question on fundamentals: do the Angels routinely send the 2b into position to back up the 1b on a ground ball to 3b?

Sometimes. I’ve seen them do it, I’ve seen them Lallygag. Most of the time it’s at 70%. It’s something I watch regularly. Rojas worked hard last night.

When it comes to fundamentals and the Angels, the default answer is: NO.

More stats:
Angels team error per game
2025: 0.60 (26th out of 30 teams; Boston was the worst)
2024: 0.60 (27th; Miami was the worst)
2023: 0.59 (23rd; Giants were the worst)

Today’s question:

Do the Angels have a single player who is better than a Dodgers player in the corresponding position?

So comparing 1B to 1B etc. (that one clearly goes in the Dodgers favor). This can include starting pitchers or bullpen pieces.

Can you name a single Angels player you would want over a corresponding Dodger player? Neto over Betts?

Neto is actually our only good player. Every year before this year, Betts was a far superior player. This year, they were close to equal in WAR with Betts being the slightly better defender and Neto the better hitter via slugging. I would take Jo Adell and Taylor Ward over their LF and RF.

Agree.
Especially in picking Ward over Conforto.

I cannot believe they did not trade for Jansen at the deadline, unless we refused.

No way Arte would help the Doyers.

Nor should he….

Of course he helped them by default in not extending Ohtani.

I’m not sure I’d agree re Adell and Jansen. The other two I can see your point.

I year is not enough re Adell.

Need to run a MLB team like a football team with coaches galore. No field managers without a HS diploma anymore like Sparky Anderson and Tommy Lasorda anymore or Old Rich Guys who wanna sell their team.

they also say this about football.

its not about the X’s and the O’s.
its about the Freddie’s and the Sho’s.

Please someone kick me in the nads. I had a few ohtani rc worth about 1600 at the time in 2020. Those same cards are valued at 15k. I could’ve bought so much more for cheap and didn’t.

I think my kid has a couple of Ohtani cards, I may have to check their value. He also has an unopened MLB The Show limited edition with Shohei on the cover.

That’s a cool item. Keep it sealed and get it graded. Ppl are loving the graded sealed games right now for some reason. All his cards are up insane value right now.

I just happen to know someone who grades items. This guy has the biggest collection of signed and unsigned baseball cards that I have ever even heard of, all cataloged, and also uploaded on his computer so he can go to it, tell you how many duplicates he has, and exactly where they are located. The guy is meticulous and focused. I think I’ll have him grade the game and my son’s cards. And no, he won’t grade things higher for friends, family, or even himself. It’s just how he is wired. Besides, he gets second, third, and fourth opinions on grading.

I told my son to keep the game sealed and hold onto it for at least 25 years and catch the “nostalgia value” market.

Looks like it’s worth about $30. Not bd but unlikely to help with retirement 😂

Great time to sell anything with Ohtani – market is super high.

Don’t feel bad, I was an old school collector, who made investment flops too. Guessing Ohtani RC card is one of those “chase/random insert” you can get a lucky pull like 1/500 packs opened, meaning it started at a high price. Way less than today, but even after first 2yrs meh with Angels it’s hard to predict how much better he got now with big shot LA. These $insert$ cards ruined collecting I grew up with, when you just bought packs looking for those rated rookies. I bought the shit out of premiere 89 Upper Deck, 1st premium baseball cards. Had multiple 9 pocket pages each of the Griffey, Sheffield, Jim Abbot. Sold everything I had to help with my first car. Can’t say how many Gregg Jeffries, Devon White and such RC cards I wasted money on. Glad I got out before the chase card era.

Brings back memories….Griffey Jr rookie was card #1 in the first UD set. But there was no rarity so, over time, the market crashed as the next generation was interested in the newest players.

Trout rookies are a good example. At one time it was the best card in baseball Now you cant give them away now.

Only the truly premium graded stuff (9.5 and above) of anything in last 30 years is worth really anything.

If you have anything of real value Ohtani-wise, sell while the market is hot. He is one TJ or major injury from a 50% correction in the market.

all those sixties Topps cards put into bicycle spokes to those first four HR balls Shohei hit out his first ever batting practice in the US in Tempe 2-14-18. smh. I had Nolie’s autograph once and that’s what I miss most. I collected in the 70s and sold what I had in the late 80s, and never got back into it.

I think I still have a couple copies of Beckets first hockey card publications and a few cards.

For sure.

Best advice I have ever received on anything of value from stocks to baseball cards is no one ever lost money taking a profit.

Those who wait for the highest possible value usually lose.

I was an avid sports collector in the late 80’s, vintage singles, buying and flipping cases of 1989 Upper Deck, 1989 Score Football and 1989-1990 OPC Hockey. Easy scores. Used to set up a table at the small/big conventions, selling away and seeing the stars come in for autographs, great times. Lucrative until saturation and hobby bottomed out around 1994-95.

