Reid Detmers is absolutely dealing right now. His last home start featured a career high in K’s. Last Friday he went six shutout up in LA. And tonight he had 7 innings of 1 hit, 1 run ball under his belt in under 90 pitches.
So of course MENSA candidate Kurt Suzuki pulled him and turned to the ever trust Angels bullpen.
Stop me if you’ve heard this one before: the bullpen did not hold up.
Things started off nicely when Mike Trout cracked a solo liner over the centerfield fence.
Life got even better for the Angels when Logan O’Hoppe showed some power.
The 2-0 lead did not last long. Detmers served up a solo home run to Shay Whitcomb in the top of the sixth. That was the only blemish on his ledger tonight. Yet again, Detmers was outstanding.
Like Monday the Angels bullpen needed to get 6 outs without giving up a run. They got zero. Chase Silseth served up a solo dinger to Cam Smith (who I wanted in the draft) to tie the score at 2-2.
Like Monday, a horrible defensive play led to a close play at the plate. This time, however, the Angels were able to corral an errant throw, O’Hoppe actually caught the relay, and made the out.
Like Monday the Angels and Astros had to play extra innings to prove who is the least worsiest.
To be fair to the bullpen, Sam Bachman and Ryan Zeferjahn both put up zeroes. Zef’s was in the top of the 10th which was critical and set the Angels up to win if they could just score the free runner.
A great bunt by Walton not only advanced the runner but turned into a hit. Jose Siri smacked a single to left, and the Angels won!
