LA Angels Thursday News Crash

This article says that Detmers, Soriano, and Adell are potential trade chips but that who knows what might happen in view of the front office change. The article quotes Bob Nightengale as saying that Arte Moreno doesn’t want to trade those guys. The Angels got a couple of prospects into the All Star Futures Game. The Guardians released right-hander Pedro Avila. The Athletics just traded infielder Brett Harris to the Red Sox in exchange for minor league right-hander Ben Hansen. Vince Velasquez elected free agency. The Red Sox designated Tommy Kahnle for assignment.

Within our division, the Rangers placed Corey Seager on the injured list. The Tigers placed Will Vest on the injured list. The Red Sox placed Connelly Early on the Injured List.

Mozeliak told The Athletic’s Ken Rosenthal on Tuesday that he’s still formulating a Trade Deadline strategy, but he offered a hint at which way the organization might be leaning when asked if he thought the Angels needed to rebuild.
“No. I don’t think in this market you need to do that,” Mozeliak said. This team has resources. Now it’s just making sure we deploy them correctly.”

So they don’t need to rebuild. What resources is referring to and what does “deploy them correctly” mean. Is he talking about the proper spending of the budget or how current players on the roster are used, and if he’s talking about players, is he saying that Suzuki is deploying them incorrectly but they are not firing him.

His statement makes no sense and is very disappointing. It sounds like more of the same. And by the way, the current resources that he is referring to are 36-51, tied for 3rd worst in all of baseball.

You can say “There are other paths than a rebuild”, but you cannot claim you currently have the resources but they’re just not being used correctly. If you’re not planning on any sort of rebuild, be it soft or hard, then the only other option is to spend lot’s of money. I’m not sure that’s a viable option. JM is sounding like Perry.

He’s literally just the front man to appease the angry fanbase while Arte continues to dictate what the front office is allowed to do.

Moz also had an unceremonious end to his time in St. Louis. Is he better than Perry? Sure, yes. Will anything be different? Probably not.

Exactly. Perry’s firing was meat to throw to the people chanting “Sell the Team” at games, that is all. Nothing will change in the FO, it’ll be business as usual for Arte.

The team is one of the worst in baseball and has been for over a decade, while also having one of the worst farm systems. The market they are in will not somehow catapult them into contention. They need better drafting and coaching, and once that’s in place, only then should they focus on strategic free agency signings.

For some reason I’ll be at the game tomorrow night, first of season.

You just inspired my lead for Weekend Links. I need to look into a couple of things I think I know but might not first.

Also, I never trust what any front office person says around draft or trade deadline time.

I definitely agree with your last sentence. If he had just stopped after he said he was still formulating a strategy, that would have made perfect sense. I’m not saying a rebuild is the only way but what new deployment is going to take place with the current players or payroll budget.

Also he says “In this market, and “The team has resources”, which would imply that in this Market they should be able to afford to pay for players they don’t currently have to avoid a rebuild. They need bullpen pieces, and upgrades at C, RF, and 1B, if they want to compete in my opinion.

Also, if you’re deploying the players correctly, I would not be against Rada in CF, Siri in RF, and Trout at DH. Or maybe Meckler and Siri platoon in LF and t get a new RF, or Raudi platoons with someone in RF. These are all potential options.

What I wish they would do is use the rest of the season to evaluate what they have. In that vain, I would like to see Peraza, Guzman, Meckler, and Siri play everyday to determine if they are viable everyday players or bench players. They need to move Soler and Adell ASAP. And I would play Rada in CF and DH Trout when he returns.

I would have rather he said, ” I don’t know that yet. I’ve only been here three days and I’m not at the level that I can give you a definitive answer.”

It just sounds like Arte said “No rebuilds and don’t trade anybody worth trading.” so Moz needs to put the best face on it that he can.
