LA Angels Wednesday News Crash: 12th drafting place isn’t so bad?

Morning Angels fans. Have some links or whatever.

Angels News

The Angels traded for Vaughn Grissom from the Red Sox. Former top prospect that they got from the Braves for Chris Sale.

The Draft lottery happened. The Angels, despite sucking, are unable to draft in the top 10 because they got 2nd last time. Because the Angels make too much money or something. Anyway, they draft 12th this time.

12th place isn’t so bad?

Kenley Jansen is still out there. Tigers want him. As do the Angels.

Did you know Zach Neto is a Twitch streamer? Here he is streaming with Vtuber Akascarlet. He really loves Call of Duty, huh? If she seems familiar, she promoted the Ducks Anime night at the Pond.

Around Baseball

Dodgers add Edwin Diaz. 3/69M. This is despite Dave Roberts saying they won’t add much.

Schwarber stays in Philly. 5Y/150M. At least the Pirates tried.

Team USA of the WBC is coming together. No Trout it seems.

Montana Fouts threw a bullpen session for teams. She is seen as the best Softball pitcher in the newly founded Athletes Unlimited Softball League. Angels need pitching, and PR…

Do not expect big trades. Since allegedly, teams are being reluctant to trade their best players this year. I blame the looming lockout.

And there goes Yaz, to the Braves no less.

At a decent price too. $9m this year, $10m next. Seems affordable for Anaheim, but who knows if there was mutual interest.

Joe Buck won the Ford Frick Award.

I guess the voters were fans of either the Yankmees, the Bosux, the Doyers, or the Cards.

Here’s a list of who the Angels added and who we lost in the Rule V draft.

Just keep in mind – to be selected in the minor league phase of the Rule 5 draft, you can’t be rostered on the 40 man of any minor league affiliate.

These players are really on the fringe of the system – guys like Gaston and Ryan themselves only entered the Angels system in 2025.

I actually really like this guy. Defensivly very good and more depth is needed in AAA for us. Minor league pick up here?

I watched him play a couple of times in High School. I saw him as having a real chance even if his bat played average. Was elite defensively – like more than just really good. Presentation and throwing were top notch. I don’t know if he improved, but he was an impressive backstop in HS for sure. From what I remember, his HS had two really good arms on the bump who he made look better.

Seems rather odd they didnt select anyone considering the cost of only $50K and the fact they have 5 open spots on their 40 man roster and one of those 35 filled roster spots belongs to Rendone.

Arte must be figuring on signing alot of free agents.

The problem is the Rule 5 guys have to stay on the 26 man all year, although there isn’t exactly a logjam at 26.

So what? you don’t have to make a decision until the season opener and theres no guarantee that the original team will want the player back regradless as they have to pay half of the $50 grand back.

They have at least five 40 man slots open, so they must not have liked what was on the shelves. I’m not sure I saw any no-doubters there myself.

Just relieved that Natera Jr didn’t get nabbed.

Agreed as every player taken after the Angels passed was a pitcher and our bullpen has plenty of spots open.

I’m not going to pretend I know much about these guys, but bringing an extra arm on the cusp of MLB ready into camp for 50 grand seems like a decent idea.

But if Turk’s is fine with it, I’m fine with it.

I liked a few of the arms selected before the Angels’ slot, like McGarry, but nothing I’m particularly alarmed about.

The three players selected from the Angels in the AAA phase weren’t worldbeaters – Gaston and Ryan rather recent pickups. Jake Smith is the only notable, as he was one of the last survivors from the all-pitching draft of 2021. Sixth rounder. Average relief profile, command issues

Looks like the Angels lost two more arms (five in total) in the AAA phase. The only one I’m bummed about is Jorge Marcheco, who is only 23 and has been making progress in recent seasons.

The MLB phase is over – no players selected by or from the Angels. Only 13 players selected overall this year, fewer than a typical year.

On the surface it seems like a good year to pick up a guy in the Rule V draft.

