LA Angels Wednesday News Crash: Perry the Genius

Good morning Angels fans! Have some links!

Angels News

The Angels won again last night in Extras against the Sux. Series won, going for the sweep in a day game.

Big reason for that has been Christian Moore, who did the whole “barely play in the minors” thing before coming up and playing in the majors. It has been the Angels’ thing and right now it seems to be working. Remember, the Angels have the 2nd overall Pick this draft. Perhaps we see him this September.

Bad News. Neto hurt. Left game with a shoulder injury. Begin to panic.

Around Baseball

Whit Merrifield has retired. The Kansas City Royal, Blue Jay, Phillie, and Brave is only 36 but has decided to be a dad instead of play anymore.

How many times has each team been .500 this season? For some, it is 0, because they lose too much. Others are also 0 because they win too much. For the Angels, it is 6. A normal amount.

The Sneks get their Stadium money. Not a new stadium, but Stadium repairs. The place is not even 30 years old, how does it need repairs?

Angels bullpen may be better now, but it was so bad for so long that their ERA is still HORRIBLE. I mean, look.

Been Top 5 in the past 30 days though.

When does heckling get too personal? Ketle Marte was being heckled at during a game last night that brought him to tears. The subject? His dead mom. Fan was ejected.

This team is very entertaining, and it’s been so many years since we could say that. Their record might not reflect it in the end, but more nights than not, they are in the game. I’ve found myself watching even when they’re down by multiple runs because there’s still a chance they’ll come back. We have pitchers working out of tough jams. We have hitters getting clutch 2-out hits. And we have the whole “who’s gonna be the hero tonight?” vibe going. Glad I’m on summer break and can watch the day game today. Broom Boston! Sweep the Sux!

Love hitting Moore 2nd today after a big game and while he is raking.. Granted Neto being out almost necessitates the move but this is the same thing that should have happened with Paris (when he was red hot and we had no leadoff hitter) earlier in the year. Not sure if this is a Montgomery move or Perry’s call but the lineup should always be constructed in a what have you done for me lately recency data fashion IMO. Hope the kid stays hot. Also not playing KP at SS instead of Kingery is awful.

He could also go 0-4 hitting 9th.. Still the right move IMO. It’s funny that volume of sample size is usually the argument used for not changing a lineup, but on the reverse we can use a 1-2 game sample for determining that a change was wrong.

We’ve been misled.

Guys who can throw as hard as Soriano and Kochanowicz with any kind of control on a starter’s workload are quite rare. They just haven’t figured out how to miss bats. Given the same thing happened to Joyce, it’s worth monitoring Cortez and Klassen as they move up the ladder, because it’s possible this problem is systemic.

Interesting read. Thanks for sharing

I think Moore does a better job in moderating his swing.
Not too many people swing for the fences at every swing like Paris does.
Alfonso Soriano comes to mind.

It’s true. I miss the days when face punching was a thing. It made for a polite society. Having been around and worked in bars over a long period, it’s really jarring how a guy who was doing XXX ten years ago would get punched in the face and everyone including said guy kind of understood it. Now that same guy gets punched in the face and everyone including the guy reacts like someone lit a puppy on fire.

The worst thing is that the special little boy doing the offending thing almost never sees that what he’s doing is leading up to a solid punch in the face, even when he’s told he’s gonna get face punched. Back in the day you kinda had a sense that you were cruisin for a bruisin. That’s just vanished now.

I sell commercial trucks in Oregon and deal with some customers in the logging industry. That’s still a world where if two guys don’t like each other, they square off and sort it out. Most times, they shake hands afterwards and sometimes even grab a beer. I’ve never heard of police reports or lawsuits and it’s pretty refreshing to see.

It fits my long running narrative that a common theme to many of societies ills is that too many fourteen year old kids never got the opportunity to have their asses kicked.

I did, mostly deserved it and I’m better for it. My struggle in life is that I haven’t figured out to beat someone down in a loving Christian manner. It causes me much grief and consternation because I know they need it.

