LA Angels Monday News Crash: A Lonely Easter

Well folks, it looks as if we’re gearing up for Easter at home, alone, without large gatherings. Social distancing requirements have been extended until April 30. Former Angel Jim Edmonds is hospitalized, in addition to countless others.

With that being said, there’s no reason we can’t still get our fill on sports, especially baseball.

Some people are trawling through Baseball Reference

Just in case you missed the deal last week between MLB and the MLBPA…

MLB.com thinks we’ll be talking about SS Kyren Paris in 2022

What kind of sports books could you be reading to get your fill?

We have our inaugural CTPG podcast coming out! Stay tuned for that!

Countin’ flowers on the wall
That don’t bother me at all……
Playin’ Solitaire til’ dawn
with a deck of fifty-one
Watchin’ Captain Kangaroo
that don’t bother me at all
Now don’t tell me there’s nothin’ to do….

I’m supposed to be on the road today, on my way to the Metroplex for the Halos-stRanger series, now I’m helping my 13 year old grandson with his school work. I’m not complaining about assisting him, just frustrated with Manfred’s lack of direction/news.

MLB needs to come up with the scheduling plan or cancel the whole damn season. Stay safe everyone, it will get better someday.

Probably being told to sit tight by the Government. Baseball is the backbone of our society.

Just chill mah man, there are more pressing issues at hand right now.

Stay safe, and healthy everybody. Keep your distance always, wash your hands often, and gargle often.

And call someone. Someone you really get along with, and haven’t spoken to in awhile. Talk about other things, vent with them.

It’s Monday! Or at least that’s what my phone tells me. The hospital my SO works at has had their first corona patients now, so she can’t even come home without fear of infecting me, she’s staying with her parents in their converted and detached garage….

It’s hitting just about every social class now. Heads of state and athletes alike. Young and old. Rich and poor. Just protect yourselves and your family so you get to watch Mike Trout again. And stay the heck home!

I’ve been watching Ken Burns Baseball, but it just not scratching the baseball itch. Never take the normalcy of life for granted again. It’s amazing how weird it feels to have no live sports on TV. The entire world just feels…off.

Victor’s interviews with Ken Rosenthal and Scott Boras were really good. At least we can have an hour a day of Victor.

Wow. I didn’t know she worked at a hospital. So now you can’t see her for a weeks or months potentially? Never thought about health care workers and them having to isolate even from those closest to them. It’s a crazy world right now..

Yeah, she’s my hero right now. That’s pretty much the situation. We’re gonna go sit in a parking lot and park 6 ft apart and eat lunch later. The anxiety is just so much fun!

The pictures of people having big moments through windows are breaking me. The woman showing her grandpa she was engaged, the doctor seeing his kid through a window…

Think about how fun writing history books will be in 20 years. Been a crazy few years.

If a manager did this today, he’d be arrested.

Only two K’s, must have been a lot of quick ground outs. Still insane, though.

The real question is, was either pitcher wearing pants?

With video and/or photos available, pants remain unverified at this time. However, pants, as always, remain optional.

Marichal 227 pitches, Spahn 201. That was in early July and Spahn went on to finish the season 23-7, 2.60. That was his last good season but probably more due to him being 42 at the time of this game. Geez…Marichal was 25-8 that year, 2.41 and had plenty left in his career.

Hey, this is great fun! Looking at the stats I see Marichal tied with Koufax in wins. Whitey Ford led the AL with 24, then Spahn’s 23.

Wow, nice research. 201 pitches at 42 years old, amazing. Maybe MLB is going the wrong way. Make the ball softer, limit homers, tighten up rosters for pitching. The hard ball has made the league rely far too much on K’s, because even medium contact can mean a homer. A softer ball could allow pitchers to throw many more fastballs, limiting the stress on their arms, allowing pitchers to throw more innings.

OT: Just swung by HH to see if it was still standing. It is, but barely. Pretty much 0 comments for days upon end, besides for 2 writers commenting to themselves. It’s a barren wasteland. I actually feel bad for them. It’s gotta suck putting effort into writing only for nothing to come back. I mean, fuck Vox and they’re scabs, but they’re still people and it’s depressing to see.

The new Vox model seems to have them writing for more than one outlet, so maybe they in particular are getting more traction somewhere else.

Very sad that Vox made the decision to try to quash communities though, and very happy that our community was stronger than that (THANK YOU THANK YOU to all the writers and patrons keeping this afloat).

Any news on who won the Big Fly contest? Who should we be congratulating?

If you’re looking for sports books, here’s my recommendations:

Bullpen Gospels
Out of My League: A Rookie’s Survival in the Bigs
Bigger than the Game: Restitching a Major League Life

Author Dirk Hayhurst wrote a great trilogy about his trials and tribulations getting from A ball (Cal League) to the Padres, and beyond, Some really great writing and lots of Inland Empire references in Bullpen Gospels.

Odd Man Out (Matt McCarthy)
Takes place during a season in the Angels’ rookie league squad. You’ll learn why Aybar is called Hot Dog.

Non-baseball book pick:
When Pride Still Mattered: Lombardi
If you’re a Packers fan, it’s definitely a must read. If you love football, it’s a must read. A great bio of the legendary Vince Lombardi.

Was Paris, perhaps, part of the reason that the Joc deal fell apart? Was he a prospect we didn’t want to part with? SS of the future – Simba’s eventual replacement? (I am really hoping we extend Simba, at some point in the hopefully shortened (rather than cancelled) season).

I don’t think we’ll ever know but I am partial to the idea that the Dodgers ended up wanting more than what had been agreed on and Arte pulled out because he didn’t like that idea.

I really hope that Edmonds gets his test, and he recovers from whatever he is suffering from (Corona or just super sick). But we need to make this testing much more prevalent and easy to get. It is the only way.

In another social media post, Edmonds said he wanted to “find out if I have been infected or just super sick. Not taking any chances because it is so hard to get tested by the rules of the CDC.”
