Asterisks cruise past Angels 4-1

Baseball’s favorite villains rolled through town so the fans who couldn’t boo them early in the year got a shot tonight. There wasn’t much to cheer early, but there was plenty to boo.

Patrick Sandoval started the game with a slightly better ERA than Asterisks starter Zack Greinke. Sandoval’s ERA took a hit when he gave up a grand slam to Kyle Tucker in the 4th inning. Greinke was brilliant, going 7 innings of shutout ball, giving up only 2 hits and striking out 7.

Those were the only runs of the game until Shohei Ohtani beat the shift and drive in Marsh to cut the deficit to 4-1. That run was the only one the Angels would push across the plate as David Fletcher grounded out to end the inning with runners on second and third.

I wish I had more. Just a depressing game.

Eh. Lame loss, but I am still over all encouraged. Sandoval had a bad inning. It happens. That’s all the Astros got. Greinke owned us. It’s happened to better teams. This type of loss happens, but the game still felt more competitive than past games Vs Cole/Verlander when it didn’t even seem like we were able to put up a fight.

The Astros are still generally better than us and it sucks.

The Astros are ‘generally better than us’ when we have Trout and Rendon in the IL.

Houston was missing Gurriel and Bregman. Angels are just not at the level of overall quality of the Astros, yet.

Yeah. That game sucked, but at least it was a case of “we stop them, they stop us” and then Sandoval had his big pooh…. then it was back to stalemate. This beats the seven innings of ass kicking they used to give us. I hope it leads to being better than them more often next year, etc.

But they are two of their better bats, right? Plus, Gurriel “kills” the Angels. Astros are a better club, one would have delusions to suggest otherwise or let us say, Angels have not proved a thing to suggest otherwise. It’s not about the flashiest players. (Ref. Oakland As).

What side of the fence with Rendon are you? Most people on this site consider him a mistake. I am not one of them.

Of course, Rendon has not been himself for awhile now.

He was fine last year. Fulfilled the expectations of providing the Angels solid hitting and lineup protection behind Trout. Hopeful Rendon will be 100% come next opening day. He can add a lot to the team.

Agree. When I said “not himself for awhile” I was fully aware that last year we did see a bit of the real Rendon. I really meant all of 2021.

Sung to the Carmen Overature (aka bad news bears there).

Angels are win-ning
The board is so hap-py
Projecting them as champs
They will be on stamps

(The next day)

Angels are los-ing
Man this team is lame
Fletch can’t get a hit
They’ll never win a game

Oh well, I understand the concession folks had a good game plan and executed it flawlessly.

I’m not down. Yes, we should have scored Stassi in the 2nd. Yes, we should have been more patient and run up Greinke’s pitch count. But we can still win 103 games this season if’n we win these last 45 games. I think I’ll go check the SLC and Rocket City boxes now.

Good and bad news from the minors. Both our two top teams won. The Amazing Criswell wasn’t quite amazing, not finishing the 5th. He gave up 6 runs, whiffed 8, walked 3. The Bees won it 11-9 and it came at Shoey’s expense. Shoey now with an 11.57 ERA. Rengifo homered. Gatewood, too.

Rocket City won 8-4. Davis Daniel also didn’t finish the 5th, leaving with a 4-2 lead. He, too, struck out 8 with 0 walks.

Plumber Update: Michael Stefanic had three hits tonight raising his AAA batting average to .332. This is his third straight start at shortstop after spending all of last week manning the hot corner. I suspect he’ll get to move all around the infield at the Big League level when rosters expand on September 1st.

I’d start him in the outfield too, work on it over the winter….make him the next Rengifo, so we don’t need to see Rengifo.

Is there a formal ceremony to convert to Zobrism?

Fletch did very well in that role. A additional ‘Fletch’ would be amazing.

1-home run in 7 games. We need PEDs. Pitching was good tonight but not good enough.

I had a blast until I saw Greinke take the mound. Had no idea who was pitching prior to seeing him trot out there. FML

Gotta say, I did enjoy watching him pitch, though.

Hopeless. Just hopeless. There’s always next year. Football is close at least.
