LA Angels Thursday News Crash: Raudi!

Here is the 2025 All AFL Team. Raudi made it! MLB has new media deals with ESPN, NBC, and Netflix. This probably won’t make much difference for Angels coverage.

Tomorrow is the non-tender deadline. Then we can see who is on the table and who is off the table. MLBTR says these are the candidates. Not only do the Angels say Robert Stephenson will be ready for spring training, but they also say that about Anthony Rendon. They are a little more ambivalent about whether Ben Joyce will be ready.

This just in: The Angels are hoping to add a center fielder and a third baseman.

Liover Peguero got a minor league deal with the Phillies organization. I can see it now, Peguero the Iron Pig. Declan Cronin got his minor league deal with the Texas Rangers. The Braves acquired lefty Ryan Rolison from the Rockies for cash. The Braves also re-signed Raisel Iglesias.

The Mets released Frankie Montas. They will pay him $17 Million in 2026 and he will probably be injured all season. I guess they wanted the roster spot for Nick Morabito. The Braves re-signed Raisel Iglesias and also got Mauricio Dubon.

Padres Hall Of Famer Randy Jones passed away at the age of 75.

The next 24 hours are a great time to create some depth.

Jake McCarthy would be nice to have as a CF’er on the roster. He slides to the 4th OF role if we land a bigger fish.

Jesus Sanchez as Gitcho states below is a relatively cheap replacement for Ward. Jake Fraley is a left who will cost about half as much and is a rated bang average with the bat and glove.

Matt Vierling can play all over the grass and at third base. He’s one year removed from a 3 WAR season and only 28 years old. If he gets cut loose, I’d grab him.

Jonathan India is an interesting player. Not worth $7.4 million based on last year, but he can somewhat play multiple positions and has a career OBP of .346.

And then you get to the relievers with Kevin Ginkel, Ryan Thompson, Sam Hentges, and more who could help solidify the bullpen. None of these guys are sexy but when it is the 6th inning in June we’d be glad to have any of them.

Dang it. I just posted my list of delicious trash…. which is also your list of delicious trash plus some other trash.

When the Astros don’t tender him a contract, we could get Jesus Sanchez. Again, not a roster transforming addition, but a plus value player who bats lefty…. a solid LF who will steal a dozen bases, hit a dozen HR and have an OBP over .300. If you want to replace Ward cheap and still have some money left over for other stuff….

Looking further into possible jettisoned players that could help us…

2B: I bet all these guys either get signed or get traded. But I’d take Gavin Lux all day, probably Jonathan India too since both can play OF too. Luis Garcia’s not too bad either.

At 3B, I have watched him some and I think Andy Ibanez could maybe help us. He won’t have much power, but he can field the position, I also think, given more ABs, he can get to slightly below average OPS+ numbers with a semi-good OBP.

In CF. JJ Bledey has a 99 career OPS+ and hits left handed. We have lived with far worse. Matt Veirling is a right handed version of the same who fields better and can play 3B in a pinch. His numbers cratered this year, but I like Jake McCarthy too and would gamble on him getting back to career norms, which would make us very happy. Only issue is he’s not a brilliant CF. But he’s a lefty.

I like a .727 OPS. I am pretty certain the Twins want to not pay Trevor Larnach. He’s not a very good OF, basically the same as Ward, but he bats lefty with some pop and OBP numbers that are a shade under Wards in his career. So Mr Pibb Taylor Ward with a left handed swing for less than 1/3 the cost of Ward? He’s not an FA till 2028.

As much as the name Keegan makes me want to barf I’d take Keegan Akin as a LHRP and see if Maddox can get those walks down to less than 4/9IP. At that point he’s effective. Sam Moll is in the same boat. If the Padres financial chickens have really come home I’d go after Jason Adam maybe. He could close for us. I’d take a flyer on Kevin Kelly going back to a nice high ERA+. Same with Cole Sulser.

This Grayson guy does seem to have a tad bit of diva on him. According to some there were some attitude questions. The GM is an Astros guy who did not draft him, so he doesn’t have emotional attachment. He went on to say Grayson was a ā€œwildcardā€ basically not dependable. The national media story today says that Baltimore was not counting on him. Grayson says he’s throwing a ton of innings. I’m thinking both are full of shit. Maddux says he needs to fix things according to the report. Grayson earlier says he doesn’t have to change anything, Grayson probably has a strict innings limit. He’s going to be grumpy. But Maddux is there to straighten the boy out. I’m guessing without major setbacks, Rodriguez pitches max 80-90 innings this season with an eye on next year. To be fair, this is how they built up Soriano.

