Welcome to the sixth installment of the If I were Perry Minasian series, where CtPG writers detail the transactions they would make for their desired Angels offseason.
Let’s make this simple. I would bring back Victor Rojas and Alex Curry.
Oh… ON the field, okay, got it… We got $45 Million to spend…
•Dump Gosselin, dump Junior Guerra, that is a no-brainer, but it will be more controversial when I suggest we also dump Mike Meyer and Max Stassi, they have both peaked – save about $12 million.
So we got $57 Million to spend, let’s do it…
•Raisel Iglesias – 3 years, $42 million ($14 Million in 2022)
•Marcus Stroman – 5 years, $120 million ($24 Million in 2022)
•Carlos Rodon – 5 years, $90 Million ($18 million in 2022)
•Jeff Mathis – 1 year, $1 Million (said in a Dr. Evil laugh).
Luis Rengifo is at Shortstop, some scrub and a half is catching behind pitcher-handling, no-bat Mathis. The bullpen is all spring training invites that nobody even knows is pitching at this time of the year. The rotation is Ohtani, Stroman, Rodon, Sandoval, Suarez and the Salt Lake Express to make it a six-man rotation. Justin Upton gets a shit-ton of ABs as a pinch hitter for Mathis in the sixth inning or later when needed.
Oh and hire Mike Napoli in a coaching role ASAP so we reunited Mathis and Napster without Mike Scioscia getting in the middle of the ultimate Halo bromance for once.
I respect the boldness of Mayers/Stassi, but I think that Stassi has positive trade value, so you night as well trade him for the best offer even if it’s prospects.
We can still get Rodon or Stroman by the way! (and Mathis too)
Simple and to the point. Love ya rev
Edit: I want to believe Meyers and stassi are the answer but I think advanced scouting are limiting their potential so it’s a controversial but good call.. Mathis and Napoli reunion to bring back that winning culture. Who knows Napoli might teach him how to hit like he did that one playoff series where we thought he might live up to his potential
Oh yes, bring both Victor and Alex back, that’s the ticket.
Angels sign Aaron Loup for 2 years $17m. I like it. Anyone still think the budget is $180m?
Now go sign Raisel and go get Stroman and I’ll start getting excited!
No. But how high it can go, who knows? It is clear enough that the Angels need a few more pieces to fill out the roster even with Thor and Loup. At least 30 million in AAV (or 10 over the presumed threshold) for even the “economy route,” as much as 60 mil or,likely, more if one were splurging (not counting the lengths of contracts). I don’t think we are going the latter route. The former route makes me uncomfortable, as there are too many unknowns and the FO/player development/coaching staff have not shown much ability over past decade to get value out of risky projects
Rev, coming inside with the wipeout curveball of bringing back Jeff “Premium” Mathis! Well, he has taken his BA to the lofty height of .194 from the .187 he had as an Angel.
I’m confident just playing for Maddon will raise his average to at least .192
🤔 , you may be on to something there.
Tyler Wade from Yankees now an Angel. Wong DFA’d. Wade apparently is a bench piece. No announcement as to who goes back to the Yanks. Some cash involved.
Mathis would be epic and I like the pitching plan but Rengifo at SS isnt going to get it done
I like this. We won’t have to worry about anybody stealing first base, with Premium on the job.

😂 That clip never gets old. The look on Mathis face and the surprise of Vin Scully is classic.
Napoli/Mathis 2022…. setting Tempe on fire together at last! Bring your own paternity test 2023 will be held at the same motel next March ladies. Just announced, coming to Florida beach towns near you the weekend after the season ends! Free temporary tribal tattoos and chicken wings for the kids of single mothers!
I like this plan. It will answer a question for us. Is starting pitching really the end all be all? Sure we keep Raisel too, and that’s great (though I bet he gets at least 14M a year) but we had him last year. If we make these moves and win a lot more games then viola! We see that starters are more key than any other key and hopefully act accordingly.
It surprises me how many folks are willing to give Rengifo a shot at SS. I’m not against it as part of a plan, I just thought he’d become “the worst evah” around here, mostly because his number one failure is not being Stefanic.
wow Bullpen!!! wow more bullpen!!! dammitt even more bullpen!!! Iwontmorbullpen!!!
