Unbelievably, this is the last Weekend Links of 2025. The years are flying by just like my parents said they would. Turns out, they knew a lot more than teenage me imagined. So let’s look forward to 2026 and take a little stroll down memory lane.
On a personal note, I’ve been offered the position of running Sports Illustrated’s OnSI page dedicated to the Angels starting on New Year’s Day. To say writing for SI and getting a check for covering the Angels is a dream come true would be an understatement. And a huge thanks to the crew here and at HH for giving me my start and being so supportive throughout the years.
In no way does this mean I’m abandoning CtPG. This is my Angels family. You’ll still see me in comments, dropping occasional content, and linking all of my content from SI here. Using that name will get me interviews, press credentials, and access I can’t get on my own and I want to enjoy all of that with you. They don’t do comments, gamethreads, or post games and my contract is non exclusive. So, stay tuned and we’ll figure out how this thing plays out.
But this column isn’t about me. It is about the Angels who pretty much took a Christmas break along with the rest of the league.
Last Friday the team reached an undisclosed settlement with the family of Tyler Skaggs. That pretty much put a lid on 2025 and allowed the team to look forward.
One name consistently mentioned around here is Kazuma Okamoto who would finally solve the club’s third base nightmare. However, many teams are in the mix.
Yes, that’s a Pittsburgh Pirates site pushing to sign the big bat. The Pirates are having a fun offseason and landed two legitimate bats this week. First they traded for Brandon Lowe. Then they landed Ryan O’Hearn for 2 years at a cost of $29 million.
It was a good week for the underdogs as the Chicago White Sox surprisingly added another Japanese slugger, Munetaka Murakami for 2 years and $34 million. Murakami wasted no time before showing some class.
And like the Pirates, the White Sox double dipped on adding talent. They also signed former Angels first rounder Sean Newcomb for a year. Nuke was really solid out of the bullpen for the A’s and Red Sox last season. Much like Detmers, Nuke has reinvented himself as an aggressive reliever and the results are promising. Honestly, I would have liked him back.
Baseball news links are about like department store shelves right now. There’s just not a lot of inventory.
Spring Training is thankfully pretty close. Check out the full schedule starting in February. Intern Landon has already scheduled gamethreads for every Angels Cactus League game. My dad and I just finalized our plans for our annual trip. ‘Tis the season.
I know a lot of folks make New Year’s resolutions. I don’t. I make plans. But if you resolve to get outside, spend more time with family and friends, and just enjoy life a little bit more I can’t recommend a Spring Training trip highly enough. The only problem with going to Spring Training is that once you start you’ll want to come back every year.
So as we wrap up this holiday week. Thanks to everybody for making this a great community in 2025. We kept a closer eye on college ball than normal. Our draft threads were incredible because of it. We had a great site meetup towards the end of the year and will definitely do more in 2026. Can’t say we saw great baseball, but we had our moments like going 6-0 against the Dodgers and sweeping the Roid Sox.
Please enjoy your weekend and link what I missed. I’ll wish you a Happy New Year now and again in comments next week.
Andrew Heaney Announces Retirement

While there’s a subthread below that starts with “Okamoto is down to the Pirates and Angels”, it appears that the Padres have entered the chat.
If the Friars end up with Song and Okamoto, it’s going to be doubly difficult not to spend more of next season watching Padres games over Angels games. When we were launching this site, I had made a soft pitch to make it a Pads/Angels community – one for each league, kind of a SoCal spread bet against the Dodgers. (Jessica was interested, but the other founders not so much). The site name had a thematic resonance with both teams.
Throw me a line, AM/PM. You’re making keeping this quarter century losing streak of fandom alive as tough as possible. I’m no Job, and can’t sign up for generational punishment. Make me an offer, dudes.
“My offer is this… Nothing. Not even the fee for the gaming license, which I would appreciate if you would put up personally..”
Go Halos!