Well. I don’t want to beat anyone up because I’m old and my hands already hurt. In general, we don’t have to go THAT far, you can still be firm yet polite and ask a guy to stop yelling what he’s yelling.

I just did it at the A’s game I was at. It was awkward but fine and it worked. Guy did a little shit talking because he was embarrassed but then shut up and avoided eye contact the rest of the game. All good as long as I didn’t get all chesty about his shit talking.

It’s not like we have to be al Jimmy Hero Hands and beat a guy up cause he’s a prick. Just use shame and then don’t get your ego involved when they give the response you know their feelz require of them.

That is mostly in jest as the days of me raising my hands in violence are hopefully/thankfully done. I do remember a guy many years ago in Seattle when the Angels were in town repeatedly loudly yelling “SALMON YOU SUCK!” even before the game had started. Not wanting to sit through three hours of that, I jeered him by saying Salmon you suck is all you got? His name is Salmon and he has to play games in New York and Boston where fans say things that would make a hooker blush and all you got Salmon you suck? C’mon try harder! Many of the nearby fans, Mariners included had a laugh and we didn’t hear another word from him.

I am very much liking these kids and I think there is real potential. It makes this upcoming draft a possible difference maker. Hit big on the #2 and #47 and this team could really be good (like playoffs good) in a couple years.

Gotta be realistic though. I’ll be happy if those two picks do some good for us at some point. It doesn’t HAVE TO BE next year, for example.

Thus, we should trade for some AA prospects this year and accept the losses that come with that.

Angelz4ever

Jensen can/should be traded for three reasons (Besides strengthening the team in the future) even if we are “Vying for a WC spot”:

  1. Detmers can close if necessary and is under team control for a while
  2. Certainly the return will be nice, especially if Perry can horse trade with Philly again.
  3. D@mit, no Halo prospects should be wasted in any band-aid move for waiver fodder.

I’d like to see the Halos net a good 3B MiLB player for Jensen.

gitchogritchoffmypettis
Legend
Reply to  Angelz4ever

Jansen’s a good test case. Right now he has negative trade value, according to the computers because of money and plenty of comparably better arms doing his job. BUT I think he’ll be more valuable than that to someone out there.

He’s not netting a top 3B prospect though. If PTP gets that for Jansen we need to extend him for ten years the next day.

Angelz4ever
Super Member

No way in Hell Jensen is negative trade value-There may not be buyers (Right now), but when the PS picture becomes clearer, for for real contenders, Jensen as a closer or set-up man will be in demand and someone will pay.

A lot of us thought our last two traded away relievers weren’t that valuable. Perry has got some high value returns on some dish water Halo hurlers.

gitchogritchoffmypettis
Legend
Reply to  Angelz4ever

Last I checked, yes indeed, he has a negative trade value via Brainiac’s measurements. So we’ll see if some GM out there hates the data and wants to give us a lot for him.

Anderson also has a negative value. And Rengifo.

Just gonna drop this fly from Bob Nightengale into your soup.

Everyone with the sell mindset needs to come to terms with the fact that we don’t have many assets that will bring back the desired return of “good AA prospects”.

Ward and Jansen. That’s it, that’s the list lol. Both of whom are guys I’d be fine trading whether we were 30-50 or 50-30

gitchogritchoffmypettis

Yup. we may get one 50 grade prospect out of the whole sheebang. Likely a whole bunch of 45 grade guys…. who we then have to hope we can develop.

And pen arms like Zeferjahn.

Sadly, our position players on the farm are so bad we actually need this injection of meh.

I’m not advocating buying but I’m also worried about the affect on telling the team they’re just not good enough by selling major pieces off even though they’re within >3 games of a playoff spot with few teams ahead of them. Seems like a good way to assure the kids think 2x about re-upping and strike against the team when pursuing FA’s.

For those saying we should be shooting to compete in 202X, health isn’t a given so who’s to say we wont look like the 2025 O’s in 202X.

Last edited 22 days ago by SchofieldsWalkoff

It’s not really a worry because the team just isn’t good enough. even if they feel good, they are not really good and if they are smart they’d like to actually BE good someday.

