Manoah is toast and the Angels have essentially no backup plan.
Klassen and Urena have looked far better. Even Silent C has.
The complete lack of depth on this team is apparent and it is still early March. July and August are going to be brutal.
The offensive numbers of the Angels starters so far are pretty good across the board. Plus some of the depth guys.
The hopium is hitting good right now!
Now, is there any pitching there?
It’s funny, since I’ve been closely following all the A’s games this spring (as my “study abroad” team). The knock on the A’s is that, while the young core can absolutely mash with the bats, the pitching is not there yet, and the depth may be a year or two out still. But their rotation looks pretty serviceable to me thus far, and reinforcements are coming quickly – most of the meltdowns have been with guys on the bubble hoping to find a place on the depth chart.
While the Angels bats have lit up this week, largely against minor league and NRI arms, I’m not sure about the sustainabillity of it vs more seasoned competition. (Still bottom three in the MLB in Ks.) But if they can manage a middling offense, the rotation situation looks pretty alarming. Manoah looked non-viable today, and Detmers and Soriano shaky to date. Rodriguez is still hunting for command.
It’s still ST, of course, but it’s a team ERA of 7.11 and WHIP of 1.71…and it looks it. The club is second-worst in walks. The Wild Bunch.
Raudi, Rada and Guzman all showing up here middle of spring.
Love to see it, since they’re really the only bats of note in the upper minors.
Guzman tags Arnold on a sweeper in – first run surrendered by Jamie this spring.
Command less in evidence in inning two for Arnold. Lots of movement, appears to be a little unsettled after the Guzman solo shot.
Edit: Solid recovery though. Sweeper worked against Kyren, inducing the whiff.
Wally Urena in and immediately starts rocketing 100 mph sinkers 😮💨
Urena and Klassen were the two AA guys last season I thought the Angels should continue the starter experiment with, given age and stuff. But both would be assets in the Angels pen right now, and inconsistency of command in longer stretches tends to expose both frequently. Can see that with Urena today, like Klassen this week. First inning they drop the hammer, and then get shaky past pitch 20.
Annnnddd, Urena gets 2 quick outs, starts walking batters, then gives up 3 runs, gets yanked.
The story of the farm right now – so much heat, so many arms that can work 97-101, so little length and command. Beyond Bremner and Dana, the upper minors are all relief profiles the Angels are trying to wishcast into six-inning guys.
More starter profiles in the lower minors, but even there, some of the ’25 prep draftees were clearly selected largely on FB characteristics.
I’ll give Manoah a DFA target of July. He is simply a placeholder until Dana is ready to take over 5th starter duties.
