Angels blowpen causes Nats to sweep

The Walgreens team is a great trading partner for the Angels. They have such a good offense with abysmal pitching. Too bad they did not buy from the Angels at the deadline. Oh well. Shopping at the Walgreens farm would be cool.

What else was cool as that G-Rod did well again today. He went 5 and a third giving up 2 runs (one by the bullpen) on 7 hits, striking out 4 and walking 1. You take that against this offense. What you don’t take is the dropped ball that allowed that 2nd run. We need Nolan healthy ASAP.

Angels won the trade

Highlighted Recap

Ball continues to Ball as he hits his 9th home run of the year in the 4th inning.

1-0 Angels

Neto joined in on the fun in the 5th hitting his 26th of 2026.

2-0 Angels

But the Nats came back in the 6th as an rbi hit

2-1 Angels

And a failed double play allowed the game to get tied up

Tied game.

Angels bullpen allowing a run really sucks for the SP but that is all on Grissom. Yes, it is an er since you cannot assume a gidp but come on!

But finally the Angels offense did something again in the 8th as some walks and a sb by Neto and an error by the ss allowed for a wild pitch to bring home a run!

3-2 Angels

Add a sac fly and it is 2 runs in an inning without a hit.

4-2 Angels

Of course the Angels blow it immediately as Murphy allows back to back hits to start the 8th.

4-3 Angels

And a 3rd hit to tie the game again.

Tied again

And a 4th hit to give the Nats the lead

WHY WAS HE STILL IN THERE?!

Peralta came in and gave up a SB and a single to make it even worse.

6-4 Nats

Angels tried in the 9th. Getting a run but it cost 2 outs.

6-5 Nats

Too little. Too late. Angels get swept.

Upcoming

That was the last game outside of PDT this season. Last homestead coming up with Mariners and Twins.

Yes Trout had a hit but losing in this way makes it a sour day

Unfortunately, this is how they lose. Perry set the bullpen up to fail.

It is a far worse team now than we’ve ever seen before.

I was watching the Pandas finish off the Lookouts this afternoon, while Nimmala hit his seventh long ball in his last 11 games.

Was there a reason that Murphy was brought out for a second inning? He’s really not a multi-inning arm.

The reason is Kurt Suzuki.

An MLB TV subscription gets you all MiLB games. Put it on your Roku, you can cycle through A through AAA affiliates to your heart’s content.

Ah – got it. I already pay for so much streaming that I chose to skip MLB.TV

Keep Joyce and then shitcan the rest of the blowpen in the offseason. Every single one except Joyce is useless.

Samy Natera Jr – of the 1.90 FIP and 13.64 K/9 – would like a word. I’m not throwing him to the waves due to one bad Friday night.

LAA bullpen has actually led all of the MLB in FIP in the second half (tied for #4 in fWAR). This shaky stretch is pretty recent.

A lot of the newer guys – Watson, Weiman, Saucedo, even Fermin – have been pitching pretty well since the ASB.

I’m a Samy fan, not so much on Fermin

Fermin’s slider is elite – top 10% of MLB pitchers – guys are only hitting .182 against it. He misses a lot of bats, and induces a lot of groundballs. The FB command is an issue, but the velo is good.

He hasn’t been pitching long at all – a pop-up guy they signed for $10k after seeing him throw for an inning – he was almost 22 when they signed him.

He’s basically been a pro for only two years, and is has pitched 49 games this year with sub-4 ERA and fielding independent marks.

Seems like a guy you invest in.

Fermin gets a lot of needless crap on this website from folks just looking at the headlines on a bad outing but I think his pitching metrics have been pretty good and you just made me aware of another nice factoid.

Fermin gets the honor of being unjustly hated for whatever nonsensical reason even though his impact is a net positive.
“Neto sucks”
(until this year) “Detmers sucks”
“Rengifo sucks”
“Ward sucks”

Yeah, I would keep Natera, he has some improvement on his horizon. I would jettison Fermin.

I definitely wouldn’t jettison Fermin. YMMV – way too much good that’s under the hood for a guy who has only pitched in pro baseball at any level for two years.

Exactly, bullpen has been surprisingly good. Just keep integrating intersting arms and see what materializes.

I’s trade Joyce before the next boo-boo. You know it’s coming and just don’t want to stomach another 6-9 month rehab.
