LA Angels Thursday News Crash: Teams Go On Strike

The cancellation of the Brewers/Reds game comes after the police shooting of Jacob Blake in Kenosha Wisconsin.  The two teams both decided not to play, so this is not a forfeit.  Some refer to the situation as teams going on strike. Some MLB teams are considering not playing in the wake of the cancellation of the Brewers game against the Cincinnati Reds reported Jeff Passan.  Sure enough, the Dodgers Giants game was postponed. Gabe Kapler says the issues are “bigger than sports.” while David Price says “Silence is violence.”

The Mariners Padres game was also postponed.  Dee Gordon explained the decision making process.  The Marlins and the Mets mostly did not show up at the field.  Individual players also opted out of playing to take a stand. Jason Heyward opted not to play.  Matt Kemp, of the Rockies, also went on strike.

Other News From Around Baseball

MLB is considering going with a double bubble system for the playoffs with the American League playoffs to be located in California.  Zach Plesac remains demoted to the Cleveland secondary facility while Mike Clevinger has been brought back to the big club.  Do you think any clubs are kicking the tires on Plesac?  Here is a fun article about how the Astros are slipping into mediocrity.  Gosh darn baseball bloggers!  How dare they ask Rick Renteria a question?

With the NBA and MLB teams postponing/protesting games yesterday and today, it was very classy of the Angels that they were the 1st team to postpone a Wednesday game

this morning I started thinking that instead of trading for prospects we should be looking for reasonable pitching with at least one year of control beyond 2020. Bundy is the model for that. We need players who’ll be ready before 2025.

Yes, I know. Easier said than done.

We need players who will be ready in 2022 – 2023. The year 2023 will probably be the Angels best shot. Pujols and Upton will be gone, freeing up their money for free agents. Trout and Rendon will still be south of 35; Fletcher and Ohtani will be under 30; Adell, Marsh, Canning, Sandoval, Barria, and Suarez will all be entering their primes. Some of those might be traded or bust, but that’s where the money from Pujols/Upton comes in.

Bundy doesn’t help the team this year or next because the team isn’t competitive. Then, in 2022, he’s either gone or expensive. You don’t hang onto a player based on the hope he might agree to a cheap extension.

The NL Bubble in Texas is a bit odd, must mean the Astros are being kicked to the NL Central again!