I had the foresight to buy 1982 Topps Traded Cal Ripken cards, 3-4 years before he broke the record for consecutive games played. $3-4 dollars, flipped for $250. UD 1989n Griffeys flipped $7 to $50. These were all cherry picked, mint. Still sitting on a a large number of Gwynn, Boggs and Sandberg’s. Also, still have a brick of 1989 UD John Smoltz and Big Unit rookies all mint, ain’t worth much unless graded, even then, so-so. I was into buying second year HOFers, like Mays, Aaron, Clemente, Ryan, Rose etc….cheeper to buy and price steadily rose throughout the years. Made money, sold everything. Missed on Mantles. Something about vintage baseball cards that appeal to me much more that new ones with their manufacture scarcity, which turns me off.

My biggest oops was not investing in basketball. 1986-1987 Fleer Basketball, packed with rookies and with the prize, Michael Jordan. A wax box could have been had for $100 which now goes at auctions around $100-150K. I used to walk by tables at conventions selling boxes and could get cases through the mail (pre-internet). I should have swooped up on cases of that stuff. Shit. Jordan is the GOAT of GOATs. Shohei is definitely moving up.

Ripken Topps traded was a great card, I had a few Strawberry 83 Topps traded, which is worthless now. Yes basketball, Jordan Fleer could been had for $25 before Beckett basketball came out. After, I refused to pay $300 for Jordan. Some dealer paid me good cash for off brand Star basketball cards, an 84 Olympic set and Gatorade slam dunk set, both included Jordan’s. If you were a dealer I may have seen you back in the day, went to so many large and small shows late 80’s.

Yeah, very likely. I really caught the bug, this was all pre-internet where the weekly Sports Card Digest was the primary way to read about ongoings in the hobby, other than going to shows. I was every weekend at some show; LA to OC, buying stuff and setting-up a booth 4-5 times a year at a med-big convention. I used to have the Chicago Bears Old Style Beer banner outside my two-three tables. A buddy of mine stole that from a vendor at Soldiers Field. LOL, the banner served as a good marker for folks to find me.

$25 for Jordan rookie, that is just wild. Very nice. Star basketball really got hot and trendy. I still have some Star singles, no Jordan’s sadly. Star were pretty cool cards, simple but clean. In my garage, I still have the first ever Beckett Grading booklet with Jordan on the cover. LOL. Man, pains me that I missed his cards. The only thing I got going on is that I am slowly building a Ex-Mint 1971 Topps set. My all-time favorite year and card design, black borders…tough.

I still have the Olajuwon Star RC both as a single and in an unopened team set. I think it will go up over time as Hakeem is undervalued — he was a much greater player than most mainstream media give him credit for..He is a Top Three player All Time in my book. And I have very distinct criteria for what constitutes greatness…. Hint, it is not simply ring counting.

I can’t believe I watched the whooole thing. It was the craziest game in the World Series since Reggie went out and hit 3 HRs in one game. Shotime was on base 9 times-insane. I was fading when Freeman launched the game winner and by that point, I didn’t care who would win. And who was this Klein pitcher? Kershaw comes in with bases loaded and gets out of the inning; we thought he was going to be the sad sack. What a heck of a game-soo glad for no ghost runner(s). Fans in Eastern Canada and Western New York will be dragging their feet at work today, it ended at 3 am back there, Holy Geez lunch today will be a nap. 🛌 💤

Great game. Historic. Also, I thought the Fox announcers, including John Smoltz, did an excellent job. They were funny in several spots, interesting and were spot on on some of their analysis.
Ohtani is a freaking beast, it there were a baseball league above mlb, he would be an all star in it also.
I still almost can’t comprehend that a player of Ohtani’s incomparable skills once played for the sad sack Halos.

I agree with all of your post. I never thought that I would see anyone as good my childhood heroes Mantle, Mays, Aaron, Clemente, Yaz, Koufax, until Trout arrived and then he was the GOAT, but not I think it is Shotime. Davis and Smoltz in the last 5 innings were as good as it gets. Great game with relief pitching that was awesome baby-just awesome (Dickie V.)

Trout is a 2-way player, but again so is Shohei, and Arte wasted both of them with nothing in return.

I was talking with my wife during last night’s game and we’re happy that Ohtani landed somewhere where greatness matters. He had done great things in Anaheim and would have still been amazing in Anaheim but the team still would have sucked.

Angels fans crying about Dodger blue buying championships is the worst kind of hypocrisy. Angels fans didn’t care about that stuff when Autry was emptying out his saddlebags in the 70s/80s and wouldn’t care now if situations were reversed. I would love see a salary cap but until that never happens, blame the system, not those smart enough to exploit it.

Shhh… Dodgers must be envied, nee hated due to being”mean” to the beloved Cowboy, as they actually expected him to pay for his use of their stadium while he waited for Anaheim/Disney City to bend over and build him a nice facility. And look at all the bunched panties and pearls clutched over Vlad Jr., somehow “belonging” to us because he played catch in the outfield while his mercenary baseball-gifted father chose the dollars Cheap Arte dangled.
