LA Angels Monday News Crash:

I think this has been linked, but it’s very interesting. Shohei Ohtani declined a “People’s Honor Award” from his native Japan because he plans to be even better in the future.

The Angels have discussed a trade for Luis Castillo with the Reds, but a deal remains elusive as of the time of this writing.

Noah Syndergaard weighed in on the Carlos Correa diss of Derek Jeter’s defensive skills. It’s a little ambiguous whether Thor thinks Jeter deserved his gold gloves, whether he just feels ball players shouldn’t be showing each other up on talk shows, or whether he just doesn’t like Carlos Correa.

Meanwhile, in the spirit of Thanksgiving, Tyler Wade thanked New York for his nine years in their system.

Fangraphs presented a relatively detailed view of what the Aaron Loup signing means for the Angels.

The Angels are hiring Phil Nevin as their third base coach.

The Angels picked up Trey Cabbage over the holiday. He’s an outfielder and corner infielder who has made it as high as AA.

Non-Angels Links

Trey Mancini and Buster Posey won MLBs Comeback Player of the Year awards. Posey really went out on a high note.

If you’ve ever wondered what Max Scherzer would look like with a Thanksgiving turkey for a head … well … look no further.

The Giants signed Anthony DeSclafani for three more years and $36 Million.

Meanwhile, the Rays signed Wander Franco to an eleven year extension and the Twins signed Byron Buxton to a seven year extension.

The Reds signed Michael Wacha to a one year deal worth $7 Million.

Corey Kluber signed with the Rays for one year at $8 Million plus incentives.

Marcus Semien signed with the Texas Rangers yesterday. Kole Calhoun also has a deal with the Rangers.

The Mets signed a bunch of position players, but now they are reportedly interested in pitching. Marcus Stroman thinks the Mets are looking at other pitchers instead of him, but says he will dominate wherever he ends up.

We are in the last three days before the lock out. Spend them well, Perry.

Here are some front office positions with the Seattle Mariners.

Question of “How can the owners make a little more money by playing extra playoff games”. Pay elevated ticket prices, buy merchandise because your team made the playoffs. Generate fan interest.

Wow. A few other kids get a couple of the toys we wanted and this place turns into a sad sack of shit really fast. It’s November 29th. Most of you listed a host of reasons why you DON’T want the pitchers who signed today. Some of you are shittin mad about losing Alex Cobb… the same people who were mad about having Alex Cobb. I can tell a lot of you are frustrated because, even though you said you didn’t want Max, you wanted Max, and now you’re all puffy and sad because other kid got Max.

And then, most offensive of all! other players have been signed by the Angels, and they aren’t Max or Stroman! Holy F***! This is fan abuse! I hope none of you old men shattered a hip throwing yourself to the ground kicking off your tantrum. I get it, what kind of sadist GM signs depth pieces while the other kids get Gaussman? I’m loving the declarations that next season’s team will be worse than this season’s team. What are we, a bunch of 14 year old girls publicly declaring we are going to kill ourselves because a concert was sold out?

You all remind me of a kid I saw once crying in the parking lot of a Chucky Cheeses cause the giant mouse went and high fived the kid whose birthday it was instead of him. Maybe we’ll get Stroman. Maybe we’ll trade for someone. Maybe Lorenzen will win the Cy Young. Maybe we’ll sign a beefy bullpen. Maybe the players we want are looking at CtPG right now and are thinking “F*** these people, I’m signing with the Tigers.” It could happen, all of the players I want (accept Loup) all have the power to sign elsewhere. I have to be ready for that. But Jesus Christ people, I was just on the Yankees page, how is it we are managing to come of like more entitled wankers than they are?

I feel like we’ve earned the right to be sad and pissed about watching the exact same story as the last several offseasons. We’re only able to sign bounce back candidates, that inevitably fail, to one year contracts. Now we’re watching it again in real time and we should be optimistic?

I’m sure you know the word “fan” is short for fanatic. Being reasonable and on an even keel would make us less insanee when we
win the championship again

gitchogritchoffmypettis
Legend

Ah yes, the ol fan = fanatic so this shit’s not stupid and annoying. I’m not saying people shouldn’t care about this stuff or be disappointed if we don’t get what we all want. Of course that’ll happen, it’s natural. I’m just saying there’s a point past which it gets pretty ridiculous. Especially if we’re gonna lose our cool over something that’s a long way from a finished situation, or go to pieces because some guys made decisions that aren’t the decisions we wanted them to make as far as the teams they sign with.

Or did we even want them to sign with us? Didn’t seem like it a few days ago. It’s just lame as f*** when we put on our big adult pants and demand all kinds of intelligence and performance and grit from our team one day and then drop those same pants and throw a hissy fit because we’re fanatics and we’ve been hurt before and it’s been so long and and and we deserve stuff so now 2022 is a wash and we shouldn’t even watch and so on…. these are grown men, and some grown women, doing this. Being a fanatic, even a disappointed fanatic, isn’t the same as acting like a bitch tool. Hyperventilating and getting angry about our FO not controlling every situation, even situations we didn’t even care about Friday, because we want some something and we wanted it for a long time isn’t being a fan, it’s being an entitled twat, and it’s acting the same as the entitled twats we all swear we dislike in other fan bases.

