Angels Lose Postgame

OK. So what we had was Tyler Anderson versus Assad. Anderson was nothing special. Kyle Tucker homered to make it 1-0 Cubs. In the third inning Seiya Suzuki hit a sacrifice fly to score Dansby Swanson. 2-0 Cubs.

We got through the next inning without any scoring, unfortunately.

In the bottom of the fifth inning, Yoan Moncada homered to make it 2-1 Cubs.

Don’t worry. A Logan O’Hoppe double play and a Christian Moore strikeout were enough to finish the fifth inning. We can still complain.

In the sixth inning, Nolan Schanuel got a two out hit by pitch. Mike Trout walked. It’s like a rally, but without the cool stuff such as scoring runs.

In the bottom of the seventh, Yoan Moncada homered again. 2-2 tie.

Jo Adell then struck out. So did Logan O’Hoppe. So did Christian Moore.

I didn’t really notice anybody doing anything in the eighth inning. Detmers allowed no runs. Off we go to Kenley Jansen in the ninth.

Jansen gave up a homer to Pete Crow-Armstrong to make it 3-2 Cubs.

In the ninth inning: StrikeTroutTM followed by groundout followed by strikeout. Game over.

If my calculation is correct, Angels magic number for playoff elimination is: 37

Calculation:
Games in a season (162) – number of wins a team in the last remaining playoff spot has (69, Seattle and NY) – Number of losses Angels have (67) + 1

I just want to enjoy the rest of this season and hope Trout plays every game.
I also want to see Teo and Moore play every game – let these 2 prove they do not belong on the roster for 2026.

For today:
Cubs rookie Horton has never faced the Angels.
For the season, he’s 7-4, ERA of 3.08

Mederos has never faced the Cubs.
For the season, he’s 0-1, ERA of 5.14

This will be the 4th rookie pitcher Angels have faced in August (that I can remember – 2 via the A’s, 2 via the Cubs…. there could be more), and 3 of those rookies have baffled Angels hitters. Let’s see how we do against Horton.

B-ref calculates 27.
Number of combined losses by this team and wins by the leader that will eliminate the team from contention. The highest of these numbers is the magic number for the leading team to clinch.

So if the Angels lose and a team ahead of them wins it’s -2. So if they lose 14 and any of the teams ahead of them win 14 – they are eliminated.

If they win and a team ahead of them wins it’s -1.

If the Angels win and all the teams ahead of them lose it’s a zero (ie no effect).

So even if they win 20 and lose 14 over the last 34, if any of the teams ahead of them go 14-20 they will be eliminated.

19th pick in 2020 MLB Draft………We picked Reid Detmers at #10

And? Detmers has accumulated the 4th most WAR of any prospect drafted in the first round in 2020. 21 of 36 picks have not even accumulated positive WAR yet.

It was a totally reasonable pick, and still is – the Angels have gotten more value out of it than 27 other teams, and they’ve outperformed their draft position in terms of ROI.

Of roughly a dozen prep bats selected in round one, only PCA and Soderstrom have become impact players to date. Seems a weird thing to emoji-rage about.

Dana lives!
completed seven innings for the first time since May 6 and struck out a career-high 13, including three in his final frame to cap his outing after 99 pitches (65 strikes).

Did he do this against the 2018 Boston Red Sox (won 108 games…..probably not).

Wow, long outing, nice. We have time to just let Dana cook, 2027 or beyond

For me there are only 2 goals left for the season because everything else is out the window. First and foremost is fending off the A’s to not finish in the cellar again. Pretty pathetic goal but have to have something to route for. Second I hope to get my boy back to a few more games. He’s almost 6 and has fell in love with baseball this year. I think I’ve gone to more games this season than the past 5 combined. He loves it and is obsessed with Neto. He was so excited last night to bring home his O’Hoppe bobble head and put it on his dresser next to his Neto one. Fun stuff to be a part of even if the big picture doesn’t look great for our team.

Cool story- I hope many games are in your future with him.

My goal for the week: Aaron Boone should be available any minute now; we should hire him to manage.

I’m usually wrong but I’ll go out on a limb and say the Yankees won’t fire Boone. I think Cashman knows to many injuries and too many other holes in the team this season. And they can still make a WC.

Besides, Boone would be to competent and expensive for Arte.

You can just make a replay of every season since and including 2016, leaving out the anomaly of 2024, and call it 2026. Nobody will ever know.

I’m dead to 2025. Resurrection scheduled in less than an hour! K-State Football kicking off the season in Ireland. And it’s just ASU picked ahead of them in the Big 12. There is big CFB hopium unleashing this morning.

Was at game tonight as I was invited. I ordered nothing other than a couple beers for my host and just watched. The level of NOISE is just annoying. It’s exactly the opposite vibe of chill and relax. It’s like ARENT WE ALL JUST HAVING THE BESTEST TIME!!

And then the Jansen intro. Jeebus. I mean really it’s just bad theater for the masses. Whatever happened to just coming out of the bullpen, running to the infield and throwing the ball.

I’m old but it feels like this game is more about trying to keep everyone jacked up versus just chilling and enjoying a game on a Friday night.

I can’t speak to your personal preferences Fan. But people enjoy games in different ways. I actually hate it at Angels Stadium when it is silent and dull. Not only does it seem “dead”, but I think the players are less enthused.

