Got Swept Postgame

This one the good guys were winning for a couple of innings, thanks to a Taylor Ward homer in the first inning.

The Cubs pecked away in the third and fourth innings to make it 2-1 Cubs.

In the fifth inning, Michael Busch singled, Kyle Tucker walked, and Seiya Suzuki also singled. Andrew Chafin came in to pitch for Kyle Hendricks and Pete Crow-Armstrong hit a sacrifice fly to make it 3-1 Cubs. Carson Kelly singled. 4-1 Cubs.

In the sixth inning, the Angels mounted some offense. Zach Neto singled and stole second base before Mike Trout struck out. (Ahem.) Taylor Ward doubled. 4-2 Angels.

Jo Adell grounded out while sending Taylor Ward to third. Luis Rengifo reached on a fielding error by Dansby Swanson. 4-3 Cubs.

Bryce Teodosio made a nice catch.

In the bottom of the ninth, the Angels tried a little rally. Luis Rengifo singled, Yoan Moncada got a one out walk. Christian Moore struck out. So did Bryce Teodosio. Game over. Angels lost by a final score of 4-3.

I just saw a clip of Cal Raleigh hitting his 49th HR and the Mariners’ announcer was pretty excited, calling it a once in a lifetime moment. I guess that’s true if you’re 3 years old or less since he broke the record setv4 years ago.

Short version: I hate the Mariners , their announcers and their fans

Dodgers. Yankees. Mariners. Childhood Cancer. In that order.

Other than that, and Stevie Nicks, life’s pretty tolerable.

Raleigh just signed for 6 years (2025-2030) @ $105M, all guaranteed.
That works out to $17M/yr, making him 3rd highest paid catcher (Realmuto, of the Phillies, averages $23M/yr).
And, in the last year of the contract, he’ll be 34-y/o (Trout is 34 now).

Darn good signing by the Mariners.

It’s not that the team is crap. I knew that in March. I don’t mind that, everything that gets good starts out shitty. But another year of doing NOTHING to get better other than a little more grit this time around? And we know we are basically running back the same squad next year? More watching for Trout’s mid-level mile stones? Counting the saves Jansen gets at the ass end of his career?

I really like Nolan, Neto, O’Hoppe and Adell. If I squint I can see them as a future core. But I’d also like to trade them and Ward/Detmers and burn it all down with a new owner if I could order that up. And fk team. New uniforms? For the love of god. Having visited a few other teams this year and then ended at the Big A… fking RED. How do we have more stupid ass red shit than THE REDS?

Just burn the whole thing down. Fk 2002. All the member berries all over the stadium are pathetic. Trade Trout too for what ever you can get. Burn all of it. Hoffy? even our hot dogs are off brand trash. Please. Alaz Khan. Bless this org with your light and cleansing flame.

Those players are out for blood when it comes to Caitlin Clarke and Sophie Cunningham.
Players will hit these two, smile after committing the fouls, and then laugh about it while sitting on the bench.

Some of the fouls are just flat out intentional.

You’d think the WNBA executives would do something about it.

I did almost seven hours of driving to get heat exhaustion and watch last nights awesome game so I barely listened to todays game. I was all wrung out from all the puking. I’m guessing I’ll wait another few years till I bother with that shit again…. or maybe I’ll just get into the WNBA, God knows the sports media really wants me to give it a try. Probably more exciting too.

Being kind of out of it, must have missed all the meaningful huzzahs and victory fist punching when Ward got his 30th HR. Watching Mike Trout in person made me a little more suspicious that Mike Trout’s not very good anymore.

Pitchers are still dropping like flies. Wheeler. Montas. Is Michael King back yet? Mederos is out now. Sheesh.

Well, at least we had that Doyer sweep. I can hold onto that for the next three years of 70 win teams since it’s what we got by standing pat for the meaningful push. Rad.

Let’s go Royals, Reds, Padres, Brewers, Tigers and all teams not Doyers and Yankees.

All it took was some AC and water. But I still hear the lingering call…. like screeching lesbians in the night…. the song of sub-par basketball action in the summer…. someone make it stop.

