LA Angels Wednesday News Crash: Do you like Jazz?

Morning Angels fans, have some links.

Angels News

Jazz Chisholm Jr is asking for a lot of money as he will be a FA this next offseason. If there is an offseason… and by lots of money I mean the old school 10 year deals kind. Well, he is also a certified hater, saying he would rather play for the Angels than the Dodgers even if given more money by the Dodgers.

Uh, thanks?

In Spring Training news, the Angels really suck. I get it doesn’t count, but still. They are 1-4 so far, with their only win being 10-9 over the Sneks. But hey, at least they won one right? Unlike the A’s.

Around Baseball

The new ABS challenge system is being stressed tested this spring. One ump got 5 straight calls overturned behind the plate. We aren’t in full Robo ump territory yet, but these Cyborg Umps may grow on me.

Chris Sale signed a one year extension with the Braves with a club option for 2028. Either Braves are confident there will be a season next year or are just hedging their bets.

What if I told you that the Mets… were British? And by that I mean what if John Oliver said that? He has a good argument…

The WBC stats are now on BR. At last we can look at even more numbers. YAY!

Speaking of, here is a google calendar a fan made so you can keep track of when Games are.

Braves actually launch their own TV network BravesVision. Arte Moreno seethes with envy.

When the Lockout hits next year, (It is gonna happen), we will need to distract ourselves with something. The US government agrees, as they will have youth Baseball Quarters for 2027.

Nice day at Hohokam yesterday. The winless Brewers demolished the winless A’s. Good chance we hit 90 degrees here before the A’s win their first game as John Henry pointed out – that definitely takes some sting out of the Angels Cactus League record.

Nice to see Kurtz and Wilson, but I was hoping to see Giffy. Had to settle for Jordyn Adams.

He won’t do it because he’s a professional and by all accounts a good guy…

But I need a Jeff Fletcher twitter beef with Sam Blum sooooooo badly

This is interesting. It has to do with John Fisher and the A’s and building a new stadium. It gets into how there is a really good chance Fisher doesn’t have the money to finish a stadium. A big part of the issue is that his “billions” are tied up in two things, owning the A’s and owning a huge chunk of The Gap. But if he gets more investors he has to sell shares of the A’s, which will likely prevent him from making the 1.4B he’d spend on the stadium back.

If he sells stock, same issue. But in this case his family probably doesn’t let him liquify The Gap to build a stadium.

Plus, the article doesn’t mention it but I read stock reports on the GAP. It’s profit margin is actually semi-strong for a retailer…. over 5%. But they are, by nature, leveraged at over 150%. In short, retail stocks are NOT what you want to sell in a huge amount trying to make back a large sum of money. And that’s if a war, or tariffs, or a recession don’t kill that profit margin. Put simple, the team may take decades to make back the money, and the stock’s value will be damaged by a sell off and isn’t the type of high roller that will suddenly generate earnings that will recover a short fall. So you’d have a stadium losing you money and the rest of your fortune would be in a stock you damaged and diluted while you give up some control of both the Gap and the A’s.

Or, like I’ve said. These rich guys are not really all THAT rich a lot of the time.

And yet many fans calling for Atre to SELL ARTE, SELL expect a “billonaire owner” to somehow “save” the Angels by backing up a truck full of their cash, and shoveling it into the team.

I want a new owner who just knows what they’re doing. I’d happily sign up for Cardinals and Twins budgets but with a sharp operation and forward thinking executives.

I need to get into hockey by the time the lock out hits. Gotta figure out a team and why. Right now I literally like the Penguins, partly cause Crosby, but mostly because I like the extremely serious looking penguin on skates. So I’m using the girlfriend logic to pick a team at this point.

If the MLB is smart they will figure out a way to do “Wednesday Night Baseball!” and “Weekend In The Weeds” and stuff with MiLB teams. Start hyping prospects. Debuts of players after the draft, etc. Broadcast select MiLB games and have the “faces you know” talk up the stars of tomorrow. Make some lemonade. Get more folks hyped about the minors.

I know from my part time life being involved with hat design, MiLB hats and variants etc are 1000 times more popular now than just a few years ago. So are a lot of the teams. They could really jump into the void and grow their leagues.

Hockey has been good lately. If you are not going with a local team, someone like the Minnesota Wild would be fun to follow. A couple superstars, they’re pushing their chips in right now but they aren’t the obvious favorite like Colorado or a recent powerhouse like Vegas or Tampa so you’d have a very slight underdog card to play as the 3rd or 4th best team in the West.

Ducks have a good young core.

Celebrini looked like a superstar in Italy for sure, so SJ would also be a solid choice. Both teams would fit your preference for up-and- coming youth and prospects.

I’m a Kings fan, and since they just reload and don’t rebuild , they don’t fit your style. They just traded their top prospect for a 34 yr old expensive yet talented veteran to make a run in 2026. The 🍞 man.

My favorite young team are the Canadiens. Without any prior allegiance, I’d pick them if not geographically bound.

Hockey is great in the winter without baseball. I don’t know the absence of baseball in the summer is going to help, but it will make Spring better at least.