The idea that we have to protect the self esteem of a team that is middling at best or they may not stay middling so that maybe they will stay semi-middling later would piss me off if I were a player….

On the other hand, I listen to ex-players online all the time. Their position seems to be that owners all need to extend everyone for a lot of money, trade for even better and more expensive players at the deadline, show the fans they care by signing expensive players and draft and develop well.

And just do that every year. Even if you are a sub-.500 team.

So maybe players are stupid enough to demand a shot at kissing the unicorn, future be damned.

SchofieldsWalkoff

You’ve said repeatedly they’re just not good enough but if they win today, they’re on pace to finish 2-20 games better than most of the smart/insider people predicted.

At what point does actual results surpass projected results?

As far as your middling statement, I’d personally go with people are people and want to be shown support by those in charge when they’re achieving the goals put in front of them and not have the goal post moved.

Since ST the kids through management all said the goal was to get to the playoffs and so far they’ve put themselves in a decent position to get there.

These guys are hyper competitive so of course they believe they’re never out of it and don’t care about next year when there’s a chance this year.

Im looking for more info, but I was able to watch the Corona vs St John Bosco game a month ago and that kid Trevor Heishman absolutely dominated that lineup, out pitched Seth Hernandez. Big lefty 6-4 230 throwing mid 90s. I think he’s a Memphis commit. Would love if they can sneak him there somewhere

Draft – get Aiva or Ethan, then pick college arms Rounds 2-5.

This is opposite of what Mr. Teeth spells out yesterday (get Kade, then get college bats). Either way, I’m not too worried about #2, but I see #47 as crucial to how fast we can rise again.

my thinking is there will be a decent pitcher at #47, but not so much on the bat side. Any thoughts on the pitching that would be available at #47?

Weelllll…. Gage Wood, Kade Obermueller, Anthony Eyanson, Marcus Phillips those are the top college arms available around there in the draft. Maybe Zach Root falls that low?

If we go that rout we can’t do the “we never draft an ace” rout of complaint the next season. All of those guys have “solid sub-4.00 ERA” written all over them. They could get better in the minors. But as far as a guy who is cooking for us in 2027, not likely.

No rule that you can’t draft two pitchers with your first two picks. Take Anderson, Arnold, Witherspoon, whichever one, at #2 and maybe Jacobs at #47 if he is available.
Trade for best MiLB 3b in AA if we can.

Not the worst idea…. I’d be more in favor of it if a player like Ward were hitting .300 with all those home runs. To get a really high end 3B prospect we’d need a guy with more trade value than what we have now.

So long as Christian Moore can maintain a batting average in the 200+ range and not strike out at 35%+, we might as well let him finish the season up here. Most of our starters are .200+ hitters anyway.

Basically, if he doesn’t go Karen Paris, play the kid.

Exactly. Give him some rope. But one hour of MLB success doesn’t mean he isn’t overmatched. Hell, he’s striking out like Paris BEFORE all the pitchers get a book on him (which is what murdered Paris).

Does that mean he can’t make fast adjustments and suddenly K at a sub-30% rate? No. Is it likely? No reason to be sure it is. So let him play and see what happens I guess, but I’m not gonna be apoplectic if he gets sent down in a couple weeks either. That’s OK.

100% – I think they are building something. We’d have a very high ranked minor league system if we brought guys up at the pace of other teams. Now if it were me, and I wasn’t going to try an under-slot maneuver to land someone else. I have to lean toward Anderson – and that’s having seen live Liam Doyle look absolutely dominant against Vandy. It just looks easier. I also like the idea of under-slotting Gage Wood. The swing and misses from great hitting teams are huge. Hernandez seems to be shooting up the ranks – so he’s unlikely as the prize unless he were to give a home team discount. Hard for him to say to a team – nah – I’m going to Vandy for three years and not taking your millions and be believable.