Other than the 1990 Cincinnati Reds and us in 2002 how many teams have won it all with just a bull pen? Even that 1990 “Nasty Boys” pen still had Jose Rijo and Tom Browning as their two big dog SP’s……More Bull Pen PLZ!!!!
💪
Is this supposed to be a comment on a different IIWPM? He brought in one pen arm we already had and two starters….
Those last Royals post season teams were pretty bullpen heavy too. So were the 70s Reds… the 79 Pirates…. But yeah, most championship teams have both flavors of pitching.
Our 2002 rotation was better than you remember. Washburn and Ramon Ortiz had career years and Lackey came on strong
Jerrod Washburn had a one time career year and Ramon Ortiz wasn’t that good either. Yes he won 18 games and fell off a cliff after that. Invest in more and better Latin America scouting like that cheatin Southeast Texas team and we’ll be better for it. Better starting rotations means more competitiveness ANNUALLY in the years to come and not just one playoff appearance in a entire decade.
💪 💪 💪 👈
Yes. This is why the Angels didn’t sniff the play offs at all after 2002.
Still. Waiting. For. Your. IIWPM. 😂
This bullpen obsession is becoming as bad as catcher back at HH in 2018 and 2019.
That was before Max Stassi became a decent hitter and was almost run out of town on a rail. I’m mad that Perry didn’t draft 20 SP’s this past summer. Brandon Woodruff and Chris Bassitt still exist ( late round draft picks and good SP’s ).
😭 😭
Dude – you’re replying to yourself now. Should we call you “Sybil”?
Strengthen the starting rotation, keep the shut down closer and this team is much better than last year. I’m good with this. I’d rather we put Detmers, Naughton, Junk and Bachman in the bullpen instead of spending money on RP.
We’ll all be crying in May if Perry does not fix the pen, I mean FIX it. Duracell is not coming back and relying on arms like Selman, Tyler, Quijada, Warren, Herget, Barria, Naughton, Junk, Canning and Wantz is a disaster in the making.
Note: Jeff Joiner’s IIWPM was the only version that attempted to stop the insanity.
The starting rotation still sucks
We had Raisel and still had a losing season. This is a rotation that can’t throw a QS sans Ohtani to save their own mother’s life. Just damm unbelievable!
😠 😠 💩 😭
Excuse me but Bachman just got here…..LOL!!!
Should we draft middle school kids or hell the ones on the LLWS teams? I like how CTPG super member ( yeah CB26 said a post of mine in a article from 2013 doesn’t matter in 2021, Uh yes it does fool and Jonathan India this year’s NL ROY winner took 3 yrs to get to the majors just as the article said…..). Like I said before some of CTPG have their head up their You Know What.
😆 😆 😆 💪
It is certainly one approach to pitching, and I would be happy having each of those pitchers (with Thor, pretty please) in the lineup. Detmers, Naughton, Junk in Salt Lake is better than needing to trot them out every week or so.
I guess it could be a bullpen of Duracell, Warren, Barria, Canning, Bachman, Wantz, Tyler, Selman, Quijada and Herget. That could be worse.
And C of Mathis backed up by Ward, Thaiss and Wallach. Might do.
I am kind of fine with running with Rengifo if we have those starters in place.
Who’s our starting rotation?
Ohtani, Thor?………………
Following the logic of the article, it would be Ohtani, Stroman, Rodon, Sandoval, Suarez … (with my hope to add Thor to the mix).
Did you not read the article this is meant to be commenting on?
Rev – I think this underscores the problem with the hypothetical financial limitations.
Trouble is, what’s more hypothetical? The 200M payroll we have never had but you seem to need, or a 180M range payroll we seem to always have?
I agree. Arte is a “paper” billionaire. He’s asset rich but cash poor.
I’m just saying this If I Were Perry Como identifies the problem probably better than any before it.
With Mathis bringing his cERA powers even a Salt Lake level bullpen will be lights out.
Brilliant.