Jazz isn’t worth more than 20 mil. If like LA would stop handing out ridiculous contracts to out bid everyone, more teams could find good FA talent instead of cheap scraps. Like Perry does

Jazz is a nice player. But he isn’t gonna age well and should probably adjust his thinking. I love the Doyer hate though. That is attractive.

Yesterday consensus #1 prospect Konnor Griffin (Pirates) hit 2 HRs. One off of Ranger Suarez.

Dude had a .950 OPS in A/AA last year as an 18 yo, and won gold glove for best glove at SS in the minors. He looks insanely good.

He was picked 9th in 2024. One pick before Christian Moore. I know, HS vs College talent and the draft is a crapshoot. But I hadn’t realized he was available when we picked.

I don’t follow the draft at all – only afterwards – but that stuff is amazing to me. So much volatility in the amateur draft in baseball…

Anyway, gonna keep an eye on him. He looks really good.

Of course Griffin will become a stud, cause we passed on him with the pick right before. Angels trAdition. We just have to sit back and hope Moore turns out decent so we don’t suffer another draft flop.

gitchogritchoffmypettis

Yup. That’s why I’m always saying to give it a few years. Griffin looks REALLY good. I follow the Pirates and their system. The thing is, he looked REALLY good a while after the draft. He showed up to last ST and looked like he had worked on and improved EVERYTHING. On draft day no one, not even the Pirates, expected him to come on so strong. He had weaknesses when drafted and addressed them really fast.

And what’s sick about baseball is he could still totally flop.

At the same time Moore could “fail” as 2B, but spend 2 years learning LF, fully exploit his hitting abilities, and be our All Star LF for ten years. We just don’t really know.

Yep, the Rockies decided to remember they were the Rockies and gave up some runs, so if you took the over, then you would have won the bragging rights.

Pitchers who light up a radar gun >>>>>>

Soriano (100 mph), GRod (98), Urena (99), R. Johnson (97), Cortez (100), Snead (100), Shores (98). Can’t wait to see Bremner and Klassen next.

We have a bunch of Charmanders that we are hoping Maddux can turn into Charizards.

No, we have a bunch of guys who throw a baseball hard that we are hoping Maddux can turn into pitchers.

Ultimately, it matters zero how hard these guys throw if they have no idea where the ball is going, and they can’t miss bats.

I know as an Angel fans we are going to be suspicious and reject any positive concepts – but it’s OK to be a teeny tiny bit excited about some young player who show some upside.

Senator_John_Blutarsky

That’s fine – be excited about guys on the roster that can touch 100 mph on the radar. I’m not trying to harsh your glee.

The point remains: throwing a baseball 100mph or 105mph is not by itself “upside”. I see more upside in the pitcher who has pinpoint control of a 92MPH fastball or a 12-to-6 curveball, or in the pitcher who has great arm deception between a fastball and a changeup. Those players have upside that beats the competition.

Focusing on players who throw hard is what those who prioritize entertainment – not winning championships – do.

Ummm. Throwing 100 MPH is the literal definition of pure physical upside for a pitcher. The stuff you are talking about is a pitcher being developed.

Which is where all the slips betwixt a lip and a cup come in….

Yup. Velo matters

Senator_John_Blutarsky

It seems to be more than just throwing hard, but granted there’s multiple schools of thought on the matter.

According to Fangraphs (quoting scouts), “pure physical upside” for a pitcher refers to a high-potential prospect whose ability to throw with elite velocity, spin, and movement is rooted in their physical frame, athleticism, and raw strength rather than developed skill, polish, or refined mechanics.

Bottom line: we’ll see if Maddux can mold our high velocity “lumps of clay” into something useful this season.

Yup it is indeed cool to have seven guys (and probably more if you count a couple other kids n Fermin) who crack 97 regularly. Plus Zeferjahn and Joyce too. We hope.

Sure, if we have like ten of those guys we’ll be lucky if four turn out to be long term arms. But you have to get those guys to even get the four actual pitchers and we have them. So baby steps….

This is the only HR in the Statcast era hit on a ball out of the zone for a HR 100mph or harder. Along the outer edges – it’s only 28 HR’s.

Drop down to 98 and there are 300+ home runs on the edges. Granted – a lot of dudes throw 98 – but also – it’s hard to square up 100 when it’s not down the middle.

Jazz is a funny guy.

After getting the low-ball one year offer from the Angels, Jazz will follow the money. No athlete wants to lose both money and games.

I’d go full ABS strike zone – 5 straight pitches wrong. C’mon. Just rip the bandaid off and do it. I’d rather have a consistent strike zone and so would the hitters. It would be great to see catchers playing that could hit, block and throw runners out. Today’s catcher is so rewarded for stealing strikes that it’s the most sought out skill from a buying WAR standpoint. Stealing strikes can be multiple wins a year on its own. We need to see more catchers that can hit. If full ABS becomes the trend -and it trickles to the upper college level – it will mean more athletes (aka shortstops) end up being converted to catcher.

Too bad ABS wasn’t used in games when Angel Hernandez was an active umpire. The constant head patting for 9 innings would have made a great video.

Jazz is quite confident. Let’s see if he gets a little humbled this year or if he’s the real deal.
