LA Angels Tuesday News Crash: Ron Sighting

Ron Washington dropped in to let everybody know he is OK. He had quadruple bypass surgery.

The Athletics just designated Luis Urias for assignment to make room for the returning Zack Gelof. Reed Garrett of the Mets is on the injured list with elbow inflammation.

The White Sox released Josh Rojas. The Dodgers designated infielder Buddy Kennedy for assignment. Right-hander Jose Urena cleared waivers and elected free agency.

Nice game yesterday, as we got the Good Soriano, and an O’Hoppe sighting!

2026 MLB schedule has been released.
Giants play the Yankees on Opening Day, March 25, 2026.
Everyone else starts March 26, 2026.

Angels begin the season on the road: 3-games at Houston, then 3 games against Cubs.
Home opener will be April 3, 2026 against Seattle.
We end our regular season at Seattle.

For today:
Corbin has faced Angels 6 times, going 3-0, with 4.45 ERA
For the season, he’s 6-9, ERA 4.61

Kikuchi has faced Rangers 8 times, going 4-1, ERA 5.30
For the season, he’s 6-8, ERA 3.42

Lineup has Trout returning, Moore at 2nd, Kavadas 1B.
And, good gracious, Rengifo is at 3B, where he’s made 8 errors, with 0.925 fielding average – 4th lowest in MLB (only Jonathan India, Amed Rosario, and Max Muncy are worse)

Angels prospect Samy Natera Jr. has been promoted to AAA Salt Lake — Natera had 2.64 ERA, .183 BAA and 33.7 K% with Rocket City before promotion and is Rule-5 eligible this winter, 15.3 BB% is alarming but this is potential late season 40-man tryout and 2026 big-league audition

And, because I am bored, I am gonna try something new and use stats and tools to figure out what a real tear down with a current value players would look like. Since I keep saying I wouldn’t mind it, how bad would it be?

Trade 1: Taylor Ward and Brock Burke to the Play Off hunting Reds for 50 grade AAA outfielder Hector Rodriguez, A ball OF prospect who is showing actual signs of progressing into his abilities Arnaldo Lantigua, and injured 2024 Comp Round draft pitcher Luke Holman who looks like a possible mid-rotation arm with a good pitch mix that will develop fast mix that we can get cheap cause he was TJS this year.

That’s:
AAA 50 grade OF
A Ball OF I think will be 50 grade. He hits the piss out of the ball.
A Ball former LSU Comp B pick starter with 2 games in A Ball this year.

Trade 2: Choke back the barf and trade Zach Neto to the Tigers so they solve their SS issues. We get back A Ball SS Bryce Rainer. He is a 55 grade prospect with 55 Hit/60 Power/55 Run/70 Arm. We also get AA 3B Max Anderson (45 grade with power) and AA Utility IF John Peck (40 grade) who is a really solid fielder at 3 positions and I actually think can hit like Rengifo.

That’s:
A stud 55 grade AA shortstop.
A 3B/1B prospect that can hit.
An AA utility infielder who is solid.

Trade 3: Barf more and trade Nolan Schanuel to the Guardians for 50 Grade power hitting 1B Ralphy Velazquez and 55 Grade AA shortstop Angel Genoa.

That’s:
A stud 50 grade SS
A Pete Alonso style AA 1B.

Trade 4: Logan O’Hoppe, Jo Adell and Ben Joyce to the Rays for Brailer Guerraro OF A+ (50 Grade), Trevor Harrison A+ SP (50 Grade), Colton Leadbetter AA OF (45 grade) and Rookie Ball C/OF Taitn Gray who I have a serious attraction to.

Thats:
A 50 Grade OF prospect
A 50 grade starter prospect in AA
A 45 Grade OF prospect in AA wityh speed and power.
A teenager beast C/OF.

