LA Angels Wednesday News Crash: A wet Christmas Eve

Morning Angels fans, stay dry, and have some links.

Angels News

Adam the Woo, an Angels (and Rays) fan and Youtuber TheDailyWoo, died. He was found dead in his home in Florida.

Flood Warning issued for SoCal. Be safe out there.

Around Baseball

Pirates signed someone to a multi year deal for the first time in 9 years. Yes, December 2016 was 9 years ago wow.

This HOF election may have some names get big numbers. While early, quite a few have been on way more ballots than last year, with King Felix getting 55% of the first 40.

Want a last minute Christmas Present? OOTP 26 is on sale.

As we get closer and closer to the next CBA being made, MLB fans were polled on their opinions on a salary cap. Morning Consult had lots of support for a salary cap, with 50% of avid fans being in favor, MLB Trade Rumors having 67% in favor, and Sportsbuisnessjournal giving us demographic data where the older the more in favor. Odd how the less you follow baseball the less you want a cap. I really thought it would be the other way around, must be fans of small market teams being mad.

Former Angel Nuke is now a White Sox. Remember when we all thought he would be great, and instead he was traded for Simba? Those were the days…

I don’t think the Angels are their focus. They are looking to bring playoff baseball to Las Vegas.

According to sources, the Angels have expressed interest in Okamoto’s contract. Okamoto places importance on a family environment, and the area where the Angels are based is a comfortable place to live, with a strong Japanese community. Third baseman Rendon is expected to retire, leaving the position vacant. Other potential candidates include the Pirates, Red Sox, and Diamondbacks.

Okamoto and Bader, baby. Make it so.

Trade some underwater contracts for a Senga or Berrios, call it a day. Not expecting too much, but the team can still add a few wins over last year while letting the prep arms ferment.

Baseball America posted an 18-minute podcast on the Angels farm. Nothing too different from what we talk about:

– they like Bremner, Jordan, Davalillo
– farm is devoid of impact bats
– a ton of interesting young pitchers. Can the Angels develop them is the big question

I’ve been freaked out about Davalillo since Turk posted that fat-pic last week. Org needs to nip that in the bod… um, bud.

He’s not fat, he’s thick, maybe chonk. If he is successful, we can call him Phat!? I bet he doesn’t show up to ST that….chonkish.

I should rephrase, I hope he doesn’t show up to ST chonkish. I hope he has a good agent. I told you guys my story before about heavy pitchers that gained weight between high school and ST being sent right back home. But maybe the Halos are softer on player conditioning, who knows.

Still don’t understand Bremner at #2. So many other better choices if looking at ultimate on field performance. Also don’t understand qWhy Minasian picks so many RP early.

Lots of the draft strategy is dictated by budgetary thought process such as saving money in early rounds to be utilized to sign players in later rounds.

I still don’t think picking Bremner at #2 is that crazy – in Feb of *this same year* he was the top right-handed college pitcher in baseball and Jamie Arnold was the best left-handed college pitcher. A complete toss-up between them – top 5 material. It’s not like he blew out his arm in the six months between.

There are few universes where I’d personally pick Bremner over Kade Anderson, but that’s subjective – I like his pitch portfolio and durability. Had the draft been held in Feb or March, though, I don’t think anyone would have thought twice if the Angels selected the Gaucho at #2.

Going all in on relievers that don’t miss bats in subsequent early rounds is what’s baffling, imo.

Good comments. Bremner was local also so the guess is they thought they knew the most about him.

What’s crazy is we will pass Christmas and likely New Years day and I’d have to say way more than half the FAs I’d actually want us to sign are still just sitting there. Other than the Ward trade Perry could still pull off my IIWPM. He won’t because we’d then be stuck watching a team the fans will whine about. But still, a lot of trades could be made and plenty of fairly healthy FA filler is still out there….

It makes for a frustrating Dec and Jan, but I bet there’s gonna be some pretty solid guys available as ST approaches, so the “wait out the market and dive into the clearance bin” plan actually makes sense. This is especially true if so many of us have gotten what we want, we’ve spoken with our wallets, and Arte is making less money year over year. Their big splashes will be Adam Frazier and Chris Paddock and we should be so proud.

