Midweek game with the kids back in school = cheap tickets and plenty of ability to move closer.

It was only an easy out to LF. He’s not back.

and he won’t be but we’ll take what we can get and a sac fly to go ahead at this point is a good thing….because it wasn’t a K which would have left us still 3-3

Gotta have the worst outfielders in the league.

Remain a little baffled that they keep running out Fermin and Peralta over legit prospects like Bachman and Silseth, or interesting newcomers like Natera Jr and Southard.

When the Angels love you (Jose Suarez), they will keep playing you until you no longer can play in MLB.
Your performance is irrelevant.
Rengifo is Angels’ current love interest

Well, Rengifo hit .261/.358/.420 last month, so there’s at least some performance data justifying the usage, and not much of a pipeline to replace him, unless they want to test Guzman.

The bullpen is just a case where they have a ton of homegrown replacements – all in AAA – ready to be tested in an MLB environment. And the late season stakes are low, so it’s an ideal time to test them and see what the team has for next year.

The Halos need to tie up Neto long-term, but I can’t even begin to imagine how Arte’s going to entirely **** that up.

I have a sincere question as I haven’t been able to be on the blog regularly this season.
Why is it that seemingly every mlb team has at least one promising young pitcher they have drafted and developed? Meanwhile Ferris looks promising but he was drafted and developed by the Braves (who happen to be good at that sort of thing).

With all of the high picks the Halos have had in the last decade, you would think there would be one pitcher with a high upside. Detmers was a top ten pick iirc, and as usual, has topped out as a reliever. There was the one draft where they drafted a pitcher in every round. This seems extraordinary. I wonder if the problem is that guy in the photo who is pointing right at me (Perry) or a mediocre scouting system, or having to save slot money by drafting a player rated between 12 and 18 with the No. 2 overall pick. Is that just ‘the Angels being the Angels’?

It irks me that they try every year to get cute with the slot money. Pick good players for cryin’ out loud! Yeah they cost money. You get what you pay for.

But they really aren’t penny-pinching in the draft. They consistently spend all of their draft pool, and outspend other teams. And they often spend full slot on relievers like Chase Shores. Meanwhile, they spend crazy overslot on prep arms.

It’s not about getting cute at the top – most teams do that. It’s about who they select with the money they’ve got. They prioritize expensive prep pitching and relievers, largely avoid polished starter profiles and outside of a first rounder here and there, cut deals on low probability college bats (or steer clear of them entirely).

What was theory this year with the very low ranked guy they drafted in the first?

I did my level best to answer this question when you asked it yesterday:

https://crashingthepearlygates.com/2025/09/09/la-angels-tuesday-news-crash-adell-pow/#comment-440864

Short answer: he wasn’t a “low ranked guy” – he was a very highly ranked guy who came in to the season as the best pitcher in college ball according to many outlets (BA, D1, Perfect Game), and then was ranked as one of the top five arms in college ball going into draft day.

So you either dock him for 3-4 poor outings at the beginning of the season while his mother was dying, or you look at the longer track record, and value him on that. The Angels did the latter, and more than one source suggests the Mariners were looking to grab him at #3 had the Angels selected Anderson first.

Thanks Turk! Yeah, that makes perfect sense to me, even though we clearly both agree with it. It’s sad to see players like Neto, Schanuel and Adell have to be put in a position whereby, unlike other teams…. most of whom have at least one ace that can lock down a game to eliminate long slumps.
I appreciate your explanation.

No problem.

And to drive this home further – of the first 20 draft picks in the 2025 draft, 14 were signed for amounts under the allotted slot value.

It’s not unusual to do so – and in fact, in this draft, it was status quo. First round slot values have grown very high, and the top of this draft wasn’t viewed as having the ceiling of other drafts.

I can’t actually watch the game. What set Ryan Goins off? Balls and strikes?

Yes.
Multiple missed calls. Including a strike where entire baseball was in zone and called a ball

Rengifo doing what he does best, hurting the angels.
And they reward him by continually putting him in lineup.
Mutual self assured destruction
