LA Angels Tuesday News Crash: Offer to Eppler

The Mets have made an offer to Billy Eppler of their General Manager position. It is an interesting development for “the Angels of the East Coast.”

Feel free to play along in the “If I Were Perry Minasian” series. Your suggested budget is here. Be patient as we schedule in all the Fanposts. This will be a hectic week. The qualifying offer acceptance deadline is fast approaching and there might be a rush of signings before the deadline for a new Collective Bargaining Agreement.

Shohei Ohtani and Raisel Iglesias are up for the All-MLB Team.  Voting ends November 19, 2021.  Shohei Ohtani won a Silver Slugger.  I’m not sure if we linked this before.

Yes, José Soriano is back.  No, he’s not going to move the needle in 2022.

Links From Around Baseball

Eduardo Rodriguez is now off the board, signed by the Tigers

Randy Arazorena and Jonathan India did, in fact, win their respective Rookie of the Year Awards.

Carlos Correa declined his qualifying offer.  So will Chris Taylor.

The Giants gave Gabe Kapler an extension through 2024.  I’m not surprised. He did a great job.

Former Major League infielder Julio Lugo passed away at the age of 45 of an apparent heart attack.  This is the second 45 year old in the last week or so. I’m feeling old.

The Marlins acquired right handed bullpen pitcher Louis Head from the Rays for a player to be named later or cash.

At the AZL Fall Stars game the Giants #6 prospect Hunter Bishop crushed a homer off the Dodgers #8 prospect Logan Knack.  Angels un-ranked prospect Coleman Crow struck out Hunter Bishop earlier in the game, though he did give up four unearned runs, a walk, and a homer in his one inning of work.  Oh well! Better luck next time, Coleman!

The Yankees made it official and hired Luis Rojas as their third base coach.

I have finally come back here after a long while! Unrelated to everything from today, which is a mixed bag of excitement and uncertainty, I would like to see some opinions here, who would anyone be okay signing for relief? I’m not focusing on the best of the best, as we all want that. But the next tier or even lower.

yikes! Ohtani…

“Fangraphs estimated his 2021 performance was worth $41 million and he’s worth even more than that due to his world-wide, mega-star status. ”

That arb deal is going to be ridiculous.

Also, Berrios with a career 108 ERA+ and 4.04 ERA signed a 7 yr deal with Toronto for $19mil per season.

eh, The Ohtani arb won’t be bad. He’s up for 5.5 this year, I think inking that deal hurt him a little as far as arb goes. He will def get a bump but it won’t be crazy.

The Syndergaard signing will be worth it if that convinces Stroman to sign with the Angels too.

Well, looks like The Indians have settled their lawsuit and can now become The Guardians. (I still think that is a dumb choice for a baseball team name. Git off mah lawn)

It is really dumb but I’m surprised how fast I got used to it.

Other recent re-brands I couldn’t believe were chosen but then got used to before I knew it:

Thunder
Pelicans
Kraken

I believe this GIF needs replay when we sign Stroman, along with the “We worked together” portion.

I wonder why it is only a 1 year deal for over the QO, rather than a 3 or 4 yr deal at a lower AAV? Maybe work on an extension, if he shows he can still pitch, during the 2022 season?

From Thor’s perspective, if he can come back this year healthy and pitch anywhere close to his pre TJ form he will get 4-6 years – $100-150+++ next FA period.

He just turned 29 in August.

From the Angels perspective, we desperately need a healthy ace-like Thor. Desperately

High risk/higher reward. Lets ride

He’s recovering from TJS. It’s a “show me” contract.

That gave me a thought. It would be interesting if instead of a set QO price, it was a minimum price. Teams could offer 1-year contract of any amount equal to or greater than the QO, but would only receive compensation if the player ultimately signed for a lower AAV.
