Sho Deals: Angels Win Pitching Duel 2-1

A pitchers duel in Arlington? It happened. Fortunately for the Angels, it was Shohei Ohtani doing the dueling.

The Angels got on the board first when Juan Lagares scored from second on a passed ball.

The next run came in the fifth due to a solo shot by Captain Jack. It was 2-0 at that point.

The Rangers would plate a run in the bottom of the sixth on a Adolis Garcia ground out. That’s what a pitcher’s duel this was. 2 of the three total runs were scored on non hits.

The story of the night is clearly Shohei Ohtani as stretched his lead in the MVP race by going 6 innings of 1 run ball, striking out 6 and walking none.

Just to pile on:

In fact, there were no walks in the game until Raisel Iglesias walked Adolis Garcia to lead off the 9th and make the game more nerve racking than Angel fans needed. A K and a double play iced it

Went again last night. Key take away – the Rangers are even worse than we are but made a few nice plays to keep them in the game. Thank goodness for Heim having that brain fart. (I guess Upton’s brain fart essentially gave it back.) Adell looks so much better at the plate this year even though he went 0-4. Night and day. Oh and this guy Shohei, he might turn into a decent player. He’s got pretty good stuff (even though I don’t think he had his best stuff last night).

Funny – last off-season the Angels went to Arb with Shohei and we were wondering about his cost.

At this point do you go to him this off-season and try to sign him to a 5 year, 100 million deal?

he’s signed through 2022 at $5.5 million next year. There would only be one year of Arb left in 2023 before he reaches free agency in 2024. So the 5 year at 100 million would be a tack on. Not sure he would agree to a buy out of 4 of his prime free agent years for that amount but it would be worth exploring.

As I mentioned 3 seconds after you, his arb value will be well above $20 mil per season so a 5 yr deal would be a pay cut.

As you know, he’s signed for next year but say he has a 2022 like his 2021. What’s a guess what his arb deal for 2023 would come to? Assume 50 HRs, 25 SB, a similar 2.90 ERA.

$35 mil? More?

Cowboy26

what would his free agent contract be worth in 2024 at the prime age of 29? That is the most interesting question.

This is why I thought MNT would get a bigger deal. Bauer already makes more when he’s not suspended. Others will blow past Mike’s contract. Shohei should easily get $40 mil per season, maybe more.

Isn’t Bauer at something like 35M for three years (including the signing bonus)? MNT’s contract is both the value and the length – absorbing the risk that he is injured (like this year) or (knock on wood) diminishes in his abilities over time. Even so, his 37M a year runs until he is 38.

That would smash the record. He’s a great player but we’ve really only seen 3/4 of a year of high performance.

Well, if it goes to ARB after next year, they will have more information. Does he maintain this level, playing both ways? If so, and if he waits, sure ARB might be north of 30M. Highest ever is Mookie just a few years ago at 27M. One could make a case for Ohtani at that price.

The question is could the Angels lock him up for that year and some FA years at that or a slightly lower price? If so, for how long. It would be in their interest to do so, and with Pujols and Upton (after next year) coming off the books, and the flood of younger players coming in (Adell, Marsh, Walsh, plus some of Sandoval, Suarez, Detmers, C Rod, Packy, and any of the draft class), we might be able to save in places.

I don’t think 5/100 would remotely do it. Would 5/150 though? Are we willing, after 2/3 of an elite injury-free season willing to pay that much for that long?

I’m guessing $40 million per.

I’ve got no idea how much it will cost but I do not know how the Angels even let Ohtani hit FA.

It’s the same conundrum that was faced with Trout, how do you let a generational talent get away? Simply put, you cannot.

According to Forbes, Moreno is worth $3.5 billion. With that much money you open the checkbook for Ohtani.

Remarkable performance by Ohtani. ERA south of 3 now.