Trade 5: Jose Soriano and Reid Detmers to the Cardinals for Leonardo Bernal AA Catcher (55 Grade), Jesus Baez AA 3B (50 Grade), Tekoah Roby AAA Starter (45 Grade), Joshua Baez AA OF (45 Grade), Tink Hence AA Starter (45 Grade with a 70 grade change up)

Thats:
A 55 Grade Catcher
A 50 Grade 3B
A Toolsy 45 grade AA OF
A 45 Grade AAA rotation depth starter
A 45 Grade AA starter who may be good

Trade 6:
If the Phillies don’t extend Schwarber
Trade Mike Trout to the Phillies along with 92M dollars. Get back AA reliever Wei Yun Pan (45 grade), A+ Short Stop Bryan Rincon (45 Grade) and Alex MacFarlane A+ Reliever (40 grade with 100 MPH FB)

That would be a tear down. But we’d have a system with at least 12 50+ grade prospects, maybe 14, at all of the positions around the field plus several good pitching prospects ahead of the kids we have in Rookie/A ball right now.

We’d use the money we won’t spend extending players that comes off the books with Rendon gone to pay that Trout money.

We’d likely trade Koochi too.

Wondering who you’d watch next year? I don’t care. This could be a long term bad ass team in a couple years….

But we don’t rebuild, we reload….

This is the doing of a twisted mind. You know a stripped down rebuild will never happen under Arte and still dedicated yourself to building such a plan. To that — respect.

Your knowledge and creativity is better served trying to figure out how to support Neto, Adell, Schanuel, O’Hoppe, Moore, Soriano, and Detmers with $30 million

Open a 4 million dollar bar tab for each of them that can be used nation wide?

But do they really need support when they have the prolific offense provided by Trout and Taylor Ward? Plus Jansen may be hanging out being gritty for 15 of those 30 million?

Pretty exciting.

Sadly I don’t think we should count on O’Hoppe at this point. And Moore is up in the air. So that makes the $30 million even harder to spread around.

We have to hope that new impact players emerge from the minors (not just replacement level) to make the $30 million actually put us over the top.

I absolutely love this and would love to see it happen. Very creative, thanks for the effort even though it’s more than likely an effort in futility. The team is going nowhere and has no hope. None of the players we would be trading will be around when the team wins, including Neto. It is also not surprising that Pineapple is vehemently against it. He wants to spend money on bad players along with some decent players. He wants Groundhog Day forever. If you want to win with the current roster and organization you will either have to do something like what you suggest or spend 300M on the payroll and still trade some of the guys on the team now. And even then, the team would have no depth and empty farm system. At some point people have to face reality. It won’t happen but it just points out how bad things really are. Fantasy at this point is our only hope. Neto would be the only player on the team worth keeping but he won’t be here when the team wins. I love it.

Actually, that is not a bad plan, although you would have to get Trout to agree to a trade, but the others are doable, Of course Arte would have to take down the banners in the front of the stadium BUT…. He could turn it into a marketing ploy and put big “?” Up there instead, in a sort of 60s Batman TV show style, and as one of the new players really breaks out, he could replace the “?” with the breakout player, and even do an “unveiling” to generate excitement !!!!

My guess is Trout would do it since he’d be heading to Philly and the team would be a shambles for 2-3 years while he gets older. I’d expect the “ZOOMZ! MIHK TOWT DEEMANS TRADE!” headlines.

Here are the areas I’d be surprised they spend any money at all:

C + 1B + 2B + SS +LF + CF +RF

that leaves Pitching and 3B for whatever budget Arte gives Perry, They could spend many on the OF but I doubt it – plenty of cheap options to supplement all three positions in house.

Roy Hobbs

If they bring everyone back, there isn’t really any place to add anyone except for a starting pitcher, and 3B if they don’t bring back Moncada. For the money, Moncada is probably the best option albeit accepting the risk of his staying on the field.

They can’t win more than they lose with this roster as it is so I’m not sure where any significant improvement comes from next year. Everyone likes all the current players and doesn’t want to trade any of them so it’s basically ground hog day until they actually assemble a different roster. The team is more likely to regress a little next year.

