Tonight both the Angels and Mariners had their best starting pitchers on the mound and both were very effective.
Seattle’s Luis Castillo threw 6 innings of shutout baseball but was pulled after giving up a Luis Rengifo single to start the 7th inning. A stolen base by Rengifo set him up to score on a Logan Davidson double down the right field line. Rengifo’s run was charged to Castillo, netting the Mariners starter a stat line of 6 IP, 1 R, 3 H, 5 K, 2BB.
6 innings of 1 run ball is also true for Angels starter Yusei Kikuchi. The Japanese hurler allowed 4 hits, stuck out 3, and walked 1. The run scored in the bottom of the 4th inning when Jorge Polanco doubled in Cal Raleigh.
There weren’t a lot of highlights early on. Just good pitching and some nice defense:
As is the case far too often, the Angels failed to put up a shutdown inning after scoring. Conor Brogdon entered the game in the bottom of the 7th and served up a long home run to Mitch Garver.
The 2-1 Mariners lead proved to be the winning score. Brogdon put up a zero in the bottom of the 8th but by then the damage was done.
Seattle did not get any further ahead in the AL West as Houston pummeled the Braves earlier in the evening. Nor did Seattle’s lead over Texas grow as the Rangers beat the struggling Mets in New York.
Game 3 from Seattle is tomorrow at 6:40.
The Urena no-hitter is over. Gave up a double on a *very* good pitch – 97 FB low and in to a lefty.
Eight innings, eighteen whiffs, 15 GBs, 8 Ks.
Seven innings, still no hits or walks for Urena.
Worth mentioning:
Not sure if anyone else is watching the Pandas game right now. There hasn’t been a lot to recommend Rocket City action of late, but Urena has thrown six innings tonight and has yet to surrender a hit or walk.
Definitely the best outing I’ve seen him this season – commanding both the slider and changeup, FB sitting mid-90s, touching 99 in places tonight.
11 groundball outs, only one flyout all game.
Didn’t have the debut of Denzer Guzman on my bingo card today.
Wonder if Neto is going to be out for a bit?
What’s with the last month? So much for injury luck.
Gus, Detmers, Schanuel, Neto, Mederos, Jo, d’Arnaud, Logan, Ward
It’s hitting a lot of teams right now – surprised it took this long for the Angels.
For today,
Woo has faced Angels 7 times, going 1-0, ERA 3.32
For the season, he’s 13-7, ERA 3.02
Farris makes his 3rd MLB start. he’s 1-0, ERA 2.45
Angels have won in the 2 starts he’s made.
According to MLB.com, lineup includes:
Moore at 2B
Denzer Guzman SS
Yes, Moore is back!! If he’s part of the future for 2026, then he needs to play in these meaningless games.
21-y/o Denzer Guzman makes his MLB debut
Farris the Menace
Angels have a -120 run differential and an expected win/loss record of 62-86. So, their record is 7 games better than expected. Guess that is what we have to consider to be a lucky season.
That fits what my Lyle-in eyes have been telling me. This team is last year’s team with better health and better luck.
I believe Kikuchi and Hendricks have brought some stability. Without those two, we’d be dead last, again.
Don’t rely on Hendricks being as good next year.
He’s a TOTAL JOURNEYMAN.
Parker Bridwell and Hansel Robles back at the old place 2019 back at the old place.
Agreed. My eyeball view of this team is “meet the new team, same as the old team, won’t be fooled again.”
YES! Won’t be fooled again is back! CtPG Guy is fully dilated!
Yes, the Pythagorean analysis confirms this.
Any deviation from the theorem going back to Scioscia I always said was due to the manager. Scioscia ’s teams seemed to always exceed it.
Likewise besides Jansen, a big chunk of credit goes to Wash. Half a season of Wash and 7 wins? Fits my ‘+15 WAR model’
Except wasn’t he the manager last year? So without him the 2024 team would have won 48 games?
I went and watched Sunny Day Real Estate. It was better than watching this game, though both involve Seattle and a bunch of men being emo.
Teodosio’s well over that .200 mark Moore could never reach. Hell, Davidson’s gonna eclipse Moore’s performance too. Not that it means a ton, but depth is nice if we have stumbled on some.
These have been some seriously meaningful as shit games since August first. I’m glad we didn’t trade anyone important. Then we’d all be so bored. Who would we even be watching right now?
Looks like Tanner Scott might be available soon. Get on it, Perry!
If you were watching the Dodgers game, what an ending.
Let’s go Giants!!!

Insta & MLB access depending on your g-g-g-generation
Saw some cool clips of the Giants having 2 walk off inside the park home runs too earlier this year too
That announcer sounds bona fide worsyer than Patty O-gasm.
Going to a padres game this weekend. I genuinely can’t remember the last time this late in September I was at an Angels game with playoff implications. Prob when Tori Hunter was on the team. So anyway, maybe that’s just what it sounds like to be in it??
I said that the Doyers needed to trade a bunch of their prospects for a Kenley and a Detmers. Their relief pitching has been getting torched.