But hey, everyone’s got the right to handle themselves how they want. Grown men can act like bitches, and I’ll say “wow, what a bitch.” and life will go on. But there used to be some f***ing standards in this fanbase, and scrolling through these posts I’d say they’re pretty much gone.

For a guy who is annoyed by grown men acting like bitches, you certainly are a broken record shoehorning unprompted Arte takes and bitching about the same thing instead of…walking away? Going somewhere else?

Maybe a sports blog isn’t somewhere a grown man should hang out if he is triggered by different opinions.

Reply to  ryanfea

Exactly. Our frustration is built on year after year of false promises of “fixing the pitching” and being sold on hope. Let’s just be honest, Arte does not pay for quality pitching. He just doesn’t. The days of Bartolo Colon are long gone.

The true tragedy of being an Angels fan is that we are continually close but oh so far. Having Trout and Ohtani and other key pieces like a Fletcher etc are just an elaborate form of fan torture. The song may be gone but the Angels fans are still singing that same refrain.

So yes, we do have a right to be sad and even angry. This is not Yankees or Dodgers entitlement. We are stuck in the middle. Being a truly losing team is in many ways better when high draft picks are accumulated and used to stock the farm system.

Alas, we Angels fans are left to dream of potential post-season glory while the committed ownership of other franchises actually decides to pay the price of winning.

If not, definitely McHugh. I tried so hard to shoehorn him into my Perry piece but couldn’t.

Arte is not going to see 4 or 31/2 or even 3 million fans show up. No pitching means a losing record once again. Arte has never brought a World Series team to his team’s fans.
Watching the FA’s sign elsewhere is bad, but signing in our division is not OK either.

A trade with the Padres would have worked out well for us, Frazier to second and Fletch to short.

We have a need for Stroman and our closer back, just do it damn it.

Recap so far. Thor who did not pitch but a handful of innings is signed but to a confident one year deal. Loup (Who historically is not a closer) is signed. A bunch of names for back up in the minors that no has heard of. I believe that the bar will not be raised to must more.

I’ll hate on the state of this State all day but let’s have some context here:

Oakland was never going to sign anybody. SD’s roster and budget are both pretty full.

SF resigned DeSclafani and are bringing in the Cobbler after making a serious run at Gausman.

Dodgers are eerily quite but also still the deepest roster in MLB. They will sign someone.

Angels brought in Thor early. That’s a pretty big name. We definitely need more.

I did some pocket math on the other site and the take home difference between us and playing in Texas is a little less than 7%. Keep in mind I’m no CPA.

Assuming a player is smart and keeps AZ or TX as their residence, they’ll pay 13.3% state income tax on the 81 games at home, 9 in Oakland, and 3 in LA every year. That’s 57% of the games.

Keep in mind that if they sign with the Rangers or Mariners or another state with no income tax, they still get taxed on the games they play here in Anaheim and in Oakland. So Seager will pay CA taxes on about 18 games per year.

So while I hate the CA tax system for small businesses and the middle class, for the top of the free agent market they’re really debating state income tax on about 60-70 games per year. Something that could easily be negated with some endorsements.

There are personal factors as well but if I’m going to be rich, I would much rather be rich at a beach with great weather than in Dallas or NY. Others would differ.

I think payroll is going up. Supposedly we had an offer for Max and just couldn’t compete $$ wise with that insane offer. If our offer was between 30-35 a year, that tells me the pockets are open. I’d rather have Iglesias and Stroman than Max for the same amount.

This is what I have been hoping the plan is. Stroman + Raisel makes us better than Scherzer by itself. I’m really hoping Perry is able to pull that off. We would just need a backup catcher and try to trade for a decent SS. But adding Stroman + Raisel will make me feel good about our chances to compete next year for the first time in a long time.

I’d love a trade for Farmer and Gray from Cincy. Fill out SS and the rotation in one swoop, pretty inexpensively payroll wise, then spend a little on whichever hole is created in the trade.

I, and if I remember right you, should be OK with what has happened thus far. Rather than pull an Arte/Billy winter like the past couple years PTP is offering top of the market starters contracts that get traction AND signing up other pitchers as he works so we don’t get left holding a bag full of Cueto in February. Will I be bummed if Stroman n Raisel signs with WTF knows? Sure. But I’ll be more bummed if we’ve signed nothing at that point.

Thus far I haven’t seen anything to make me think that signing Thor, Lorenzen or Loup has prevented the FO from going after anyone I want. I just hope some of the guys I want want us.

Not sure about everyone but even though Perry has not made a deal today, this perceived deadline has been an adrenaline rush. Hoping MLB can set a FA signing deadline ahead of the Winter Meetings in the future. This is like the NBA where the majority of the guys come off the board in 72 hrs.