I wish that were not the case but it’s kind of what we’re looking at unless Perry decides to rebuild the roster this winter which is always a possibility but not likely.

I’ve advocated Arte needs to spend money on 3 things this winter:
3b, starting pitching, and manager.
he has a manager at a great price.

any going forward in 2026 will depend on how we invest in starting pitching.
we will get what we pay for.

I think Wash is a fielding coach and a mentor. Terry Francona is a manager but he cost $15 million per. As I said elsewhere Minasian and Wash are a package deal, neither should be here but probably will be until contracts expire.

The reason I suggested Moncada for next year is there isn’t really a good choice for 3B this winter without spending way more money than warranted or trading for one like has been suggested.

Our rotation is Kikuchi and Soriano. So we need a three starters plus injury replacements. 2B, 3B, and a third OF are needed unless we go with Teo. I don’t know what to make of the bullpen. There is nothing behind Neto and Shanny. I think that’s a ton of work.

Creativity will be required, which isn’t really Perry’s strength. Trades will be required.

Our current OF construction is bad. Ward will be in LF with Trout and Soler only capable of playing RF. Adell is good in RF but bad in CF.

The only one with any trade value is Adell, so I’d trade him to fill either 3B or a pitching spot. I’d prefer 3B.

That then creates a hole in CF and I don’t exactly love the free agent options, but that’s what I’ll be doing in my off season piece most likely.

I wholeheartedly agree and that’s why I’m really looking forward to your IIWPM. 😉 I also agree with your assessment of the OF. One of Trout, Soler, or Adel need to be moved and it’s not Trout. Both Ward and Adell are having career years. If Perry was smart, he’d trade both of them this winter. He needs to rebuild and refresh the roster.

Born_in_59

I hate the idea of losing either, but I think you’re right that both Ward and Adell will need to go to move forward. I was even considering they could non-tender Ward and let him be an unrestricted free agent. That way the team can save on what will be a hefty raise and Ward can negotiate his best deal.

Jeff Joiner

Ward still has trade value. Like Turk’s has said, Cincy is in serious need of thump and can rotate him through DH and LF. The Cubs could lose Tucker. The Padres and Dodgers could use LF thump.

You get something of value for Ward.

The double edged sword here is that the LF free agents suck. That both makes Ward more valuable as a trade chip and difficult to replace.

Born_in_59

Reply to  Jeff Joiner

Yes, Ward still has value but he’s going to get a big pay bump next year. He may very well be worth it, but I feel he’ll regress from a career year so if they don’t trade Ward in the off-season, he’ll probably lose value.

It’s likely time to face the fact that we are not in a “replace” type of spot. That’s why rebuilds happen. You don’t have enough talent to get future talent without decimating your current roster.

I hope they have the brains to create a RSN to have a revenue stream that doesn’t have to be shared with the rest of the league. Kind of dumb this hasn’t already happened.

Why can’t they just go to Netflix and sign a deal for them to exclusively show Halos games for the next few seasons? Netflix is trying to beef up their live sports content, and signing a deal relying on cable tv seems like a losing venture given the way watching habits are moving. I’m sure there’s obstacles I’m not aware of, but it’d be great if they could align with a streaming service.

milehigh

Reply to  2pints

Most likely the structure that a Netflix type would agree to would not allow the team to have a controlling stake and obviously the team would not own the RSN. Thus the team would have to dump revenues into the sharing pool.
There won’t be a Neto extension until after Rendon’s money is off the books and/or after the possible lockout. All I see coming is a couple middling pitchers to replace Hendricks and Anderson. And I’m not sure they will replace Anderson.