I am a glutton for punishment and am looking forward to this next season, even though it will be brutal.
Praying that the A’s sign Rengifo. Yo Perry, just say, ” No.”
Pirates and A’s spending??? Sign of the end times or sign that they are posturing to aid in CBA talks?? HMMM. With all that said Okamoto makes WAY to much sense with the Halos and I for one expect it to happen. Positive news is what Arte is craving right now to change the current news about the club. He’s all about the PR being something nice and shiny and not the current status of the team that shelled out $$ for Skaggs.
If the Halos sign anyone, Okamato should be it. It aligns with what the team has been about.
If the rumors are true that Okamoto is down to the Pirates and Angels, and we don’t get him… Woooof
Eh. Just save money and play whatever yutes are down on the farm.
There are no viable yutes to play 3rd lol.
Missing out on a Japanese player who wants to play for this shitty organization to fill a decade-long hole at 3rd would be another indictment on Arte. We should be relegated
All the other Japanese players signed low $ low years. Do you think Atre will be the one that shells out the 60m longer contact?
I have ultimate faith in Arte getting outbid
I suspect Kikuchi has reached out to his fellow countryman to aide Okamato’s decision. If the terms are favorable, I’m all for a new toy.
So if Okamato likes air conditioning we’re doomed.
Haha…hopefully Kikuchi values 3rd base over weight room amenities. To be sure, get Stefanic back, pay for him to get his HVAC license on top of his plumbing duties to get the air con problem resolved, A-Dee-Do.
Way-2-Go Jeff, securing the SI gig! They made a good choice. Your comments are always well founded, not overly critical, tad of optimism and with good insight. Seriously, will definitely be interesting to read, looking forward to it.
1st task/challenge. Can you get this Perry guy to be more forthright and stop with the baseball spaghetti salad when addressing the origination path forward?
Thanks.
I expect GMs to have a good non answer to most questions.
GJ bud, ‘grats!
No new news.
I think Perry is hibernating.
(lame) Ducks 🦆 fly south for the winter
Under the stadium?
Wow that’s cool news! Congrats Jeff!
Thank you.
Congrats, Jeff- I guess we have a reason to read SI now!!! All the best, sir!
Thank you.
Jeff, I wish you all the best in your new endeavors. A big thank you for your hard work and insights.
Thanks and you’re welcome.
Congratulations Jeff!!! They must have noticed your interview skills.
I’m hoping to do more of those.
Thanks.
Are you going to ask them, “In-n-Out or Five Guys?”
another week and we’ll be in the month before spring training. Wild how quickly this happens now.
Meanwhile, congrats Jeff. We’re proud of you. You deserve to have a larger platform but we’re glad you’ll still be here, too.
Thank you.
Awesome news, Congratulations Jeff.
Thank you

Didn’t even realize print issues and the swimsuit edition still existed.
Congratulations Mr. Joiner! You definitely deserve it.
Thank you.
Yes, Congratulations. Please get us lots of inside dope, er,not literally.
I agree with Jeff, so I’d like to be the 1st to thank myself for making CTPG such a Great Community!
Congratulations Jeff! Well deserved and thank you for all that you have done for this site.
Thank you.
I hope Santa brought Arte a respite from senility, Perry a brain, Suzuki the patience of Job, Trout health, Schanuel muscles, Rendon retirement, and Rengifo a new team.
My worst nightmare is that Rengifo continues to attract zero interest in the market and our Angels decide to bring him back. We have suffered enough, Perry!
I’d take him in a minors deal but that would be tempting Perry.
Congratulations Jeff. This is much deserved. Your contribution and knowledge of the game and Angels should be recognized, and clearly it was noticed. Your dedication to this community is so appreciated by all of us. It’s awesome to hear you won’t be saying goodbye. I’ll be waiting for your contributions here like a dog on a waxy floor. Congrats again.
Thank you.
What great news , Jeff. Well deserved!! Best of luck.
Thank you.
