Patrick Sandoval Almost Has a No-Hitter V. Twins

Patrick Sandoval pitched 8.1 innings of no-hit baseball in Minneapolis against the Twins today.

He gave up a double down the line and then got a deep fly out for the second out of the ninth but Joe Maddon said “No More”. He brought in Raisel Iglesias who gave up a double to score the runner (and the run charged to Sandoval). Then the final out was recorded and the Halos had their 2-1 victory, a much more enjoyable cruise of an afternoon than the box score might indicate.

The Angels got their runs in the first inning with a brainfart by Andrelton Simmons. he tried to throw out Shoehi Ohtani on a sure-thing groundout as the superstar retreated to 2B. IF that wasn’t bad enough, the Twins 1B Miguel Sano (who would make the final out of the game fwiw) didn’t catch the relay throw and a run scored on the error. Upton had been what should have been the easy out on that grounder then scored from 2B on a double by Jose Iglesias.

Okay a little too much overmangaing by Joe Maddon but a win is a win and we have us a cost-controlled #2 lefty in the person of Patrick Sandoval. LTBU!

I just saw the highlight of Rooker’s double to break it up and man, that’s a brutal way to lose it. Pitch was middle middle but jammed the hitter and hugs the inside of the line, that’s tough. Buuut it’s safe to say Patrick Sandoval is going to be a very solid pitcher.

Don’t look now but we might actually be putting together a nice young staff. Ohtani, Sandoval, Suarez, CRod and Detmers isn’t too shabby to start with. Maybe keep Cobb or sign/trade for a top level guy. Let a couple of the fast rising kids from this year’s draft help fortify the pen with Iglesias and sign a couple of others because I don’t need to see any of the current bullpen back minus Raised.

Yeah, with a couple of breaks on Detmer’s and CRod’s developmental progress, this might be happening next year. With a real bullpen and some actual healthy players, we could be pretty dammed good. Just quit the overmanaging, Joe..

We need to swap with the Nats for two of Scherzer, Hudson, and Hand. Give Scherzer two years and an option or something along those lines if that’s what he wants to waive his no-trade rights.

I can see Arte and Scott Boras having brunch next offseason in the OC but Perry won’t make that loud of a splash, will he?

Scherzer is not going to sign an extension prior to a trade. He is going to want to test free agency.

Why run the risk of a 2 mo rental? Scherzer for 2 months is not worth the prospects it would cost.

Great game by Sandoval.

Respectfully, Raisal is not a dominant lock down closer.

I would classify him as a top-7 closer. Probably around 5th. Behind Hendriks Graveman Kimbrel Hader Jansen Melancon. We need that.

I also wouldn’t pay him.

Jansen ? Ummmm, no.

I would not put Jansen ahead of him.

Enter Sandman. Sandoval announced his presence with authority today. I was a little out of it (had to go to ER, kidney stones, going to be all right though) and I zoned out for the early part of the game. I was conscious for the last four innings, though. That guy was putting the baseball wherever the hell he wanted it today. Maybe we really did find ourselves a gold nugget in the morass of dreck we call a farm system. I don’t want to focus on anything bad tonight, though. That was an utterly masterful performance today.

I for one, am glad to see the Soggy Joe honeymoon is over. The guy is a complete numpty when it comes to handling the pitching staff and that’s been the book on him since his Rays/Cubs days.

He’s about to reach a full season’s worth of games managed next week and already many of us can tell he’s not capable of putting a team over the top with his idiotic in-game management. The man simply cannot read the room and more often than not, will go with one of “his guys” with the game on the line.

I think I’m most confused why the Rockies had scouts at the Angels game. A team clearly in rebuild mode would only credibly be interested in 2 players who played tonight: Marsh or Sandoval. Neither of which, considering the depth of our system the Angels should be willing to trade.

If the ROX pick up Marsh, they will be two thirds of their way to an all House of David outfield.

Make that trade

I mean, I like the potential of Marsh but he has yet to put together full years. If a team wants to overpay, you let them. Angels are either playing him full time to see what they got or showcasing him (while he is healthy).

Marsh will be our starting right fielder when Trout returns…bank on it. His defense, base-running and ability to control the strike zone make him an upgrade even without doing much hitting. But the stroke is there and I love how he uses all fields. He’s a keeper. Either Adell starts fulfilling his star potential quickly or you ship him out for some controllable pitching.

Yeah but I don’t think the Angels consider Marsh as an untouchable. The Angels are committed to getting him ABs, that is very apparent to me. They would not trade him for a rental though. A guy like Gray seemingly could be had for a couple mid prospects. Angels don’t need position players. I’m clueless.

Love it. Love Sandoval. And we got him from a trade deadline deal sending Maldonado away. Love to see us continue to build the farm sending off Cobb, Heaney, R Iglesias, Watson and maybe Upton if we eat part or most of his contract. Ok maybe not Upton since his isn’t a 1 yr deal but might at least dangle him.

FungoAle

We could easily replace the pitchers in the short team to help build up the farm in pursuit of deadline deals.

EXACTLY THIS!!

They could really fill out their AA/AAA pitching depth with a smart trade deadline. One of those guys could become the next Sandoval and give the team breathing room in case of any injuries next year.

I would prefer to let the guy finish what he started. It’s not like we’re contending for a playoff spot this year anymore.

…and it want like the hit he gave up was ripped. He was not falling behind hitters. Smh. Would have rather seen Sandy give up the hard hit double to Donaldson than Iglesias.

Sandy and Suarez look like they’re locking down that #4-5 slots in the rotation with #6 Canning or somebody else for next season. If Detmers can be that #3 ish type, they’ll be an ace and a bullpen from competition. They need some more depth in AAA though.

Deserved to finish it out. Not many times in a career can you walk away with a CG 1-hit win. Especially since the hit came in the 9th. Even Langer was voicing disappointment.

Somehow inherited runners scoring don’t seem so bad when they don’t cost us the game. Last night was awful. And any Cishek appearance is also awful. But this is ok.

No problem for me with bringing in Raisel. Since Nelson “won’t you let me take you on a juice” Cruz is gone, Donaldson is Minnesota’s best hitter. Sandy was at 106 pitches, it would have been a lefty vs righty matchup.

It’s not like Joe went to Cishek. He brought in our best reliever and we won. I’ll take it!

However….our pen is so bad that Joe has asked Raisel to get too many two inning saves and it’s wearing him down.

I am often irritated by how early Joe pulls his starters, but yes, Donaldson crushes lefties, and this change seemed optimal.