I need that football season to start. The draft and trade deadline broke me as far as giving two shits about the Angels. Having a farm that’s not really worth watching makes things a lot harder. Now it’s the dog days where the younger players I like kind of peter out.

It’s like 1;45 AM in a dive bar. The WNBA gets more attractive.

Just to put things in perspective, but for the +5 games in the lucky column this year, this team would be:

56-74

That would be a .430 winning percentage which translates to 69 wins. That is probably closer to what this team realistically is : ie 70 wins. Last year was a remarkably unlucky year.

I can buy into Turk’s 74 win theory.

Honestly, not even a theory, least of all mine. It’s just a simple average of seasonal wins in the post-Dipoto era.

If you think last year was an exception, then 76 wins is an average post-Dipoto season. If you think last year isn’t necessarily an outlier to be thrown out, then 74 is now an average season.

Where I’ll depart from simple math, and hazard an opinion, is to say that I think any fan who views the current season as ‘progress’ is simply eager to be gaslit and involved in willing self-deception.

When failure is so consistent for a decade that each annual result remains +/- 4 games around the mean, it’s something notable. The narrative of progress is a ruse. 2021-23 is right around the corner.

My inflection point for change is the point at which the team strings together two consecutive seasons of 82 wins or better – as that would depart from a stretch that is becoming almost generational in duration.

And my definition of a “competitive” window is two consecutive seasons of 85+ win teams, as that’s typically the threshold for wild card contention, and is also coincidentally the last winning season (85-77) that the Angels experienced – the last under a GM with a cumulative winning record.

Another losing season. I will also remember 6-0 against the Doyers, the six best games of the season. The ones at Anaheim Stadium were amazing, of course, our boys then flop to 2-7 since. Thanks for the memories.

What in the world has happened to Trout? Seriously, has he had a vision exam? It’s sad, an amazing talent, the best the Angels will probably ever have again.

He’s getting strait up owned by rookies and fastball dependent scrubs while he begs the gods for walks or a pitch that runs into his bat. It’s just sad.

On pace to win maybe 77 games. Back to normal as Turk would say.

At the team’s current winning percentage, the team is on pace for 76 wins, which is the exact mean number of wins of all full Angels seasons between 2016-2023. So yep, dead on target.

(Emphasis ‘dead’.)

If you include the one anomalous year of 2024, the mean # of wins becomes 74. They’d just have to go 13-19 down the final stretch to nail it.

Seems perfectly achievable for the team to establish a new normal of 74 wins in the Eppler-Minasian era.

The problem is the Orioles are 1 game back of us and the A’s and Twins are 2 back. Talk about meaningful games.

If we ever hire a GM and gas the C Suite he’s gonna need to consider a horrific tear down still. Trade Neto and anything else with value. It’s a shitty thing to consider. But even more shitty is to think about things like the fact that we need a new stadium and TV deal and we stink.

It’s time to start weighing the trade off of sucking like this through 2027 BUT that being enough suck to convince Arte his business is done here.

so competitive in terms of matching Angels seasons

Turk's Teeth

That’s the problem. I think management and ownership have indeed convinced themselves that a 72-80 win season is competitive. Basically the minimum viable product (MVP) – just enough to keep butts in seats.

When Arte says he has unfinished business, mark his words – they’re not chosen randomly. It’s business.

The goal is not to win the game, it’s simply to succeed while trying – make a profit and raise franchise valuations. It’s all business on the margins – he’s not preoccupied with on-field success, otherwise things would have changed radically some time ago.

This team needs a new owner, new FO and about 75% of it’s fans to head off the trail and die quietly. Then it needs about 18 roster spots upgraded and a new farm with at least two of those teams relocated. That’s all, then we’ll be at least as good as the Rangers.

What if we tried being The BizzaroDogers? Like the Dodgers but red? Find some scummy old money family to buy the team at the head of some group called Sportzfun Corp Inc and let AI run the team? Have no FO. Just a bank of computers?

I’m down to try it.