I’m thinking the Angels HAVE to get another pitcher that can successfully eat innings. I don’t think they get a big ACE but they can’t get another injury guy like Tyler Mahle. Hendricks and Anderson were innings eaters of 150+ and you also have to factor in the Detmers has to stretch out again. I think they lean on 6 or 7 (haha) starters of 70+ innings or 12-13 starts at the least . I

If it’s not. Ranger Suarez or something, then I could see a Zach Littell who just churns innings.

Kikuchi
Soriano
Littell
Detmers
Rodriguez

6th starter has to be one of the young guys they can cycle up and down… it’s crazy but Caden Dana has really dropped off the prospects , because they only mention Ryan Johnson, Klassen and Bremmer now. I get it, Dana has no out pitch

I would actually hope they look at what they are doing as at least a 2 year process. They don’t have the resources to address everything this year, so fill some spots and address more next year. We have 3 players who can play CF. I would not spend any resources addressing that this year. I would love to see them sign Bellinger as a 5year solution for RF which allows them to trade Adell, and I really like Jeff’s idea for the Japanese 3B. They need at least one more starting pitcher and then address additional needs next year when you have more resources. The problem is that there may not be a 2027 season so you’re shooting for 2028.

I agree. Let’s use one of our defense first CFs (Teo is my first choice) to support our corner OFs in the field. I think of him as Kelly Leak covering for the other kids in Bad New Bears. That leaves resources to attack our 3B and pitching needs. I love the idea of the Japanese 3B.

Wow. The update is scary. Angels saying Stephenson will be ready in the spring as will Rendon but they won’t commit on Joyce?? Joyce is the only one I have expect to be a key part of the team and the future. Reading between the lines, that means none of the three can be counted on. Not good. Joyce was expected to make an impact on return.

As to the CF and 3B issues, the CF market for a left-handed bat went down once Grisham re-signed with the Yankees. Now it’s looking like overpaying Mullins or the like. 3B is either the Japanese HR star or bust. Most fans are betting on bust.

And now he traded a reliable number 4 hitter for a wildcard pitcher coming off injury. I guess he can lump him with Stephenson, Joyce, etc. Yikes. I’d enjoy being positive. But sometimes it’s hard.

The IL is not available during the off season. The team had to take him off the IL.

That move is not indicative of improved health.

On top of all this we also didn’t draft Ethan Holliday or sign Jackson Churio plus when we signed Baldo we totally passed on signing Vlad Guerrero Jr who was just begging to take less money from us to come play in Anaheim instead of the hated Canada that he has to lie about loving. All while Anthony Rendon keeps having surguries he doesn’t need so he can avoid playing baseball cause he’s a piece of shit who cares about his family more than baseball.

This link and a nickel will buy you a lamb skin condom, but the MLB time machine shows us why folks were so excited about Grayson Rodriguez in 2023… and why we still might be. 70 grade fastball and change up, plus command, etc. And an early propensity for injury, unfortunately. But he should be well rested otherwise when he shows up in Arizona this spring. https://www.mlb.com/milb/prospects/2023/top100/

It sounds lame as shit, but I actually know a guy who has been involved with Groot in Baltimore. Is he injury prone? Yes. BUT they have also really really really been cautious with him. With his shoulder issue in particular. There was a lot of guarding against serious injury rather than actual serious injury. So no guarantees he’ll be fine, but I also wouldn’t absolutely panic regarding his list of issues.

By saying that Rendone and Stephenson will be ready for the start of Spring training, what they mean is : They have their snacks and drinks ready, on a tray, right next to their IL recliners.

RenDone will never play another game for us, and I prefer that we just release him.

That is what I would do unless there were insurance money involved that releasing him would void the insurance.

Please, baby irony Jesus, let Rendon actually play a full season and hit well. I will laugh for like six months strait.

one thing all the IIWPM say so far is not putting Teo/Rada in CF to start. I completely saw that Teo cannot hit whatsoever but I also saw he may be one of the best defensive CFs in baseball and he could make a very big impact there enough to be full time MLB. I was skeptical but now have seen the way.

Rada seems like another odd prodigy with is OBP%. Put him in there too and let them fight for CF/4thof.

even with Ward gone, IIWPM, I’d stand pat in OF and use the money elsewhere.

I like them both. What I like even more is having them both PLUS another fairly good OF that makes it so I don’t have to count on either of them. I even have strange hope that Teo can learn to get on base enough to be a viable bench OF.