I think of that meeting where the Angels, whose primary sponsor appears to be a suicide prevention website, explains to Netflix that they’d be a great fit for a national audience… sounds like a skit

2pints

It wouldn’t be about reaching a national audience though, more to help kickstart Netflix in their inevitable live sports domination. They’ve already started with NFL xmas day games and prize fights (it hurts to call Tyson vs Paul a “prize fight”, but it essentially was given the attention it got), which, yes, are national, but if they started signing an MLB team or two every couple of seasons they’d start chipping away like they did by licensing other networks shows to help them grow (Breaking Bad for instance). Maybe its not possible, or the Halos are the wrong team to start it, but the streamers will be taking over live sports in the next decade or two, so might as well try and be the first MLB team to dive in. Creating a RSN is a way of the past.

Marcotor

Except it doesn’t work that way. The Yankees, Dodgers, Cubs, et. al that have big local deals, don’t just get to keep all those billions. Under the last CBA teams put 48% of “defined local net revenues” into the pool, then get back 1/30th of the total pool, which includes the other shared rights fees. That includes any owned RSNs, partnerships, etc. Yes giving up $240 million to keep $260 million is better, but it ain’t half a billion or whatever numbers people pull out of the air.

I don’t see any reason to not let Wash manage next year.

I’ve made it clear that I think a lot of the strategy bitching is stupid because I have yet to see the “good” manager with a roster and pitching staff like ours who is celebrated for all his great strategy. We will have that same roster strength next season give or take. If they over perform… poof! Wash is likely magically a strategist.

More likely we still suck. But we will hopefully be developing players we can then watch leave in free agency. It would be good to have Wash around since Neto, Adell, Nolan, O’Hoppe seem to really like him and respond to him. Hopefully Moore and some yet to be found kids will do the same.

I’d worry more about getting that “genius” manager when our A grade roster has to go head to head with other A grades to see who can eek out two extra wins in a season and then win in the play offs. Till then, I’ll take the guy that creates a good developmental atmosphere.

It’s not like we have to extend him.

I’d worry more about who is coaching and managing our farm teams.

Asking the players if they would accept Wash back as manager would be a way of being him back for one final year would be the right move as the majority would accept him with open arms maybe. As for Montgomery, he went over as well as a lead ballon, but he I’m sure would then return to bench coach with a promise of returning in ’27, as he is PTP’s handpicked successor. While not being a fan of our GM, I will concede that working for Arturo is no day at the beach. If he were replaced, it would maybe be an Eppler all over again and at least Minasian has a plan of sorts and we may not agree with it, we all hope that it works out.

Virginia Slims? LOL

I still trip out on the fact the liquor store across the street from my house would sell me Virginia Slims for my mom when I was 7 years old. I remember when we first moved in she walked over there with me and my sister and told them she’d be sending us to buy her cigarettes, and they were cool with it. This was 1987.

I remember my mom sending me into the 7-11 to pick up her cigs. More Reds(as opposed to More Menthols).

I smoked Kools for years. Luckiest thing ever, I never got past smoking a pack a day and I generally had a pack last about three days. Then in about 2016 I just was tired of them a quit. I just didn’t get hooked on em as bad as some thankfully.

I do miss it though. And sometimes I hit a vape pen for some chemicals. Kools were great on a hot night at a bar and I liked the ritual stop, go out, light the thing etc etc etc talk to other smokers. But I DO NOT miss the smell etc.

Sounds kind of like my dad. He used to smoke Kools. He was home with us kids (we were little at the time) one night, and ran out. He decided that if he could do without them for one night, he could do without them period. Quit cold turkey.

That was my grandmother’s brand. We used to have (a lot of) packs of Kool playing cards, although I’m not sure where she got them.

I too am 73 yrs old and smoked for 40 years until the “Big One” hit and I am paying for it currently. 15 years have passed and have lost my best friend to lung cancer and many friends in addition; it’s the dumbest thing that we could all have done, but we all made that choice and it was a bad one for sure. Marlboro and Winston (Taste good like a cigarette should) were the 2 big names. Heck I even switched to Marlboro lights thinking that would work, sheesh what a dope I was. Now very few still smoke, but vaping is still around, and it’s said that vaping is even worse. Good news is smoking related deaths are falling quickly.

My bro-in-law smoked or about 30 years, no more of course, due to the lung cancer he farmed for those three decades.

