LA Angels Weekend News Crash: Holding Pattern

If you are hoping for tons Angels news this week, you might as well stop reading right now. The only really notable news to come out of Anaheim is that there will not be much news until the other 29 owners approve Arte’s sale to Kroenke.

In some minor news, the Angels made the easy decision to decline Robert Stephenson’s $2.5 million option to not pitch last year. Overall, the dude picked up $33 million to pitch a handful of games in 2025 but none in 2024 or 2026. Solid move, Perry.

And the team lost Kyren Paris to the NY Mets, which is as close to staying with the Angels as you can get.

In one piece of fun news, the team added Nicolo Pinazzi who has a great back story and pitched the longest stretch of scoreless innings in the minors last season.

As for when the other owners will let Kroenke join the club, Mozeliak said that would be in two weeks but then Jeff Fletcher refuted that claim.

So there will be Angels news at an undetermined time in the future. Stay tuned?

Meanwhile, the list of free agents the Angels should avoid at all costs is now out. Signing a free agent with a Qualifying Offer attached at this stage of the rebuild would be horribly stupid.

But once the action picks up, how much cash will the new front office have to blow? Yes, that was step one to getting our off season pieces rolling. Expect them next week.

To help you get started, here are the projections from both MLBTR and, of course, FanGraphs.

That number might not seem like a ton, but I think the Angels bullpen could be revamped for $20 million.

Yeah, there’s not much to do right now expect hope for some shiny new presents this off season. So for once I don’t feel too bad about loading up my links here.

Strikeouts are a huge problem for the Halos. Here are two outfielders with low K rates that won’t break the bank.

Defense was also a huge problem, particularly in left field, so maybe Ian Happ and his 4 Gold Gloves could help?

And time for a text break. Jake Munroe looks like he’s going to be my next favorite player. Kid is looking good out in the desert.

We need a backup catcher. So I had a college catcher tell me who he thinks fits the rebuild.

Almost certainly using this in my off season piece. J.P. Crawford makes a ton of sense for second base.

But does KBO stud Si-Hwan Roh solve the team’s third base problem? Considering that is only a problem until Munroe arrives, what should the Angels do at the hot corner?

Perhaps the team continues to tear down and rebuild. This is a horrible free agent class, especially for first base, and several contenders need help at the cold corner. That adds up to Schanuel having more value than in the past.

Personally, I would cash in on that value and send him to the Snakes for a nice little prospect package.

Even if the team does continue to cash in some trade chips, signing young talent to long term deals would make sense. NBP ace Kaima Taira is on the Angels radar but should they sign him?

And, finally, congrats to Mike Trout and Zach Neto for being named finalists for the Silver Slugger Award.

I started tracking Trout’s path to a Silver Slugger in August and am glad to see it happen. Pretty sure that was my first piece to get picked up by Yahoo!, who now has an agreement to recycle SI content.

Enjoy your weekend and link what I missed. I’ve been traveling back to back weekends, lived through a house repipe job and two new shower builds/installations, and finally have a weekend at home with a fully functional home. I’m not going anywhere. Stater Bros. has tri tip on sale and I have plenty of charcoal and mesquite, plus s’mores stuff for the fire pit. A quiet weekend at home with my family is going to be gorgeous.

Jeez the free agent class is rough. After Skubal, the next crop of pitchers are projected to pitch at ERAs/FIPs between 3.8 and 4.3.

There has never been a better time to trade Detmers.

I’ve come fully around on trading Neto and Detmers. Moz made the correct decision holding on to them thru the deadline because now they’re arguably the best trade candidates in an offseason with a stupid weak FA market.

My expectations for 2027 will be directly correlated to the Budget KSE gives us. I hope way north of $225 million

It doesn’t matter much to me when the transfer date is. Anytime before February is fine by me. I’m sure lots of stuff is going on in the background and KSE is pulling all the strings anyway now. Example- a few days after Moz said he’d bring him back, Zuk is gone.

It’s a great weekend for college football 🏈

I was on the fence about the Kings new alternate jerseys but seeing them on the ice now? Wow 🤩

Like the tri tip idea this wknd JJ. I prefer the Ralph’s USDA choice cut when on sale, trimmed of course. Got my Santa Maria seasoning. Charred then slow cook on grill. Don’t have a smoker like some of the ‘pros’ do !

I have a smoker but have never smoked a tri-tip. I’ve always been worried its too lean and would get dry. Does it turn out ok?

I do the same as oldskoll. Hard sear then indirect heat until midrare-medium.

J P Crawford is an excellent suggestion at the price you mention. We don’t have a 2B anywhere close in the organization, I might look at 3 years for a cost controlled solid defensive player who is a 10% better hitter than Grissom. That sounds like an excellent upgrade and someone that could also have trade value at anytime. That’s the first addition I’ve heard that I like.

Crawford has to be on a lot of Angels “If I Were GM” bingo cards. How to get it done. He’s been in PHI and SEA, coming to CA is going to increase his taxable income. We aren’t a desirable location at the moment. Maybe we have to overpay a bit? Do you think 1 year, $12M, plus a $12M mutual option for 2028 gets it done?

Career Stats at Angel Stadium (Road vs. Angels)

• Games Played: 57
• Batting Average: .263
• Hits: 56
• Home Runs: 5
• RBIs: 24
• Runs Scored: 35

Been decent in high leverage hitting and with RISP. Tends to hit better in the middle innings than early or later in games.

All true. Just lots to consider for club and player. Trade clause? If he “comes home” does he want to stay for a year or two or would he be willing to be shipped out? Unlimited playing time here due to no depth v going to playoff contender and a somewhat small role (playing 110 games vs 150 here).

49ers overpaid for Kyle Juszczyk at the FB position 10 years ago. A player like fit their leadership and play style. Only bringing that up because if you identify JP as being a good clubhouse guy and productive player, maybe overpay market to get him. LA, not OC, is much different and I’d bet JP self identify the former as home.

Love me some smoked (Oklahoma Joe grill not a Cheatin’ Treager!) tri tip. Smoking this year’s Thanksgiving bird on it too! If the real estate gods are ever so kind this holiday season, check out The Meat Palace off Warner/Springdale for some of the best cuts.

If they don’t take up the Angels sale in the November meetings then they most likely won’t take it up until Mid to late January. Not the greatest timing but if there is no baseball and a lockout it doesn’t matter.
