Angels Win Postgame

OK. So how did the Angels do against Charlie Morton? In the first inning, Mike Trout got a two out single then Taylor Ward doubled to make it 1-0 Angels.

In the bottom of the second inning, Tigers center Fielder Wenceel Perez tripled. Andy Ibanez singled to drive in Perez. Javier Baez doubled and Jake Rogers hit a sacrifice fly to right to make it 2-1 Tigers.

In the fourth inning, Taylor Ward got a one out single. Yoan Moncada was hit by a pitch. Jo Adell homered to make it 4-2 Angels.

In the bottom of the fourth, the Tigers brought in a run on a sacrifice fly to make it 4-3 Angels. A double by Gleyber Torres brought in another run to tie the game.

In the top of the fifth inning, Nolan Schanuel single and then Taylor Ward homered. 6-4 Angels.

Charlie Morton was driven from the game. Rafeal Montero came in and retired the next two Angels in order.

There was no further scoring until the Luis Rengifo home run in the top of the eighth inning. 7-4 Angels.

Nothing further happened. Kenley Jansen with the save.

National League vs American league so far 2025
61-51 National League edge according Yahoo sports
Start with better hitting and better starting pitching……We suck at both.

I was trying to be all Pineapple and find something cool in the MiLB. It had been a few weeks since I really looked at hitting stats for guys on our farm…. because it makes me want to drink and kick puppies.

It makes me happy that Josh Crouch is still catching in our system. Sure, he makes no contact, but 7 HR in 148 ABs aint bad. It sucks, but i want some Crouch.

Sweet Jesus there is literally no one who can hit in Rocket City. That’s why all the pitchers took steps back. Crippling depression.

Tri City? Why? I guess Ben Gobbel is interesting at 3B as long as you ignore that he’s old for High A and he chokes as soon as he gets to AA every year. I had high hopes for Randy De Jesus…. fart. Cole Fontenelle at least looked semi-baseball at High A instead of lost and confused. I still wish he’d get good. Rio Foster? I guess?

The good news is we didn’t trade for any prospects so pretty much all of these guys can repeat fifth grade, I mean High A, next year.

Sweet Lord there is nothing to see here hitting wise.

Build a hitting lab next people. I don’t think I’ve ever seen an entire system where finding a guy who managed a .700 OPS with a .230 BA was a high point outside Rada, who I know some of you love like a dog with weird eyes, but he kinda sucks too.

Yeah, the hitting in the system is atrocious lmao.
The Latin American kids are having good years — Rada, Guzman, Alvarez, Lugo, Davalillo.

The only other real standouts are the 2 HSers from the 2023 draft — Rio Foster and Raudi Rodriguez.

Rio Foster (A+)
279 PA
.235 / .379 / .376
10 doubles
2 triples
6 HR
6 SB (85.7% success rate)
14.5% BB rate
27.3% K rate

Since 6/19
131 PA
.303 / .446 / .562 = 1.008 OPS
6 doubles
1 triple
5 HR
14.5% BB rate
23.7% K rate

Raudi Rodriguez (A)
448 PA
.254 / .347 / .438
16 doubles
11 triples
11 HR
29 SB (85.3% success rate)
10.5% BB rate
24.1% K rate

Rio has late bloomer traits, and shows the benefit of mining the junior colleges for raw talent. He’s another find from Perry’s Georgia team, one of the 2-3 wells they go to again and again (have to think it’s a scout or two brought over from his Braves tenure, or vestigial connections there).

He looked to be bottoming out in May/June, but he’s fixed something, and I’d like to see if he can sustain it in AA.

Raudi is the exact same profile really – another late round Georgia kid – but he’s old for his level, so I remain skeptical until he’s promoted and can keep an otherwise balanced approach stable against guys with advanced secondaries. Both of these guys probably have fourth outfielder ceilings, but they’re the kind of athletes you want more of in a healthier system.

Idk why I wrote HS, I knew they were from the JC circuit. Anyways haha, I’m excited for Rio.

The power seems legit

You were half right. 🙂

Rio was JC, Raudi was HS.

Ivan Tatis, late-round Georgia prepster from this year’s draft, came from the same private baseball academy as Raudi did. So I’m really not exaggerating when I say they go to the same wells again and again.

That’s because a cheap price tag and loyalty probably come first in this organization.
We could raid and plunder the top NCAA college baseball teams (mostly the SEC just like in college football) for top shelf level coaching, scouting and player development, instead hiring old guys like Wash or Lou Piniella who’s 81…

From a hitting standpoint, the system is largely what it was in the offseason. At that point, I was saying: don’t sleep on Guzman or Rada, and maybe just maybe Placencia, because there’s really no one else to watch now. Anything that emerges will come from the DSL or will be new acquisitions or complete surprises.