Totally agree with you on the rest issue Bluto. I have been saying this for years on this site … I have talked about how “Load Management” has become a thing in the NBA going back to Popovich not taking some key veterans on road trips (thus they miss not only the game or games but the flights which if you have ever travelled alot for work know take alot out of you..)…

As a result of the NBA trend MLB teams began to rest guys more in season. I think this is REALLY important, perhaps more mentally than physically even, though both are important. The team is clearly doing this with Logan right now and catchers of course need more rest than other position players. I suspect Logan’s second half numbers will be much better than last year as a result.

As far as Neto, hard to say how much this is “wear and tear” related until we know exactly what the injury or issue is. But suffice to say, overuse and lack of rest is known to cause injuries and pain/soreness in workout and exercise culture so …….

Society. I would like to live in a nation where, in general, a person can have thoughts and even make statements that I hate. I dislike the mob mentality “do, make, say, think our shiny feel good morals” thing. It’s gross.

BUT I also want to live in a place where just about everyone from a Nazi to an Anarcho-Communist will be sitting at a baseball game, listening to some drunk asshole yell at a player about his dead mom, and come together in harmony to tell the guy to STFU or they’ll kick the shit out of him.

But there’s just too much risk of arrest, law suits, crazy guy clobbering your kids, social media turning on you because of the color of the combatants skins or who they like to kiss or what ever…. it’s probably best if we just all keep our heads down and our eyes on our feet and just let the aggressively dickish do their thing.

But it’s hard to imagine a guy at a Tigers game in Detroit in 1984 getting away with that. Too many people have moms. What’s really sad is in 1984 the guy yelling at Marte would have been likely to rethink his behavior and shut up. Now he’s more likely to just act out in a worse way…. after all, he’s probably on camera and we all have to perform. Can’t look weak.

The Ketel Marte story is just unbelieavable. Jeering a player by referencing his mother who died in a car accident. These are human beings in front of us playing baseball.

Yeah, agree. Talking about a players family or children clearly crosses the line. There are other things that I think would cross it, but family stuff is off limits as far as I am concerned.

The suicide heckle a little while back would also be crossing the line ….

Yet fans say terrible things about opposing players mothers all the time . I’m sure this isn’t the first time Ketel had heard this type of insult . Hell the league might as well ban travel to New York if they really want to stop this shit. Anonymity fueled by liquid courage creates some pretty terrible behavior in people .

The Angels win a game they have no business winning. It’s time that kind of karma finally favor the Angels.

Everyone is celebrating CMo as the hero, and rightly so. But special kudos to the pitching staff (yes, that includes Tyler), who also kept the Sux at bay while the Angels were flailing against an undisputed ace. Kept the Sux scoreless until someone finally sneaked one(or three) against their bullpen.

Give all your firstborns for Neto’s health!!! 🙏🙏🙏

Why do you say we had “no right” to win that game? We are an MLB team taking the field against another MLB team, and it is OUR home field no less ! The game is anybody’s for the taking until it is decided !

Just hassling you. I also thought this would be a loss with Crochet up against Anderson. But I still watched with hopefulness… Hopefully we won’t blow yet another chance for a sweep today…. we seem to have a really hard time finishing off sweeps. We have only succeeded one time in our last four chances for a sweep.

We were only down 1-0. Hardly an insurmountable deficit that required a miracle and three Hail Marry’s (plus a few errors) to overcome.

The Angels & Red Sox are peer competitors and the records reflect this reality.

The present looks decent and the future looks bright if you have good eyesight.

Last year, the Angels record at this same point in time was 32-46. My point was more that the Angels are finally winning the types of games they just used to weakly roll over in prior years. How many times did we say that when the opposing team scores first, and they have their ace on the mound, it’s “game over.”? They’re a much better team this year and little improvements like this show that.

Yes, I agree that your record is who you are, but despite the close record, Boston’s offense is still better than the Angels this year:

BOS – .248/.323/.418, 4.71 RPG, 8.61 HPG
LAA – .226/.291/.403, 4.22 RPG, 7.51 HPG

So that’s why I gave kudos to the Angels entire pitching staff who went toe-to-toe with their ace. And after Crochet, Weissert and Chapman weren’t exactly chopped liver either.
