Sunday Defeat Of Reds

It was Ace Day! The Angels pretty much brutalized the Reds to win this series. Soriano’s ERA is now 0.33. When was the last time you heard that about an Angels starter? Sam Bachman had a rough day to almost give it away in the bottom of the eighth. Sandlin also tried to give it away.

Inning 1

Trout, Adell, and Grissom singled to set the plate. Nolan Schanuel singled to score two. 2-0 Angels.

Then Logan O’Hoppe singled to make it 3-0 Angels.

The Reds did nothing effective. Zach Neto made sure of that.

Inning 2

Zach Neto walked and Mike Trout doubled him in. 4-0 Angels.

Jo Adell singled Trout over to third where Trout was hit by a foul ball. Sheesh! Jorge Soler hit a sacrifice fly to score Trout. 5-0 Angels.

Once again the Reds did nothing that scored.

Nobody did anything of merit in the third inning.

Inning 4

Oswald Peraza homered to make it 6-0 Angels.

Bryce Teodosio walked to put a man on for Zach Neto. Kyle Nicolas came in to replace Andrew Abbot. Teodosio stole second base after a successful challenge.

Zach Neto walked. Mike Trout walked on four straight pitches to load the bases with no outs. Jo Adell grounded into a force out at third to score Teodosio. 7-0 Angels.

Then while Vaughn Grissom was batting Nicolas threw a wild pitch over Grissom’s head to advance the runners. Grissom flied out to end the Angels fourth. It was still 7-0 after the Reds batted.

Several of the Angels padded their batting stats in the fifth inning but they didn’t get another run.
The Reds still couldn’t do anything.

Brock Burke came in to pitch against the Angels in the sixth. The Angels couldn’t score. Soriano set the Reds down on only four pitches.

Inning 7

Logan O’Hoppe hit a one out double to put a man in scoring position for Peraza. Peraza grounded out to second and it scored O’Hoppe. 8-0 Angels.

The Reds only managed one walk.

Inning 8

Zach Neto singled and Mike Trout hit into a force out. Sam Moll tried a pickoff play that resulted in an error and Trout advancing to second base. Jorge Soler walked. Vaughn Grissom reached on catcher interference. Nolan Schanuel walked to make it 9-0 Angels.

Now Sam Bachman came in to pitch in the non-save opportunity. T.J. Friedl did manage a walk and advanced to second on defensive indifference. Elly de la Cruz singled to put runners at the corners with two outs. Sal Stewart singled to center and scored a run. 9-1 Angels. Will Benson walked to load the bases. Bachman threw a mega wild pitch that scored two more Reds. 9-3 Reds. Bachman walked Nathaniel Lowe and was removed in favor of Nick Sandlin. He got his man out.

The Reds got two on with an error and a base hit. T.J. Friedl got hit by a pitch to load the bases. Drew Pomeranz came in to replace him. Oswald Peraza got an unassisted double play on a liner to third. Two outs. Elly de la Cruz hit a three run homer to make it 9-6 Angels. Sal Stewart struck out. Angels won 9-6. Whew!

There’s a level of training that Mike Maddux is giving Kurt. If you pay attention Maddux is always chatting to Kurt when the inning is over or when they or the opponent scores . He’s always going over the pitching situation based on the game score , etc. In a 9-0 game it’s a chance for them to push some buttons and see how far they can go with certain guys. Remember Maddux is basically auditing the whole pitching staff and program. You need a bigger sample size than 15 games. Kurt doesn’t know who to go to because the pitching coach doesn’t know who is good or isn’t. Kurt without Maddux would be terrible.., Kurt with Maddux is learning.

I agree with you that there is learning going on with Kurt, or at least there should be. As far as the in-game managing goes. And I do think Maddux has already helped some of our guys.. But as far as not knowing the pitchers, MM has more of an excuse than Kurt. He is totally new here, Kurt is not.

Suzuki spent the entire season last year as a Special Assistant to Perry. He should know about the guys who have been in our system for a few years, like Bachman, Johnson, Silseth etc. He doesn’t get a pass in that regard because he has seen enough of those guys to know their strengths and weaknesses etc…

I’m guessing that Maddux is also politely dealing with Perry, giving his guys the opportunity that GMPM wants. The Klassen situation screams Perry. Get Klassen around Maddux. This is like the Christian Moore situation put Moore around Washington. I wonder who Maddux actually likes to be in the rotation.

The Angels now have a legit ACE – a starter in the All Star game perhaps? The offense scored 9 runs and they won 2 of 3 on the road from a quality opponent.

The result : we gave up six, our rookie manager is making mistakes, our bullpen struggled today.

Some of you will never be even a bit happy. Win the lottery and whine about paying taxes on it! We have some next level sadness around these parts.

You know, it IS possible to be glad we won AND also see that there are issues to be addressed. Don’t pretend to be a mind reader

I would not refer to the Reds as a quality opponent. They are not very good and easily the worst team we have seen so far. Soriano was outstanding But it is not likely he throws a 7 inning shutout every time, which is almost what he has had to do. The bullpen gave up 6 runs over the last two innings and our good stuff out weighed our bad stuff. In addition to our hits, we received 9 BBs. Let’s see how we do against the Yankees. Everyone here is happy that we won but we are a very mixed bag. Today’s offense was an exception so far and not the rule. We have 8 wins and 6 of those are from Soriano and Silent C. No other starting pitcher has won a game in 7 tries. Without Soriano, we could easily be 6-10 right now, or worse. I am very happy for today but I am not optimistic regarding the 162 game season, and I agree with Frosty’s comment.

That went from blowout to almost a historic collapse. What the hell.

Got interesting at the end there, but I’d rather be with you until I’m through.

Truth. The team is totally surprising me. They’ve already killed their chance to start 6-and-14, so we’re DEFINITELY out for the World Series this year.

The Angels have potential, but have lots of problems to fix. Let’s hope that they try to fix them this year. Nice to take a series against a good Reds team.

Francona does get the most out of that team. Yeah, 2 out of 3 was excellent.

Yes, Francona is a very good manager. Prior to yesterday they had not been hitting a lick and he still had them two games over .500.

Yes, owner and baseball operations/front office/player development need fixing this year.

With Molly Jolly running things now, I see that as an improvement.

Bachman and his control remains an issue. Bringing him in with a huge lead is a safe move.

Perfect comparison, Este’s strikeout to walk ratio as poor as Samuels Duane Bachman’s.

Last two times Bachman was used correctly (i.e. in close games) he walked zero batters. Both were tight or tied games against Seattle.

He was being misused. Never should have been put in a 9-0 game. Of course he would lose focus. It happens to good closers all the time when they are inserted in non-save situations..

Bachman is not a closer nor does he deserve an honor by being anointed as a late inning arm. Sam has yet to show he is reliable with his control in a tight game

Totally disagree. He has by far the best stuff of anybody in our pen (he blows Romano away as far as stuff goes). If Joyce is not healthy and ready to go he should be closing….

He pitched TWO very stressful, important and close games against Seattle and walked ZERO guys in those two appearances. It is how he is being used.

Then there was that guy I’ve never heard of and Pomeranz. No lead is safe.

Suzuki can’t manage his way out of a paper bag.

No way in HELL the Reds should have finished with 6 runs today!
