Seattle Takes Game 3 Postgame

The Angels and Mariners entered the third game of this 4 game series knotted a 1 win apiece. Game 3 was close early on but Seattle rode a big 6th inning to a fairly comfortable win.

Taylor Ward opened the scoring by increasing his trade value.

That feat was matched by the red hot Julio Rodriguez, who mashed his 4th home run of the series to tie the game.

Seattle hit another solo home run in the top of the 4th and the Angels matched that run in the bottom of the 5th. It was a 2-2 tie after 5 innings.

Then the 6th inning happened.

Jose Fermin came in and promptly gave up his usual home run. He clearly didn’t have it today so Conor Brogdon was brought in to clean up his mess. He didn’t. Conor was put into a tight spot and cashed in some inherited runners, allowing Seattle to score 4 in the frame. A Luis Rengifo error allowed the final run to score, so it wasn’t all the bullpen’s fault.

From that point the game was decided. Carson Fulmer soaked up some innings and allowed Seattle to push their lead to 7-2 in the 8th inning. That ended up being the final score.

Nolan Schanuel had a 2 hit night for the Angels. So did Taylor Ward who lined a single in the 8th.

Simply put, he’s way better than the last 2 guys who worked after he left AND WITH A SMALLER OPERATING BUDGET NO LESS
Taylor Ward, Julio Rodriquez, Brian Woo, Logan Gilbert, Cal Raleigh….
BYE!!!

I was being completely serious – it’s been 10 years since he left the Angels. However you evaluate his success over that period, it’s not really relevant to the Angels today.

Why is Fermin still on this team? I can’t remember the last time I’ve seen such a bum player every single time they step on the mound.

I think I can answer that: Perry Minasian. He should be fired. He hasn’t been able to put a decent bullpen together in the total time he’s been GM. Next year… it’ll likely be exactly the same thing. At least they’ll have another first round pick to draft a pitcher who will spend his entire career in the bullpen, bringing that pitcher up in his first year as a pro to help ‘solidify the bullpen.’ Perry needs to go.

Agreed. Minasian hasn’t got a clue.

Jose Suarez era? That’s the last time I can think of.

Because he only makes $760k for one year

The results from the team over the past decade represent Arte’s definition of “competing”. Since Perry’s performance metric is to “compete” in 2026, he can’t rebuild. As such, my sense remains our crap is not going to motivate buyers to dig deep and trade their better prospects.

If you liked “Crapfest 2025”, you’ll adore “Crapfest 2026”.

Royals trading for Grichuk won’t help pull them back into contention, was rumored to have had interest in Ward. But not sure how motivated Perry is about moving Ward, likely the asking price will turn teams away. I think Perry needs to bang out a deal, keeping him is a mistake. Padres and Giants could use Ward, maybe the Mets and Dombrowski will get involved.

Anderson and Jansen will probably stick with the team until 7/31, when contenders react to other teams strong moves. Much better talent out there to be had than these two.

I thought Yankees were a dumping ground for Moncada and Heefo, but they pivoted to McMahon and Rosario who are marginally better but better.

It’s time for the Heefo era to end. Angels need to move on and find a cerebral utility guy. Not sure there will be takers with his horrid season.

Stuck with Soler. He’ll be owed $13M at age 34. Not a huge expense but sunk cost, just so one dimensional and with the Halos, he has not even displayed that one dimension.

Angels are the 4th worse team in errors and fielding percentage. Another reason to move Ward, Heefo, Moncada and Soler. Moving these guys will also clean up their poor base running.

For me, I’d keep Detmers and Adell, part of the shaky foundation but should entertain offers. For the Halos to solve the hole at 3rd, Detmers and Adell might have to be involved.

Soler and RenDone come off the books next year. Then we can turn our attention to Trout, the next sunk cost.

This game feels like the final clincher on the season. Playoff odds were already quite long, but you have to beat Seattle in a home series if they’re holding the WC slot at this point in the season.

Now Texas is also on a tear, and there’s just not an obvious path forward, esp as injuries are accumulating and Trout is K’ing at a 37% rate since the ASB.

I was there tonight. I realized why I hate/love watching this team. We had a chacne to win, then Fermin came in and stunk up the place. Why did we go away from Bachman so soon?

I wouldn’t put too much negative stock on Fermin because he’s a one and done guy.

Obviously, we’re going to sell.
Good news: no fracture for Moncada after the HBP. Hopefully, there’s a sucker GM out there willing to trade for him. This is peak value for Ward—please trade him. 🙏

The ACL Angels won their semifinal game and are heading to the championship series!

Trey Gregory-Alford was a dawg on the mound:

7 innings
1 ER
4 hits
0 walks
5 strikeouts

I hope you’re right. Unfortunately the success by the Trash Pandas in 2022 hasn’t translated beyond one AA season

Well, believe it or not, 17 members of that Panda class have touched the MLB at this point, so the talent was real.

That was the team that saw debuts from Neto, O’Hoppe, Bachman, Silseth, Joyce, Paris and others. Guys like Bush, Crow and Jackson who were traded for [not much].

I agree that the talent was real enough to get players assigned to the major league ballclub, however the talent was not real enough to win at the major league level.

Out of those 17 members, Neto is by far the most talented. O’Hoppe’s ceiling thus far appears to be that of an average MLB player. The rest aspire to be average.

I buried the links in the Game Thread. , but I went to Diablo to see the start of the game and got pictures of TGA and the all the ACL Angel starters. Here’s the lineup:

AlvarezCF
Marquez2B
AlfonsoSS
Duarte3B
RamirezRF
QuinteroC
Rivero1B
DishmeyLF
Rodriguez, LDH

Roldy Brito sounds and looks like Rockies Top guy, there are pics of him too.

Finals are best two of three starting tonight at Diablo against SF. SF had the best record and has a bunch of the top prospects in the league so hope to go up there again.

What’s better than seeing the ACL Angels in action? Seeing the 2025 Draft Class assembled together to watch the ACL Finalist. I said hello and wished them well.

Is there is a worse owner/GM combo in baseball than Arturo/Minasian. Maybe Colorado. Other than that, the answer is no, and it’s not even close.

Good thing they drafted position player bats during the draft …. Oh wait, never mind, they drafted a barge full of bullpen arms instead. Can’t wait to see which bullpen arm can be converted into a 3rd baseman.

The Athletic prospect guy just released his Top 60 prospect list after the draft where Minasian picked the pitcher from the small school with the sad story who is not on that list. About 8-10 guys in that draft were included, pitchers and hitters. Minasian literally can’t hit a fish in a barrel with the second pick.

Could you be right? Sure.

But you’re projecting your own feelings. Maybe let’s revisit the 2025 draft after the players … idk … actually play a professional game?

I don’t know, P12, Athletics Prospect Guy sounds like he may be the most authoritative baseball prospect analyst this sport has ever seen. Certainly this century. And Sacramento is the capital of California!

so I guess we all just ignore this class and should just focus on Draft 2026 at this point.