I know this season has been frustrating and we miss Trout and Rendon’s whole existence as a Halo basically sucks, but man o man, we are witnessing probably the greatest baseball season by a player in history. Ohtani is just…honestly, I lack the superlatives to describe him that would do him justice.

I remember being so bummed after he got blown up by the Yankees and his ERA ballooned like a full point, but low and behold, its back under 3 again. Sure it’d be way more fun if he was doing all this while the team was also contending, but I can’t let that take away from his accomplishments. I feel lucky I get to watch him play for my favorite team.

Shohei is just otherworldly on the mound lately. I do firmly believe he’s an alien cyborg sent to Earth to show us how to play this game properly. Cy Young and MVP? Could happen.

Angels doing Angel things…beating the bad teams. 11:00 am game time tomorrow, should see some runs scored.

Coming up…Dodgers, Jays and Astros. Need to get the tank back on track.

Disagree.

I’d like to beat those teams.

A couple places in the draft would not mean that much.

Like and Will are far apart. It’s not like we won’t try but just look at the lineup. Perry is injecting unproven talent at an alarming rate. Packy?

Man, that’s a tough road to hoe…. though aren’t most roads pretty tough to hoe? Wouldn’t this term make more sense if it was row, like in a field, where I would hoe?

Well, hoe hum. Those next three series will be fun just to see how the young fellers stack up against opponents that punch way above their weight class. We probably lose six of those games at least…

It’s clear to me that Perry is just rolling these guys out to see what he has to work with next off season. I’m good with it, 100%. It’s fresh, fun and will make the last two months more interesting. As we saw at the trading deadline, no acquisitions, just dumps. While not announcing it, Perry’s desire and first priory is on next season. Aka undercover Tank Commander. Yeah, we can tread 0.500 with these guys but there should be no shame in a collapse as this will lead to a good draft pick.

Come next year, I will take a futures bet on the Halos to win it all. Should be a very dangerous lineup. I’m trusting Perry will fix the pen. I’m sure he is embarrassed.

Radio guys were mentioning that we have best record in MLB against sub 500 teams. Incredible. Suppose that means we have something close to the worst record in MLB against winning teams?

Shohei is the first pitcher we’ve had in a long time that I’m completely at ease when he’s on the mound. I forgot how good that feels.

so tonite at Chattanooga, Junk got the start. He didn’t stink but he was kind of meh. 5-2/3 innings 8 hits 1 walk 4 K’s and 3 earned runs. Elvis also was in the building . he followed with 3 strikeouts in 1-1/3 innings of scoreless/hitless relief to get the win. Our Heaney throw ins didn’t shit the bed so thats encouraging

If we can end up with 2-3 starters and some bullpen pieces from the 24 pitchers we signed, that would be huge.

I am not keen to quickly resell any such acquisitions though.

probably a total of winning to get there and losing to fall back. After 2019 and 2020 I’m glad to be where we are. Yes, of course, 64-44 would be better but it’s progress and if we can do it with scrubs and kids it’s impressive.

Also, 0-4 for Jo. He had a great 1st game back, though.

Do you know if he plays 2B too? It’s actually going to be interesting to see who is on our bench next year between Goose, Jack, Rengifo, Ward, Thaiss, Stefanic and other guys.

Between all the hitters we are getting back, Marsh and Adell in the OF, and all the bench options we have I really think the Angels can get away with just signing Iglesias to continue at SS and then spending any other money they have on PITCHING, with a side of pitching, then a little more pitching.

Twebur

Mayfield…MLB career 36 at 3rd. 31 at SS. 19 at 2nd. Over 300 games at 2nd in the minors. Next year keep Mayfield and Goose.
Maybe go 1985 retro, defensive SS platoon, Mayfield and Stefanic as your offense guy. Save the money on Iggy and buy every available pitcher who’s ever pitched.

I truly believe gimpy Rendon is all we will ever see. Assuming he ever recovers from this one. He will then move on to the next one. And then the next. By the end, it will look as bad as Pujols contract. I hope I’m wrong.
