LA Angels Wednesday News Crash: Negotiations Start

Good morning Angels fans! Hope you feel good today after that win! Have some links to go with your victory milk!

Angels News

The Angels won yesterday in Ohtani’s return to the mound. Trout, Pujols, and Suzuki all had home runs! Canning got the relief win, and Ohtani is not injured! Hazzah!

Rendon is still not ready to come off the IL even though he can tomorrow. That really stings.

Around Baseball

MLB and the players will start negotiations for the new CBA now. Well, enjoy 2021, we may not get baseball next year.

Adrian Morejon will have Tommy John. Padres lose another pitcher.

Juan Soto is now on the 10 day IL. Shoulder issues. Not good.

Mike Moustakas is out with a non COVID illness for at least 10 days. Oh yeah, those exist.

Braves and Freeman won’t negotiate an extension during the season. Arte rubbing his hands together right now.

Neil Walker retires. The longtime Pirate is done at 35.

4 players have retired already for mental reasons. Sports Illustrated looks into why.

The A’s have won 10 in a row after going 1-7. Things are getting weird, so weird that the lights went out during their game yesterday.

The Reds and Sneks game was suspended due to snow, it will resume tonight and then the regular game for today afterwards.

Corbin Burnes has 40 Ks and 0 walks in 4 games. That may have never been done ever before.

Oh yeah and MLB the Show 21 is out now, on Xbox as well. The former PlayStation exclusive gets to be on the Xbox Series as well. Still no PC port.

Not particularly germane to anything, a “1 in a million” clip featuring Angels/Rangers:

On a minors deal, sure.

I’ll sign about anybody on a minors deal.

I am proud of those of us here at CTPG for having the views that you do have about depression and noticing that MLB does not have the fortitude to take care of their own struggling to deal with their depression and look upon it as a disease that needs medical assistance just the same as Covid. We have an issue in our family of one with long term Major Depression and medication does work and our loved one is able to cope. And yes the union needs to address this in the negotiations.

Feel for Rojas. Gets his 1st knock followed by a 5 days layoff.

Hard to get going that way

I think that’s the same article linked above. I agree that it’s very good and is an eye-opener.

Shoot I had opened up a few of the other links and didn’t see that ‘71 thanks! I would delete but thinks it’s worth the double post.

Nice game for Cron yesterday. The Suzuki home run was probably my favorite moment from last nights game.

It always amazes me to see highlights from Coors, because I felt Cron’s double was either gone or should have been caught.

I think it’s a fascinating place to play, but I would probably be tearing my hair out if I had to watch 81 games there.

However, if everyone played at Coors, that just might solve the strikeout problem.

Suzuki is a badass.

I really like Suzuki. He’s in the mold of the John McDonald-type – the savvy veteran who’s been around and you just can’t help but root for them.

I loved hearing him say in the post game interview that he had always wanted to play for the Angels.

I’ve wanted him to play for the Angels for years. Good player at Fullerton then the class he showed after Adenhart’s death.

Would’ve been nice to have him the last decade or so.

I predict Rendon comes off the IL Thurs (off day) and plays Friday. You lose a roster spot if you take him off today. Thurs is an off day. Silly to take him off today with tomorrow an off day.

That blurb makes it sound like Rendon’s return is not imminent. Reading between the lines there, I would guess he doesn’t come back until after this weekend.

That piece is a bit more hopeful. This lineup misses something without Rendon in there.

Better to take the few extra days to get it to heal than to risk re-injuring it. If it becomes a season long nagging injury because he tried to come back too soon it could upend the season.Dare I say, if somehow The Angels are in the hunt for a playoff spot they will need a healthy Rendon both offensively and defensively.

Thursday is actually not an off-day. We play the first of four at Houston on Thursday.

A’s had 2 shutouts yesterday, now that’s some pitching….CJ Cron had 5 rbi last night in Colo…..Trouty’s HR last night was his hardest hit ball to date, Wow……. Did Angels brass have knowledge of Simba’s depression issues before not resigning him and if so what should a team, MLB, or Union be required to do to help? Depression can be temporary or short term. Long term can be controlled……Shoe was lite up yesterday, sorry to see that….Once again last night the Halos showed that the 7th inning on can be enjoyable…..Shohei Ohtani is fun to watch as he is truly remarkable…..Dodgers had 2 hits and won the game because the M’s had only one hit. Now that’s pitching at it’s best…..I’m done. Good Morning Folks and have a great day. 😎

Simba’s depression is an interesting subject and reflects the mental strain this pandemic has had on those who were previously coping, but dealing with anxiety or depression just below the surface. This exists widely in society – so why should it be any different in MLB? Wealth is not a predictor of coping skills.

Covid, the pandemic, the uncertainty of the times and the political environment have been incredibly tough on the most emotionally stable in our society. So it is no surprise that it has logarithmically affected our most vulnerable.

I hope these guys have access to good mental health professionals. More and more society has accepted that counseling is ‘normal’ and not a sign of weakness or ‘unmanly’ behavior. This is particularly true on the Coasts. But I wonder what it is like in a dugout? With guys in their 20s. If it’s anything like the locker rooms of my sports days, there was not a lot of room for therapy other than the physical type.

This struck me from the article linked here (and posted above).

Unlike players who have physical injuries and are placed on the injured list, those with mental health issues do not receive pay or service time if they are placed on the restricted list, as is the case with Sherriff, Buttrey, Devenski and Haseley.

I hope they address that in the new CBA. It is more and more clear that this game takes a toll, but also that mental health can be just as affected as physical health.

Great discussion by this community… thanks for posting that link John. We all get lost in fandom sometimes. My guess is that mental health is a little behind other metrics in professional sports and still has a stigma that you don’t ask for help for things not ‘physical’.

Wow that’s terrible and definitely needs addressing in the new CBA.

That SI article was really good. It added a much needed perspective to what is an illness that impacts more people than many realize.

I’m concerned those players might be attributing their issues to not wanting to be a baseball player, when the problems actually go deeper. I hope they get the help they actually need and don’t find themselves in the same situation in their next jobs.