Just look at the energy in that Dodgers series — 44k + each game (and loud !) and the players were jacked up. You could feel the energy and the players were uplifted by it. So, I have to disagree a bit here …

It’s not the real excitement I have a problem with. It’s the clown show psyche up stuff. The super loud music and “let’s get loud!” What’s wrong with some chill when it’s not an exciting moment?

It’s a baseball game not a KISS concert. It’s ADHD central.

Well, I do agree with you about the “Let’s Get Loud” command on the score board. It’s stupid and infantile. Even the Cubs announcers were making fun of it on their broadcast…. they were saying the fans need to be told when to make noise etc…

They’re right. Can you imagine that in St. Louis, or in New York or at Wrigley Field ?? No way in hell.

This is clearly photoshopped. The Angels are the most stupidest dumbest baseball team and it’s impossible that any other team would be this stupid and dumb.

Couple of years ago Bro-in-law and I went to a Rams-Commanders game at SoFi. About every two minutes the PA announces “Whose house? Rams house!” at F-35 takeoff noise levels. Got old, and that game really didn’t need help to be fun.

I had the exact same experience at the last NFL game I went to and it has made me realize I am not going to any anymore NFL games. Would rather sit on the couch and watch the game and that is maybe my biggest complaint of what it feels like the Angels are trying to do. They are trying to turn Baseball into an NFL type experience and for me it just doesn’t fit

I actually really enjoyed that closer intro when I watched it live a few weeks ago. I wish they would do it for other star players. The angels stadium announcer is a snooze fest along with the dj.

It might arguably be okay if Jansen was actually a “star player”.

Nothing is better than the Hansel Robles intro. That was so weird and unnecessary that it made it entertaining.

It’s prestidigitation.
Management doesn’t want fans to focus on the fact that Angels are a horrid team, lacking fundamentals in every area (hitting, fielding, pitching, running, managing).

So, they have all the bells and whistles for distraction.

Great point. I also think it’s due to a belief that people in this time need constant distraction and entertainment. I find it exhausting not exhilarating.

That’s because the Dodgers are a well run Org that respects baseball traditions while still moving into the present. The baseball experience for many of us is way more than flashing lights and extra loud amplified music. It WAS a time to relax, take a deep breath and chill while taking in a game.

Wrigley is such a great experience. It takes you back to baseball’s roots, then the game we grew up with and also the more modern version. The experience is super deferential to “America’s pasttime”roots while still staying current and not trying to be the NFl. As a result everyone can enjoy the baseball experience while also relaxing. The food is great too.

obligatory Perry bashing: He has said over the years that he didn’t like the offers he was getting and thus didn’t make deals, but isn’t it his job to know about all players and thus be able to be creative and figure out deals that would work?

One scenario, and I’m not saying this is what happens, is that he talks to a team about Jansen, they offer a player or two, Perry rejects that and calls another team which does the same. But surely Perry and his staff would ask for a player and if that doesn’t work, know enough about the other team’s farm to suggest alternatives. But I don’t get the sense that Perry works that way.

I don’t believe Arte tells Perry who to trade with or who to trade for. Arte might constrain Perry in free agency but not in drafting and not in trading so it’s all on Perry…in my opinion.

Trout has to be more aggressive in his abs. He’s here to drive in runs, not get on base. That 2-0 meatball down the middle could have been the game. Also I don’t want Ward back. Whatever he’s going to make in FA is more than he’s worth. His defense is bad and we need to improve in that area. I think it’s a lot more likely a defense first player stumbles into a good offensive year than a bat first player stumbles into a good defensive year.

They need to be outside and low for him to swing at it. The previous AB for Ward was worse. 3 fastballs, middle of the zone, bat never moved. Sit down Ward!!!

He’s looking for the off-speed too much. Yeah, it is easier to hit the off-speed out of the park if you guess right, but with Palencia throwing gas at 99-100mph you have to look fastball. Maybe with two outs and nobody on you take a different approach…

But I think in that spot leading off the bottom of the 9th down by 1 run you just need to get on base …. Ward and Adell are following. In that spot he just needs to look fastball and try to put the ball in play… so I partially agree with you but not totally.

The book is and has been on Trout. He cannot hit the high cheese, for years now. He likes the ball down low and I think he is going up to the plate, patiently waiting to get one there. He used to be a comfortable 2-strike hitter, not so much now.

And even if he didn’t we likely wouldn’t score in the 9th so who pitches the 10th? I guess zef, who could have pitched the 9th…but then Kenley would have pitched the 10th and we’d have the same problem

He burned Chafin for just one batter, why not stretch him to pitch the 7th? You have Zefer, Stephenson, Burke and Detmers to cover the rest of the game. Jansen only comes in with a lead.

JackFrost

Reply to  FungoAle

Yeah, agree. I have been saying something similar for awhile now; namely that Monty only knows how to manage one way : by strict rules. And that means never throw a guy more than one inning.

I mean, Detmers could easily have gone 2 innings. That in addition to what you said about Chafin. So, really even if the game were still tied in the 9th you would not have to bring Kenley in there… You just need to use your resources more efficiently instead of pulling guys so quickly.
