maybe not 20M but more than 4 or 5 million.

Fansince1971

Yeah – I’m disappointed but I can get over it. Starting pitching is overrated anyway. Get a couple more good relief arms after the lockout is over and I’ll be fine with it. If leads can be held 6th inning and beyond this team has a chance.

Well, having watched multiple winning teams struggle to win a WS or make the post season, I’d say that both are pretty important, but if you have neither, you should try to improve both.

And if you’re on CtPG you demand both be raised to the level of the Dodgers right away and that all prospects blossom and injuries never happen.

If PTP can sign a guy like Kwang Hyun Kim, Tyler Anderson or Michael Pineda it will free him up to package Suarez, Barria type guys with Adell and trade for a guy like Gray. Add a guy like Blake Parker or Alex Colome to the pen… is good. Starting rotation…

Ohtani
Syndergaard
Sandoval
Gray
Lorenzen
Anderson/Kim/Pineda

You can win a lot of games with that.

Also, who here thinks GMs are not going to be talking to each other about trade ideas while the owners are off drinking rum punch and decrying greed? Day 1 of the new CBA is gonna blow up…. or rather day 3 as the GMs needed two days to suddenly put together the trades they weren’t working on at all during the lockout.

So: we have no SS, no backup catcher, but worse: 3 SP who can reliably give us Quality Starts. We need 4 QS guys, at minimum.

Let’s never forget: we have Junk, too.

And: what’s the story on Story? Will the Ms get him? Looks like it.

I like Josh Harrison at 2nd, Fletch at SS if we don’t nab Story.

I can’t effing stand Correa. To me, all those Trash-Holes are tainted forever. I want to go on hating him, wherever he ends up (looks like he won’t sign until lockout is over). If he comes here, I’ll take quite awhile before I’m able to rearrange neural pathways to the point of, “C’mon Carlos! Lousy knock here, baby!”

I’d trade the future to win in the next two years, especially if that’s a top flight pitcher. Honestly, it’s the pussyfooting with going all in or tanking and rebuilding that I think has killed us these last years. I mean, what are we going to do, have a few losing seasons after the dust settles (hopefully with some fun in the playoffs)? We’ve had 6 of those already in the last 6 years.

I don’t think the Cubs know what they are doing.

They give all indications of going into tank mode, then they sign an expensive frontline starter. Wha?

I mean, why get rid of Rizzo, and Bryant and Baez and Schwarber if you are not tanking? If tanking is your plan, then by all means, tank! But don’t go half assed with your tank, which is what they are doing by signing Stroman.

I think that our OF should be set with Marsh in CF, Trouty in RF, and Adell in LF and Upton as needed. At this point it would be unwise to off Marsh as he has 4 of the 5 tools needed. Trout can field first when Walsh sits too with Adell moving to RF and JUp to LF. Besides both Marsh and Adell are still less money than someone they would be traded for. As far as Castillo trade, Canning and Detmers and Barria are expendable.

TheOrangeCurtain

Trout is never ever going to play 1B. If anything, I could see them making Upton play 1B when spelling Walsh for a day. Upton is a terrible defender, you don’t ever put him in the OF over Trout…

there were only 20 pitchers in all baseball last season to throw 180 innings or more. Only 4 who threw 200 or more. Castillo, who’s been mentioned in trade talks, was one of them in the 180-199 range. He also had the worst whip of any of those 20.

Oh yeah, Castillo had a 1.36 WHIP last year. That’s… average. Probably got a longer leash to throw more innings simply because he was on a non-contending Reds team. Don’t think that’s someone you have to give up a lot in return for a trade.

I already did
several times over and over and over. Mine was that we needed two frontline SP’s to add to Ohtani (no I’m not cool with guy who has a bad injury history and to me he’s nothing more than a way more expensive Tim Lincecum). DeSclafani already resigned and we’re just sitting on hands watching other teams better themselves this week. I figured we would have to get one through trade and one by FA. So Arte couldn’t outbid for Steven Matz? How about our former GM (Billy Eppler just beat us to the punch and snagged the best pitcher in FA….a guy who I spent the last 4 yrs going back to Halos Heaven bashing and trashing).
