Christmas in August as Klassen dominates Astros

I hate Houston. Not just because they are cheaters, but because they are Texas. Also they have a stupid zoning thing and it’s hot as hell. Point is, they suck and I am sick of their stupid baseball team getting away with winning the AL West. Yes, that’s in part due to the Angels being shitty in the last decade as well, but the rest of this pathetic division also let’s them win all the time.

So whenever the Angels win against the Trashos is a great day. And wins start with pitching. Today’s sp was George Klassen. He went 7 innings giving up no runs on hit striking out 7 and walking 3. Ace performance for the Angels again. When was the last time that the Angels had a good rotation?

Santa Klassen came to town

But you also need offense. Detmers can attest to that. Good thin by the Angels scored this time including a home run by Lowe. Despite all the hate, that’s now 10 hole runs from Lowe. Yeah it’s not a lot but on this team? That’s something.

Highlighted Recap

Guess who is 4th in sb on the Angels? Meckler! And he stole one in the 3rd.

I like Meckler

After a Trout walk, Nolan knocked Meckler in and the Angels scored first.

1-0 Angels

Angels got some defense this game as well as Neto made a great play this time, which would be shown all over if it was the Yankees in the 2000s.

No jump throw needed

With 2 outs in the th, Lowe added a 2nd run with a solo shot right into the Crawford boxes.

2-0 Angels

Neto also drove in a run today as he hit an rbi double in the 5th.

3-0 Angels

Klassen did excellent. 7 shutout innings. But then the bullpen came in for the 8th and immediately gives up a home run.

3-1 Angels

Luckily, Fermin settled down and Watson got through the 8th with the lead intact. After a fruitless 9th for the bats, Joyce came in to get the save. And he made it look easy. Angels win heir 50th of the season.

Upcoming

Angels face Houston for 2 more and then go up the road to Texas for 3. Last games vs those two teams this year.

Klassen has tantalizing talent. Sick breaking stuff with a 4 seamer that runs 96-97 mph?

Nice.

I hope we extend Reid and see consistency from Klassen and – hopefully – the next step forward by Dana. And I almost forgot that Bremner is perhaps two years away.

Positive signs.

Agree with most of this except for the last part ; Bremner is a helluva alot closer to being a Major League starter than two years away !

“Pickles” has had 2 very good to great starts back-to-back. Shanny now at .281. Neto 2 hits with a double and Lowe with an Angel HR (Nobody on) Joyce 2 K’s with a save.

In his last 7 games with the Guardians Jo Adell is 8-24 with 3HR and 11 RBI’s….

Anybody starting to regret that Jo trade yet ?

Nah. Jacob Cozart is hitting .314/.385./571 for the Pandas since the trade, and just hit his third HR in the same stretch Jo hit his three. He’s also handling the Pandas pitching staff well behind the plate – Austin Gordon held the MiLB’s most dangerous offense to two hits tonight with Cozart receiving.

One year of Adell in a lost lockout season for six years of Cozart? Seems like a great exchange to me.

This is fair and I probably agree.

The interesting part for me is watching how Adell performs over the next couple of years. It will answer the question once and for all: Is he a bit of an underachiever OR is he significantly better and only faltered because the Angels are run the DMV in the 1980’s?

I think Jo is gonna have a big season whatever his first full season in Cleveland is…. Probably 2028, but I think it’s on the way….Just hope Cozart actually makes it to the Bigs and produces at a starting catcher level ….

Yeah, I hope it’s a classic case where it works out well for all parties.

I hope so – I like Jo, and Jo deserves at least one year of outperformance on a contending team. That was not going to happen in his final year on the Angels.

Cozart was a second round pick in the 2024 draft. It’s a lot more than I thought the Angels would get for one year of Jo. He was actually selected three spots after the Angels picked Chris Cortez, and Cozart appears the superior prospect.

Robbing three HRs in a game wearing an Angel uniform should place him high in Angels lore for a long time. But he is batting .161 against right handed pitching since the trade. I think we did well in the trade.

I mean, that is true. And it is a good point. At the end of the day I think it is his struggles with right handed pitching that caused the Angels to give up on him… The work he put in on improving his defense has been impressive and that 3 HR rob game was indeed a thing of beauty…. He is a good guy and his talent has been tantalizing…. He is absolutely crushing left-handed pitching too ! On any given week when your team might be facing three or four left-handers he is definitely somebody you want in your lineup. Problem is, lefties comprise only about 25 % of the pitching population, so over the course of a full season you are only going to see a left-hander starter about 1 out of 4 games. Clearly, that is not likely to make Adell a good long term investment. But Cleveland seems willing to give him a regular starting spot.

JHW, the comments about Texas are uncalled for. A person can live comfortably in Houston if they have gills.

And the zoning thing is there so we Baptists can walk to buy a beer next door when we leave church on Sunday Morning.

thanks JHW. I love your recaps. Great videos too.

Meanwhile I hate having position players pitching, like the Mariners did tonight. Turned a 13-0 game into a 22-0 game. Those stats are skewed!

It does seem a bit dishonorable.

Terrible, I hate it as well. MLB should impose some fines putting position players on the mound without the intention of competing. Mariner pitchers were throwing lollipops.

How about JROD tonight. Bases loaded for the Brewers, up 19-0, and JROD catches a fly and fires it to the fans in the LF upper deck. Problem was, there was only 1-out. WTF. Down 19-0, it’s not your job to make fans happy, even if it was 2-outs. Mariners are a mess, Jedi’s job has to be on the hot seat.

It was 22-0.

Is that the largest margin of victory ever ? Could be. I can’t remember the last team an MLB scored over 20 runs… and to shut the opponent out as well !

Sheesh !

I saw a well played team win with tremendous pitching for the most part. The win keeps the Angels from losing 113 games. So there is that also.
