LA Angels Monday News Crash: Mets Gonna Met

The Angels were off Sunday, curiously, which allowed baseball’s stage to be taken by arguably the Angels of the NL, the New York Mets. Before we get there, a few quick team-related points.

Shohei Ohtani reached the 40-20 club with his 20th stolen base over the weekend. He continues to polish off his MVP campaign. Although Ohtani was hit in the pitching hand, Joe Maddon says he should still be able to make his Tuesday start, a comment which naturally you should take with a boatload of salt.

Andrew Heaney has already been booted from the Yankees rotation. The former Angel, who was actually scheduled to take the mound tonight at Angel Stadium, now gives way to Corey Kluber, although he should still feature prominently in the game. The Angels have not announced a starter yet, although Fangraphs believes it might be José Quintana.

Alex Curry announced on Twitter that she will be no longer covering the Angels, transitioning to a national Fox show centered on sports betting.

Around Baseball

The Houston Astros and Washington Nationals have mandated that all non-playing employees must receive the vaccine to continue to be employed. This does not extend to the players, probably because they are covered under the CBA and not directly under the purview of the team.

Sunday, Mets starter Noah Syndergaard celebrated his birthday. That morning, the team announced he had a “non-baseball related injury,” although it was later reported that he tested positive for COVID-19, drawing questions from the media and fans alike as to why the team reported it that way initially.

Later, Javier Báez, Francisco Lindor, and Kevin Pillar were among the Mets to “thumbs-down” at Mets fans, taking issue with the way that the fans frequently booed the team. The Mets later issued a statement saying that the players’ gestures were unacceptable.

The Orioles have now lost 18 of 19 games to the Rays this season. The futility demonstrated by Baltimore, juxtaposed with the fact that the Angels played terrible ball there last week, is incredibly demoralizing for a team that is struggling to put up offense right now. As we enter September, it remains an uphill battle for the Angels to post a winning season.

I refuse to go to MFY games at the Big A. It’s like being in fucking (August) Yankee Stadium.

The urine smell is not as pungent as MFY Stadium, so there’s that.

Bullpen game, Maddon has 9 pitchers all slated to try and pitch 1 inning, if it goes to extras then Fletcher moves to the mound.

Back in like 2015/16, I was sitting behind the Angels dugout, was a few beers in, Alex Curry was walking off after the player interview, I shouted “I love you Alex!”

She looked up, smiled, and waved. My heart grew 10 sizes that day, lmao.

Apologies for hitting on your wife, red floyd & DG!

Will miss her happy personality immensely.

I saw her at the front gate a couple months ago and yelled the same thing. Her response was the same as well, she turned and waved. I’m sure she was smiling as well but she had a mask on..

Laugh at me now:

Wasn’t in a good mood Friday and the thought of spending a night away from my son, mixing up my workout plans for the week, dealing with traffic, all to be surrounded by MFY fans wasn’t appealing.

So Friday afternoon I called my ticket rep and told him I couldn’t make Tuesday’s game but to credit my account so I can take some friends next weekend. No problem, done.

Two hours later the Angels announced Ohtani as the starter.

Of course… his pitching schedule is the worst in getting tickets and attending. It’s also Ohtani pillow night Tuesday

Is Ohtani pitches anything like he did the last time he faced the Yanks, I think you’ll wind up happy with your decision. Fingers crossed he doesn’t though.

Why even play him. Swinging a bat can add some stress to the right hand.

Same thing as with Watson: with Halos – 4.64 ERA, 1.18 WHIP. With Giants – 3.48 ERA and 0.87 WHIP.

Selman with Giants: 4.50 ERA, 1.00 WHIP. With Angels: 4.91 ERA and 1.18 WHIP.

We traded Watson for a few prospects. Hardly the same thing.

Senator_John_Blutarsky

Sure – we did get prospects that might become something useful. No one is disputing that. The only point being made is that Watson went to the Giants and pitched better than when he was a Halo. Selman has pitched worse as an Angel then when he was a Giant.

It just a data point, nothing more.

He pitched well for us the first 17 games or so too. Give him time.

(To be fair, most of the Angels damage comes from the 6 ER start in 0.0 innings on June 16 at OAK – so he really was pretty good for us, which is why he had value to trade).

Cowboy26

Watson was going to pitch better. Hes been with the Giants the previous 3 seasons so obviously they know how to manage him. His numbers were really good for us save 2 bad implosions. However Watson’s last 2 outings for the vaunted Gigantes have been pretty bad . It seems like if hes not used regularly has a tendency to implode.

Selman’s peripherals were clear warning sign and despite that I thought hes pitched ok for the Halos. Of course with a name like Selman well you know….

I didn’t know we’d waived him until just now. So….into the bin of history with Matt Harvey, Cody Allen and others.

Twebur

Upton will be traded or cut before the start of next year.

I’m just happy they are finally de cluttering their shit bin…….don’t need to watch Q, Sludgy or Claudio pitch again. Give the Yutes a chance…..who’s NEXT? Mr. Bundy, please call the front office.

I’d rather watch Cooper Chriswell struggle to make it through an inning. More curious to see if he is capable of making someone swing and miss. Even though we know he’ll likely suck, hasn’t been confirmed yet. Better than watching Q.

I was looking forward to facing Heandog, oh well. Old friends had good weekend showings. Cron is on a roll with a HR this weekend and a streak of 20 games getting on base. Noodles (Tommy LaStella) had a HR for the Giants and Goody also had a HR for the Reds.

Alex Curry leaving is good for her, bad and sad for us. She is the type that can light up the room by her presence and her always cheerful voice and outlook were very must appreciated by her fans here at CTPG. Thankx and goodluck Alex.

Since my retirement and departure from SoCal 10 years ago I had my view of Angels baseball restricted to mlb.tv, which meant being able to watch Alex was strictly during the game. This year I was seeing very little of her and thought she was already gone, but then mlb.tv just recently started showing pre and post game where I saw she was still around. It is sad to see that this was a shory lived thing. I have and will miss her

Interesting re Alex Curry. Have to wonder why leave the Angels for a sports betting show? Would that be consistent a promotion? Maybe because it’s a hosting job? Wierd. Anyway, good luck Alex!

Probably considered a promotion with a national show vs. a local area show with The Angels. More national TV exposure also = bigger future checks.

Money is likely better for her, but also she can now have a normal work schedule instead of sitting through every game waiting to do a post game interview for 30 seconds and then head home at 10pm. I think she lives in LA so the drive to the stadium every day is likely a hassle as well. Good luck to her, she’s been a shiny light during these dark seasons.

Pretty much any evening (morning and afternoon for that fact) around the ol’ DG kitchen table.

As my grandfather said, “If something wants out of your body, let it out.” His words have served me well.