Guzman and Rada made good, though both face challenges ahead to be more than reserves (Guzman due to whiff, Rada due to strength). But I’m fairly confident now that each are MLB players in some capacity. Placencia has made some progress, and his stats are better than they may look on their face, because the Northwest League is where bats go to die.

But the thin hope in this system remains with the young pitching, and the strong backstops they’ve paired with it. A lot of the more advanced arms in the system have taken steps back or have abandoned SP hopes and are definitively relievers now, and they’ve put innings caps on some of the more promising guys (Johnson, Hurtado) to slow their roll.

The club really needed that bat-first draft though. They really needed it.

This team gave away some games after the ASB but I’ll just say 3 were horribly bad. They should be 59-58 like 3 games out.

Had the same thought last night. I counted 4 bad losses post-ASB.

— vs. PHI up 4-2 in the 6th
— vs. NYM up 5-2 in the 7th
— vs. CHW lost 1-0 with 1 hit lol
— vs. DET up 5-3 in the 8th

Could/should be 60-57.

Call up somebody, anybody. Campero has to go.

Most 2025 Angels of games. Strike out 200 times. Run into good team at it’s weakest. Hit some home runs. Win game. Reality can suck it!

As 4th OF I actually don’t mind Campero/Teo. Say we sign Bader this winter. A line up with Trout, Bader, Neto, Pereza, Moore, Teo and Campero in it would actually be pretty fleet of foot… no power, but fun.

I remember half joking that Adell would be fine with me if he hit .230 with 30 HR. I thought that was funny cause I was talking about Jo Adell. Well shut mah mouth.

Gotta love Rengifo. Trade deadline passes. Dude goes off.

Well. We are just six games back in the Wild Card race. Been a great nine days of meaningful. Probably shouldn’t give any more kids a chance to play. Too important to stay in it and win it till the last week and stuff.

Should probably hold onto Montgomery as manager too. Can’t break this band up.

I’m actually warming to signing Bellinger. No QO attached, so no draft loss, and you’re getting him at age 30. Slots right into corner OF as a Ward replacement, lefty, still some speed. Three straight years of above average performance.

If you can get him for 20-25M per year for five years, it’s a solid value and an upgrade over Ward. Also the sort of splashy name Moreno loves. Billboard guy with Neto and Adell.

I fear the age curve won’t look good on guys like Suarez, Schwarber and Tucker, but Bellinger seems to have righted the ship at present.

So… trade Ward?

It’s really an either-or or both-and scenario.

If they want to keep Ward, they can play Bellinger in CF for a year. He’s more than capable of playing all three OF positions (though I think he would be plus in leftfield – the metrics support that).

But if they can trade Ward for something beneficial, then they can try Rada out in CF, with a guy like Teodosio as a reserve (or some other cheap acquisition). It’s worth trying for a year, and would finally produce a defensively solid OF at every position (w/ Adell at his natural home in RF).

The clear fact is that Ward is on an expiring contract, and there’s nothing in the minors for the next two years that is an obvious replacement. An acquisition of Bellinger plugs a hole without blocking future solutions. One more year, both Ward and Rendon are off the books, and there’s more capital for in-house improvements.

But if they get a proper return in the offseason for Ward? Sure, trade him.

Just kidding….LOL!!!
I don’t like old guys in charge of young players unless he’s a established icon like Bill Belichick, Nick Saban, or Mike Krzyzewski.

Another fantastic outing today from the Italian Stallion, Samuel Aldegheri, in AA:

7 innings
1 ER
4 hits
2 walks
6 strikeouts

His last 4 starts:
26 innings
1.38 ERA
0.92 WHIP
22 strikeouts

He’s the exact same Sam Aldegheri we knew in 2024…at the same level!

It’s almost like… prematurely promoting a command lefty to a role he was unfamiliar with and not ready for this year had ill effects on his development or something. Almost like that… 😉

That was a quality team win. LTBU !

We are 1 of 4 teams with 2 players who have hit 25+ homeruns – Ward (27) and Adell (25).

Wish we clinched the series today. Gonna have to do it tomorrow instead.

speaking of the Tigers, a year ago today they were 55-63 and made the playoffs.

If Trout &! Rengifo contribute a bit more the rest of the way, our odds improve.
