Division Series Day 2 Gamethread
Remember earlier this week when much of the sports msm were speaking of a Yankees juggernaut cruising through the playoffs, and the betting odds had them as top choice for the AL representative?
Hmm, methinks the bettors and oddsmakers may have been underestimating the Jays a touch.
I went back to Turks Teeth’s draft preview from 2024. Yes, TT was high on Yesavage, classifying him as a “double” while calling Moore a “single” and an underslot target.
Meanwhile that’s some terrible “relief” following Yesavage’s performance
If you look at that piece, Yesavage was actually the top available player on my board when the team chose Moore. (All the HRs/triple names were selected at that point.)
Moore was #5 on my board with Yesavage, Cam Smith, Braden Montgomery and Seaver King ahead of him – in that order.
I’ll stand behind that take – I still like Yesavage and Smith over Moore as good fits for the Angels at present.
To Fungo’s point, my position is also the same – to quote that 2024 piece: “The Angels haven’t developed a prep position player of note since Trout’s draft, so Rainer and Griffin feel like selections for a developmental org that doesn’t exist.” Griffin was an upside talent, but I’m still not convinced he would’ve flown through the Angels system like he has the Pirates.
The team has largely struck out on upside prep bats in the domestic draft for fifteen years, and they’ve drafted plenty of them. Maybe Griffin’s talent would shine through a difficult developmental environment, but I’d like to see that proven out with the existing pipeline before that’s a given. YMMV.
Chase Burns, Hagen Smith and Trey Yesavage top 3 starters scouts were tracking in the 2024 draft class. Toronto was the benefactor of Trey falling to the 20th slot. Very impressive performance.
Angels shoulda, woulda, couda…
Based on my boards, the Angels would have selected Trey Yesavage first, and Bryce Cunningham or Jonathan Santucci second in 2024 (I was also high on Ben Hess for the second round, but the Yankees nabbed him at #24.)
It would be a very different pitching pipeline with Yesavage and Cunningham in the system.
Note that I thought Chris Cortez would be a good pickup in rounds 3-5 (I was thinking optimally a fourth rounder, but the team scooped him up much earlier.) Sort of like 2015, when I thought Taylor Ward would be good value in rounds 2 or 3.
First rounder, actually.
Has already exceeded my expectations – looked like a mid-rotation guy at drafting, though he was BPA for me when the Angels drafted Moore.