My Dad smoked 3 packs a day of Pall Mall non-filters from the time he was 16 years old until when he was 33. In 1960 he quit cold turkey because smoking was killing his “wind” when he had to chase down bad guys (he was a cop LA Sheriff working at that time in East LA). He substituted coffee for cigarettes and always had a cup of coffee in his hand from the time he quit until when he passed away in 2003.

Remember the good old days of smoking sections in restaurants, even on Airplanes (for what good it would do), if you worked in an office people where smoking, back in the 60’s and 70’s it was pretty common no matter where you where that people would be smoking even in hospitals. It seems pretty crazy now, but I don’t think the cigarette companies where even required to put the “health warning” on packs of cigarettes until 1969.

Doctors smoked in the 50s and early 60s, including some pediatricians!!! “Let me check out your kid while I burn this Camel, don’t worry, it’s filtered! “ 😆😆😆😆😆

My academic advisor in 1980 smoked a pipe. Hell, in the late ’80s I worked in an office where people smoked cigars.

I tried smoking a pipe while I was in the Navy, trying to look more mature I was all of 17 when I enlisted. I don’t think I ever really learned to smoke it right. After falling asleep with my pipe in my mouth and almost setting myself on fire, I figured it was OK for me to look my age.

They still haven’t been able to clarify to me how vaping is as bad or worse. I keep looking for it too cause I’m paranoid.

All I ever find are people who have problems because they either vape 1000 times more than a human should, vape weird ass home made THC sludge that hurts them…. and that’s it.

Oh. And the kids. They just say “the kids” and that’s supposed to stop all the questions and make me es scared.

It’s funny, when I quit smoking my doctor told me to vape some if I needed it cause it’s basically harmless unless I just OD on nicotine itself. I ask my doctors every year if there’s any new news of it killing people. Nope. Not really.

Just, you know, don’t replace breathing with vape.

The American Heart Association will give you some specifics:

In addition to being addictive, nicotine affects the development of the brain in teens, kids and fetuses. E-cigarette vapor may contain diacetyl (causes lunge disease), carcinogens, volatile organic compounds, and heavy metals. The liquid in e-cigarettes is dangerous if swallowed, breathed, or absorbed through the skin or eyes.

If vaping helps you resist cigarettes, it might be a net benefit for you (that’s your own judgment call based on your personal circumstances), but we know enough to understand that vaping is not harmless and that people will be healthier if they never start vaping or smoking.

That’s the thing. I’m not a child and I am stuck with this brain. I drive in SoCal… so the “may contain” threat of “you could maybe be exposed to some stuff…. yeah, like on a freeway? Or the ratty old house I can afford to live in?

It’s just s super long reach from the obviously bad smokes, but they still try to act like it’s this cloud of looming death above us all.

Perry’s contract runs thru 2026 and Wash has a club option for 2026.

I would run it back next year with both guys. Give all the younger players and prospects a long runway and evaluate who will be a part of the future. Plus, it’ll be the last season of Rendone’s contract.

The Neto-Wash relationship has been my favorite storyline of the last 2 seasons.

“He’s like a father figure to me,” Neto said. “He’s one of my best friends. And it’s just cool to see him out here and be able to see him where it all started.”

I would prefer Washington just act as a “special assistant” to the GM. And jettison Monty. Let Perry ride out his contract and be ready for the hiring of the exact same thing with a different name, because nothing will change as long as the “Three Horseman of the Baseball Apocalypse”, Moreno, Carpino, and Kuhl, are in charge.

Does Perry try and swing some big trades or signings for next season in an attempt to field a better team so he gets an extension? Thats my worry with a GM on a short contract, the long-term plans (lol) can go out the window.

Arturo has the veto so I doubt Minasian will do much besides bring up prospects who aren’t ready or throw a bunch of crap against the wall with washed up vets hoping a couple of them pan out.

Probably get a Navapile in the bullpen and on the bench, nothing else.