We pick 6th and need bullpen help and depth in general. Seems like a chance to add a corner outfielder or reliever or something.

It has been about three years now that we have kept hearing the same line about the Angels being competitive in two or three years, and somehow, they never seem to get any closer. With ’27 shaping up to be a lockout or strike year and the financial landscape of MLB likely to get rewritten, I honestly do not see the point in making any major financial commitments right now. If I were Perry, I would probably be looking at starting a real rebuild once the new labor deal is in place…
That is assuming he was working for anyone other than Arte. But who knows, Arte might age out of the decision-making process by then, and maybe that is the real target date for starting a true rebuild. Forget Trout and Rendon being the burdensome contracts. The only contract whose expiration will really change this franchise is Arte’s.

Is it in Perry’s best interests to tear it all down given he’s on a one-year contract?

Dr. Frankenstein couldn’t get this brain dead farce of a MLB team up and moving on competitive feet in one year. Divine intervention would probably have it’s challenges as well.

The problem, in my unasked for opinion, is that Arte dances between (Not admitting) re-building and trying to compete now. That has doomed Halo baseball to being non-competitive.

There was no real reason, in terms of building a winner, for Perry to have been extended last time. I don’t think he’ll be canned

Until Arte and Perry both leave we are relegated to insignificance. We may have a higher payroll but we have become the Pirates and Rockies. The A’s and Rays have no money but at least they have people that know baseball. We are directionless and pathetic.

Angelz4ever

Despite finishing with the seventh-worst record in the Majors last season, the Angels were ineligible for the Draft lottery this year. They are considered a “payor club” because they give rather than receive revenue sharing dollars and therefore can’t receive a lottery pick in consecutive years.”

So, the formula is, “Build” a crappy team, don’t spend on retaining your talent, don’t get a decent TV contract, don’t draw fans or ad monies, lose your @ss off every year and you too can get top ten picks.

#BULLSH**!

Maybe Arte should remove half the stadium seats and forfeit TV money, then we’ll get an annual top ten pick guaranteed.

gitchogritchoffmypettis
Legend

See, the system actually works. It’s just pissing you off. It’s meant to keep things like the Cubs and Astros of yesteryear from happening, where teams with the money to pay players tank on purpose and cut their payroll so they can get the benefits of being “poor” but then spend 280M on payroll when it suites them.

There are actually penalties for the broke ass teams too. They can’t just sit there and collect #1 picks for ten years. What we need to hope for is that revenue sharing is adjusted so broke ass teams eventually lose revenue sharing if they don’t spend on players. Or better yet require ALL revenue sharing to go to payroll.

Angelz4ever

Yes, I agree revenue sharing should dry up if it is just graft for deadbeat owners.

I’ve had people question why im not a clipper fan…. Ok.. growing up in the 80s, you pick the closest team to you (angels) then after that, its the closest BEST team (lakers).

Why would any kid with self-esteem choose the clippers?

Because the Clippers were an unwanted import from San Diego, they have always sucked, they’re the worst perennially mis-managed big market NBA team, you couldn’t give away their gear in the 80s through early 2000s, they are the pimple on the Laker’s market’s back, and they have the audacity to consider themselves the Lakers “Rivals” in the wettest and wildest of dreams.

There’s just a few reasons why not to be a Clipper fan. I have been a Laker fan since Magic’s rookie season.

I went to the Arizona vs. UCLA basketball game a few weeks ago at Intuit Dome and the Clippers definitely have the nicer venue. That place is incredible.

I first realized Staples (yes, it will always be Staples) was starting to look dated when I went to T Mobile in Vegas for a fight back in 2021. The more often I go to T Mobile, the older Staples looks.

Now Intuit Dome makes T Mobile look dated. It is like a better T Mobile with SoFi Stadium and a really cool night club mixed in.

It is going to be awesome when The Angels pick a 4th round relief pitcher as the 12th pick in the draft so they can save money for the later round players that other teams are sleeping on. I mean, the results speaks for itself!
