Angels are the Mets West, Lose 2-0

The Angels lose vs the Mariners today to lose the series. Dylan Bundy went 6 innings with 6 strikeouts and got the L with 2 runs allowed on 5 hits and 1 walk. Still no win for him on the season, the Angels are the Mets west.

Recap

The game started in panic with an Ohtani HBP right on the elbow just as Sutton talked about him starting tomorrow. He seemed fine enough to stay in the game and stole second. Then third. But the Angels did not score. Dylan Bundy then pitched a 1-2-3 first.

More baserunners with an Upton hit and a Pujols HBP, but no runs again. Bundy got another 1-2-3 inning, a little irritated that the offense has failed twice now.

Ohtani got on base yet again, reaching on a forced error. His speed was not taking a break. Trout walked and it was looking to be a run this time! Nope, no runs again. Dylan Bundy was in shambles enough to allow a hit. But not enough to allow a run.

The offense stopped trying to pretend in the 4th, and went down in order. Bundy allowed a few hits and when it looked like he was going to get out of it, a bloop single scored a run for Seattle.

Fletcher walked, but that was it in the 5th. Bundy allowed a double and a sac fly which made it 2-0 Mariners.

Walsh singled in the 6th, but was stranded. 6 innings of not being able to score. Dylan Bundy looked hurt and he was… on the inside. Despite it he made it through the 6 down 2-0.

The Angels got nothing but a Fletcher double in the 7th. No runs for Bundy. Slegers pitched the 7th inning. He made mistakes but didn’t allow a run.

Rendon got a hit but that was it. Again. Again. No runs. Mike Mayers pitched again… again, per usual. No more runs allowed, but still losing.

Final chance to score, flyout by Upton, Pujols struck out, and Churches grounded out. Shut out for the first time this year.

Upcoming

The Angels drop to 13-13 on the year. Next are the Rays and Ohtani will be pitching tomorrow. 6:30 PM

The bi-polar offense sucks.

I genuinely wonder what Mike Trout is thinking at this point.

I mean, I didn’t watch the game today, but clearly he didn’t nothing to put runs on the board.

Idk what this means, but if it’s trying to imply that he didn’t play well today, Trout walked, hit the ball 105 mph, 102 mph, and ran into a very tough Kendall Graveman who is now throwing 99 mph with tail.

It means I did not watch the game, but seeing as how nobody crossed home plate (including Trout), more could be done from everyone. Also, I’m sick of hearing about ball velocity.

If you meant to say “clearly he didn’t do anything to put runs on the board,” I am taking issue with that statement.

As for exit velocity, it’s definitely too late for that discussion today. I value it, and I feel that on average, based on how he hit the ball and the xBA provided by baseball savant, Trout should have one hit, providing him with a nice, tidy 1-for-3 with a BB performance. Many Angels were much worse.

When the Angels stop with the façade of trying to win, I’ll start paying attention, until then even with Trout and Ohtani it just feels like they are intentionally sabotaging themselves. Pujols is down to a .192/.250/.385 triple slash. He has no value on the bases or on defense. His CAREER Angels OBP is .311. Show him the door already.

I agree, personally. I was ballistic with joy when we signed pujols like most, but my feelings towards him as a player have soured year after year. Now I genuinely don’t want him playing and honestly wish he’s just go away.

I’d be happier if the team sat him and still lost than lost with him, truly.

Sit him in favor of? Lagares or Schebler are the two candidates, I suppose. Will they hit better than Albert? Or do we go with the clubhouse presence (as Halo71, and Maddon (when advocating for Fowler) advocate?

He’s hitting at below replacement level. You just keep cycling guys through until one of them clicks even a little bit. I don’t know why Ward hasn’t been given a better chance. He hit well last September, had a great spring. Then as far as I know he was sent to the alternate site and is still healthy. There is just no way anyone can justify a 250 OBP from someone who provides no value on defense or on the bases. Billy Hamilton never found consistent playing time and he was a gold glove level CF who could steal tons of bases. Just because Pujols hits a homer a week, they can’t have him in the lineup and expect that to be the best use of those abs.

He’s terrible, I agree MH25. Would rather watch ANYONE else cycle through the lineup or positions on the field. Let’s be honest, if he wasn’t make $25 million a year he would not be out there. What’s the definition of insanity again?

But he’s a legend and provides a clubhouse presence that can’t be measured with your fancy stats!

Because Arte doesn’t care as long as he’s still a fan attraction like if Tom Brady stayed in TB and Colin Cowherd still kissing his ring like he’s the Pope till he’s 50. If Albert wasn’t Albert and only made $25M he’d be long gone. Angels continue to draw 3M a year after 5 straight losing seasons with a 15c pitching staff? 😫

Face it, with this pitching staff this is barely a .500 team. They are right where they should be in the standings.

Hope is all we have. We knew things would have to pretty much all break just right for this team to have a playoff shot – let alone get over .500 for once.
