On Jackie Robinson Day, the day when all players were #42, news came down during the game that Chadwick Boseman passed away. Boseman played the legendary Robinson in the movie “42”. It was poetic in away. Life is odd like that sometimes.
Other big news during the game was the trade of Tommy La Stella to the Oakland Athletics. Hugs were flowing all around before we even heard the trade had happened.
Andrew Heaney tossed a gem tonight, certainly his best start of the year and one of those flashes he shows of what he can be capable of. Heaney allowed only 2 hits allowed through first 5 innings and only 4 hits overall. His only blemish was in the 6th inning when he served up a double to J.P. Crawford and an RBI single to red-hot Sam Haggerty.
Andrew Heaney’s fine line:
The Angels would tie it up after Shohei Ohtani stole second to get himself into scoring position in the 6th. Ohtani is now 4 for 4 in stolen base attempts this year. Up stepped Albert Pujos who smacked his 665th double which tied him with George Brett for 6th on the all-time doubles list. It was also his 2,087th RBI and he now stands alone in 3rd all time on that list.
The other story of the night was Justin Upton who went 3 for 4 with a double and an RBI. It’s a been a long while since we’ve seen J-Up have a good game and that must have feel real good for the slumping outfielder.
Mike Trout continued his career punishment of the Mariners with a home run in the 8th to give the Angels a 2 run cushion – and they were going to need it.
Ty Buttrey finished off the 8th cleanly for Heaney, but made everyone sweat with a 9th inning lead off double by Kyle Seager. Seager did go on to score, but the Angels held on and took the series opener 3-2.
I like to imagine players performing based on how much they want to escape the pit that is this team.
Heaney? Inspiring job, really the best you can do. Probably won’t work for him, but you gotta like the effort.
Simmons? Another injury? Apparently he does really enjoy those video games with Fletch/Shohei.
I know we should probably be losing to our competition for a draft slot, but I still enjoyed the win.
RIP Chadwick Boseman. So young.
Get on Up
This game had a bit of everything. A really good effort for Heaney, a Trout bomb, 3 hits by Upton, and a pointless trade that we’ll “laugh” at in the future, kind of like that Blanton et al photo. Or that Harvey signing.
I remember a pointless trade a few years back, but Tommy Boy turned out alright
Yea but did he help us get to the playoffs or have a winning season?
As Mike Trout has proved, one player can’t carry the Angels
Great game Heaney! When we needed it most.
A win?