No thanks. Utility guy works, but him at 3rd full time would be a disaster defensively.

Things have been moving slow. Holding out not signing the filler is good to enhance the acceptances for minimum, 1-yr contracts. While some intersting older vet names are out there, nothing that moves the needle.

I just want to go on record that unless Rada blows the doors off in ST, he needs to start @ AAA, if not remain there all year, until late season callups. We can only look at Adell (Maybe even Moore) and wonder how good he could be now, for longer under team control, if had not been rushed to the bigs.

Aldgeheri and Dana were rushed & torched, though for cups of coffee, and I hope we don’t manufacture another Scott Erickson situation for out developing pitchers.

Scott Erickson? What does he have to do with the Angels?

The issue is not rushing a young player, especially a pitcher, up to the majors to hit the wall at 100 MPH (Several times) and expect them to be dropped back into the minors and “Develop.”

If our AAA team was anywhere near sea level, I’d be with you. But Rada’s key attribute is his OBP and he’ll need to see breaking pitches actually break to hone that skill.

Hopefully he blows the doors off in ST and makes it a moot point.

IMHO Jeff, altitude contributes to carry, aka homeruns, not high batting averages (Unless all stadiums have 25 foot walls that doubles and triples bounce off). Additionally, success or “Meh” in the minors does not directly contribute to success or lack thereof in the majors. Rada is very young and all decisions involving him cannot be made without that in mind. Not all 19 year-olds are Robin Yount.

Brandon Woods is a glaring example, while his power numbers were aided by altitude and MiLB stadiums, his hitting did not equate to the majors-He was THEE #1 baseball prospect in baseball when he was promoted to the big club in Anaheim.

Noted as to Rada, but I don’t think anyone can really tell with every player which individuals need lots of seasoning versus who can adjust and get to the majors quickly. Further, I’m unsure if it truly hurts every player to get to the majors early, not succeed, and then go back for further seasoning. Each player is different. Given what happened with Adell, I don’t know if he can be an example of anything. He came up, he went down, he struggled lots of places. You can create scenarios that might have been different for him, but could easily have been the same.

Schanuel came up fast and seems to be adjusting fine. Moore came us fast, struggled, went down, was lousy there, came back up and did better. He seems to be someone that enjoys rising to the challenge. His story isn’t written but I don’t know if changing it in hindsight would help.

Let’s see what happens with Rada and hope for the best.

My point was Adell was rushed, no one argues that. Once you start the player’s clock, it limits the team’s options.

Love seeing the Pirates making moves.

Lots of talk about a cap but need more talk about a floor. It’s the combination of the two that makes the NFL so competitive.

Did everyone miss the BA blurb from DK Sports Pittsburg that the Pirates are actually losing money while only devoting 41% of revenue to payroll. Voodoo? Fact?

Hey let’s party and talk about int’l FAs. Signing day is January 15. Through exhaustive internet research, I see the Halos are linked to three top players:

• Jeyson Horton. The ex-Yankees one. Ranked No. 9 in the class. Compact SS at 5-foot-9. 60-grade speed and 55 bat. Fringy arm, evidently, which combined with his stature suggests a move to 2B down the line. But could be a stud there. Altuve-like.
• Kendri Fana. Though rated in the 40s overall, he’s also the top RHP pitcher available, according to Pipeline. Projectable 16-year-old with a 55-grade fastball. So: We might have the best starting pitching prospect out of Latin America… which is sort of like having the best barbecue in Canada, but that’s cool. https://www.mlb.com/milb/prospects/2026/international/kendri-fana-836621
• Aramy Terrero. Another RHP, cited by Jared Tims as a Top 50 Pipeline guy (no. 37) but has since disappeared from that list. Similar profile to Fana. https://www.mlb.com/es/video/top-international-prospects-aramy-terrero-rhp

The Pirates are now wheeling and dealing better than the Halos. It’s a new low for the Anaheim club.
